This video was really helpful. I have been much too light on applications of the floating glazes and learned with test tiles. This video shows immediately that the application should be thick. I agree with the comment about seeing the tile in the light. I think that all she needed to do was tilt the tile to the left and the glare would not be on the right side of the tile.Other than that one small issue, I am impressed with the home studio level of presentation. The message is simple, but well explained.

Blue Rutile is one of my very favorite glazes. If you are using red clays with texture you can take advantage of how it breaks brown. With just 3 coats, the red clay shines through these spots and you get a gorgeous marbling effect.

Thanks for this video. Is there any chance to see a picture of the finished vase somewhere? Would like to see the effects on that washed technique.

It would have been helpful to see the finished/fired product. I'd like to see if your PC-20 ran a lot on the outside. I've had some challenges with Blue Rutile. When putting on multiple coats, it tends to run quite a bit, even runs over other glazes which then leaves the faint brown to blue/brown. (I'm using white salmon clay.) It is possible the kiln temps are not the same. I'll ask about that.

I find when Bue Rutile is used alone it doesn't run or moves very little at cone 5. Fired hotter it will run more. Check the firing. ~Cara

Do you not stir the glazes or shake them? I’m several videos I’ve noticed the glazes are very lumpy in the jar and you never stored them on camera.

i am a hobby potter and my blue rutile came out very green on a terra cotta clay. Someone else fires for me so I’m not sure if it was the clay body or the temperature. What would happen if I recoated and fired it again?

You would need to do a glaze test - get a couple of pieces of the same terracotta and do as in the video. 2 coats, 3 coats etc. Then I would suggest you know exactly what temp the kiln is fired at. Once you get your test pieces back you can see the colour appearance and then on one of them do a reglaze and fire again. (Potter of 17 years ☺️)

We would recommend everything that Melana said below. Also make sure that your terra cotta body is a cone 5/6 clay body as well. We fire a majority of our cone 5/6 pieces on a white clay body and fire them to cone 5 or cone 6 if they are featuring layered glazes.
Also make sure you are applying enough glaze. You never want to get the dry brush effect when you're glazing a pot.
      We hope this helps! :)

Have you tested blue futile on black clay, Eclipse mid fire.

I'm having issues with PC20, it's firing to cone 6 and turning out in shades of green to white. I watched your video and decided to run a test myself. I took a plate made of white clay and applied one to six coats of glaze. The one with just a single coat resembled blue the most, while the others turned out as a whitish green, similar to the combinations with PC20 that have been coming out with brown tones. I saw on Facebook in a group about glaze combinations that the formulation of PC20 has been changed. There is a noticeable difference in color in the jar, and the fired results are no longer blue. What should I do? I bought a gallon and the color doesn't turn out as it should.

I have had an issue with potter’s choice - in my first firing of PC I found the glaze had ‘spit’ all over my kiln shelves (leaving ghosting where the pots had stood) and more than half the pots came out with little ‘volcanoes’ all over them - bigger than pinholes - I fired to 1220 degrees centigrade on bisque fired to 1060 degrees C. No one can give me any idea why this is happening, can you help? Thank you 🙏🏻

Quite difficult to see variances on your demo tile in that lighting.

Hi there, we're sorry about the lighting issues. These videos are filmed in our content creators home studio so she doesn't have all of the studio filming lighting options that we have on site at the moment due to quarantine. The videos are then downloaded after their livestream so they tend to lose quality when we re-download them our facebook group. We are currently working on resolving the lighting and video issues.

@@AMACOBrent Understood, but if the tile can be held closer so that it fills the view as much as possible would help. ;O)

Should we assume that all potter’s choice float glazer’s behave the same way as blue rutile float?

    • @AMACOBrent
      @AMACOBrent  3 роки тому +1

Yes, the Amaco float glazes need 3 fluid coats to produce the results seen on the label.
