So many people don't get this song! In Elle me dit, the kid (lets say Emily) is talking about how her mother gets on her nerves with all the complaining. In Emily, the mother is talking about her daughter (Emily) and how she's spoiled and immature. There are 2 points of view. The song was never meant to be a direct translation. Mika is too cool for that anyway.
I get it now because Elle me dit means she told me so in the song when it says "Emily dance" the mother is talking to her and in the other song "Elle me dit danse" it is saying she told me dance so it is her point of view.... ohhhhhhhh
I love the original song in French, but this one is simply hilarious! To those who complain, it's a lyrics video give the creator a break. It doesn't matter if it has mistakes, it's mostly right. Mika has to be the only artist that would take a song like Elle me dit and change it into something like this, I would burst out laughing if NRJ started playing this on the radio in Montréal suddenly. Best alarm clock song, ever.
We sang the original in my french class for mothers day. When i heard the english version though i cried and still do. It reminds me of my mother a lot. She has always been a very imperfect mother but i know she loves me.She has gotten better and we have gotten a bit closer and this song reminds me of our journey.
Hi so I am going to add my opinion on this song. A lot of people say that it is worse than the french version, saying it has less meaning. But if you look at the French to English translation, "Elle me dit" (or she tells me) seems to be written from the child or "Emily's" perspective. And comparing it to this song it seems as if this version is from the mother's perspective. It matches up and i find it cool. Okay that is my opinion enjoy the song everyone!
Callum Reed No, that's "Elle a dit" Regarding the song, it doesn't feel like it's from the POV of the mom (or not *just* the mom, could be from different perspectives), because it talks about "screaming at me in French", yet the only French lyrics in the song are "Pourquoi tu gâches ta vie?" (why are you ruining your life?), and it would make no sense for Emily to scream that to her mom!
emily's the song that'd totally slay as an edit/tribute song to any eccentric female characters. it is also simultaneously the song the editing community has been sleeping on for years
Since Mika said that "Elle me dit" is about what a mother can say to her son/daughter in order to get him out of the house, I think that Emily is one of these daughters and this is meant from Mika's perspective. For example in Elle me dit the lyrics are "are you stuck, are you gay, you will end up like your brother... it's you're life, one day you'll understnad, one day you'll regret it" so definitely disapproving while in Emily it's "are you stuck, are you gay, if you are, well, that's okay... it's your life, you're not gonna live it twice" no disapprovement or disappointment. I also think this, because this all is sung in a "to you" manner, and the sentence "one day I'll be dad, that's the only thing that made her smile" is 3rd person, this one isn't about Emily, but about the mother Elle me dit is about. He is singing this to Emily, telling her that he got through the same and that "it's her life" and not her mother's.
I love both the French and English versions so much; I thought this would be a bit meh since I blast the French one out constantly, but Mika did not disappoint!
I feel like rather than an "English version" or these are some "English Lyrics" to the song, I feel as though this is more of a "response" song to the Original French song.
@@boomboombam6 How long ago you posted the comment doesn't matter; this shouldn't be considered an English version. They're different songs despite the tune staying the same.
Narcissa Faith Also, I didn’t say it was a direct English version. It is clearly a reworked version in English which Mika has even said himself. The songs have a similar theme lyrically and the same music.
My name is Emily, I’ve been through a lot recently... one of my old classmates which I wasn’t so close to send this link to me and saying it reminds her of me... this song just helped figured out what should I do when I feel lost...
It's because everyone heard "emily" instead of elle me dit and some other words, so he basically did a parody of himself using the lyrics from what people heard wrong XD I love this man
I used to go out with an emily, probably the best relationship i ever had!! And this was the song that id fall asleep to and wake up smiling.. happiest i ever was, but as life goes by so does the happiness :( I can't even listen to this song without feeling heart broken anymore
This sounds sooo good! I can't tell whether I love this version, or the French version most, but for the first time listening to the English version.....THIS MADE ME LAUGH SO MUCH!!! This made my day :D
Tom Mumford Sure, if you’re using passé composé, you’d need the auxiliary (avoir in this case) and the participe passé (dit). What I’m saying is that he could also be using the passé simple form, which doesn’t use the auxiliary. For the verb « dire » the passé simple for third person singular is « dit ». Passé simple is more commonly used in literature, so it’s unlikely that Mika intended that tense. Regardless, it’s a possibility. You can look it up on WordReference or google « passé simple dire » if you want to learn more.
+P. Wolter people sometimes have nothing better to do then looking up theyre own names on google or even youtube ... surprising what you can find doing so :P
I like how the English version is actually the opposite of "Elle me dit", not only the language is different! :D I take this one to be the the boyfriend replying to the girlfriend's complaining from Elle me dit.
there's no boyfriend/girlfriend ; "Elle me dit" is about an almost-30-yo man who complains about his mother because she tells him he isn't masculine enough and he's wasting his life. "Emily" is about the mother of said Emily, who is quite like the mother of the first song. It can be understood as a dyptic : two points of view, the one of the children and the one of the parents. :)
. . . I have been considering dropping out of school because I'm too lazy to be bothered, and have been wondering about my sexuality and am feeling guilty because I haven't grown up yet when I need to be more mature and act like an adult instead of trying to be a teenager. Probably because I had a perfect, cushy life and never had to work hard, so I'm being a baby about it now. This song hit me so hard, Jesus Christ. Mika has spoken.
+Emily Anne (LostButHappy) If i could give you an advice, it would be to see someone that doesn't know you, someone neutral to your feelings who could listen to what you have on your mind without making any judgment, for example a therapist. As your name says, i am lost and happy, i focus on myself instead of school, because i don't want those problems to follow me for the rest of my life :D ( These might not be problems, maybe you don't want to become an adult, maybe you like women or men, you might have to stop thinking about what others think about you, it includes the opinion that your parents, family have on you, what they THINK you are ) I hope that it helped you, sorry if something is badly written or explained, i'm not english. I might have been a bit too far but nevermind, if it helped someone I hope that this person feels better!
Antoine Ardouin You're very sweet! Thank you, and I am sorry that you're having troubles! Your English is excellent. :) I agree, I think that the opinion of an outside mind is very valuable! I am fine and doing well, just indecisive.
My interpretation for Elle me dit and Emily is like: Elle me Dit is what Mika's mom said to Mika when he was a boy, and he didn't understand at the time, but now that he has a daughter of his own called Emily, he finds himself saying the same things to her....in the end, it's a parent-child thing.
I actually really like the English version even though I only knew the French one for the longest time. It’s creative how he changed the whole perspective of the song instead of making it a direct translation.

The amount of people pretending to be Emily in this comment section is too damn high
it's strange to listen this song after I heard Elle me dit so many times :)
its weird to listen this in english but they did a very good job with the rhymes XD and solved the chorus problema i like this versión, its very well made, but i like the french one more XD
AGHH I love this song!
My name is Emily and I'm 9 and i watch this since i was a baby
i nearly cried at hot hair....
oh
Oooh my Gosh :o I never heard this one in English before, and it's a quite fun version ^^ I always found that the lyrics of "Elle me dit" weren't really.. as amazing as the other Mika's songs, but "Emily" changed my mind :)
