Years ago got a guards van ride up the Spiral in the early morning. Always remember that trip, and have been up and down the spiral about a dozen times since.
I dont understand why y’all drive diesel when the track is electrified? Ive only watched 3 videos about NZ rail. Specifically this spiral & all run diesel. What am i missing?
Only Palmerston North to Hamilton is electrified (the Wellington line is also electrified but to a different standard lol). So if you’re transporting anything to or from Auckland or Tauranga (the two largest ports) you’d need to switch locomotives at Hamilton. (And if your transporting something from Wellington to Auckland/Tauranga you need to switch twice)
