If anyone is trying to see what the new team looks like I run for Newbury Park and have been vlogging all our meets with weekly content documenting the new chapter of runners!
@@AsaFletcher Awesome. I think I'd like to check that out. I've been curious about what the team would or could become post-Young and Sahlman. How you guys would be on the state and national level, how you guys are viewed now just by having that name on your shirts. I've wondered if a national superstar (top 5-10) could possibly emerge within 2-3 years.
Very sorry for the limited use of footage due to Runnerspace's strict guidelines. Be sure to check out the other people I linked below though that still do a fantastic job at providing coverage of these meets!

As an Oregonian I was impressed to see OR popped up in the rankings that much. Maybe we can see some stuff out of them in the following years? As for the Newberry park squad, I think the underrated part of what made them so good is the set of siblings within them so they all get the same freak genetics and are all training similarly.

I don't get what you mean about the underrated part. I thought that part was THE part. The fact that the greats were two sets of brothers was more than well known.
Can’t comment on the final chapter without stating that the coaches left also. Talented runners with the right training, modivation, and belief made for a magical, fun to watch group of years.
Sean Bronsan, who deserves all the credit for turning the Newbury Park program, around left for UCLA in August 2022 and let his runner, assistant coach wife take over the program. She has since left Newbury Park and Sean's UCLA contract was not renewed. The before and after of that team, without stars, Sean's first year at NP was amazing. @My_Personal_UA-cam
I was very disappointed that the head coach Sean B. Left 1 year before this group graduated. Without him the group seemed more inconsistent and digressed in their rate of progression. They seem to have left a lot of big wins and records on the table
They left in a high to not see the lows and now the guy isn’t even at ucla and the wife left too.. nice couple of years but the main programs in southern cal remain consistently strong for at least a decade

Nice video but it’s not just chance that so much talent concentrated in one place..picking up the story only in the “final season” leaves that impression but their coach had a lot to do with it too.
@@arshanbhangooyes they were even their dad said and it was lex or leo but one of them was throwing up like crazy that’s why when they went to the podium for the team award they weren’t there since they weren’t feeling well
@lxvibes6869 If Leo Young won NXN, no matter how sick, Lex would have congratulated his brother at the finish. But Aaron Sahlman won and Leo disappeared.
The only bad part about the Newbury Park saga is that the best part happened first. That team with both sets of brothers might be the wildest hs cross country team every created.
Anyone who ran highschool knows how crazy it is to have a team like this. You're just a bunch of randoms that happen to live next to each other most of the time. So its either the training plan was perfect of everyone is doping lol
Even with maximal doping you’ll never see a high school team that good. It’s just a 1 in a trillion chance type genetics deal where you got 2 sets of genetic monster families on the same team
@@calvinonmc I absolutely do not think the Newbury guys were doping. But based on what you said I think you severely underestimate how much of a difference drugs can make. Highschoolers aren't tested in US xc and track. EPO, anabolics, or even SARMS could easily get a team of 4 ~15:30-16:00 high school guys to the Newbury Park level if they just went full YOLO mode and took super abusive doses.
@@FranklynAlvarez you don’t know what you’re talking about bro 😂. First of all SARMS and Anabolics do not improve running at all at a distance level. They actually hurt you as your aerobic system is heavily damaged by such substances. Look at all the bodybuilders dying from heart attacks as an example. EPO does provide a boost but mostly at the marathon level, it could take a 2:08 guy and turn them into a 2:02 guy, it’s less advantageous as you go down in distance tho. Oh, and abusive doses of EPO will hurt your performance by over thickening your blood and killing you. 5k guys only see a 10 second difference at most according to studies which is huge at the pro level but wouldn’t affect a high school team much. There will never ever be a possibility of another newbury park even with doping. There’s just not enough talent out there. And for the record, I think at least 10% of top ranked high schoolers cheat to some degree in track, especially in sprints.

I raced at ASICS yesterday and stuck around to see the championship races. The newbury park runners are still exceptionally fast, but they're not dominant in the way they were last year. Its nice that other teams get to have their chance in the spotlight and no longer get overshadowed by this absolutely insane team.
I am a coach un thé southern section D2 division and they are still a solid team only really behind Ventura which is led by a fast Anthony Fasthorse. Newbury definitely is still fast! But yeah won’t be anything like they used to be

I know that your probably understand the system and just got confused but in running scoring, less is more. That is why higher placing athletes only get like +1 or +4 points and athletes placing top 50 get around +40 smt points. Think of it like golf, you want less points to win for the team title, hence why they have like 80 points more than some teams having like 60 while other teams are in the hundreds. I feel like you know that but the way it is stated in the video is contrary to that so i just wanted to clarify incase anybody is confused when they see this or for you to look into it then you talk about scoring in future videos because hearing you say what you did at 7:37 sounds like you are basically calling him out for being slower than his teammates since he gave them more points, which once again i know wasn't your intention.
Oh, yeah, I was complimenting Cantu as fulfilling his role well as the 5th guy! (e.g. trying to beat as many people as possible). I do agree that my wording was *really* confusing though now that you mention it haha.
They have a long, long way to go to catch York (Elmhurst, IL) in terms of state championships. York has 28. I do agree thaat thtey had one of the bext teams ever. York 1999 and Carmel (with Rudy Chapa) are two other great ones. But hard to compare teams more than 20 years apart.

How does it work in California? You don’t have to run conference meets and don’t have to qualify for your state meet? In Michigan - and I imagine most states - you have to be top 3 at regionals to go to state. And I don’t imagine an athletic director allowing a team to skip a conference meet.
