2017 Ducati X Diavel - what you need to know before buying

  • I was invited onto a test ride with Riders of Bridgwater. I opted for a Ducati Diavel X and what a motorcycle it was! - If anything it's the engine that makes a great motorcycle and this motorcycle has a fantastic engine. There was no vibrations in the handlebars but the seat and tank did vibrate. Cornering was better then I ever expected with that massive 240 section rear tyre.
    Ducatis are expensive motorcycles. Although the metals and plastics weren't up to japanese standards, I think what I am trying to say is the motorcyle don't give me the impression of having a long life span visually. I was shocked to see corrosion on the chrome edges of the exhaust tips, some of the ergonomics are weird, like exhaust gasses hitting my jeans and a foot peg that dug into my leg, stuff you would never accept on a motorcycle.
    For all of the bad, the good outshines it, bucket loads of power, stability and handling prowess all backed up by superb brakes means this Ducati Diavel gives you a riding experience far in excess of anything else I have ridden in its class.
    In the future I wouldn't be afraid of owning one, I would only be afraid of the upkeep to ensure it looks cosmetically good.
    I liked this motorcycle even given the bad points, it like owning a rocket ship, you would never tire of riding it thanks to it's interesting styling and superb engine.
    Many thanks to Riders of Bridgewater for the experience.

    I rode one of these a few days ago and had pretty much the same reaction as you, it is an AWSOME bike. In fact this is the only bike for many years that's left me with a huge grin, the salesman was laughing when he saw my grin. It looks bloody gorgeous when you see it, like really striking. I HATE forward mounted pegs, that's why I don't have a Harley, but this bike's position is soooo comfortable that I think I might prefer it with forward controls. After my test ride I felt this might be the best, most enjoyable bike I've ever ridden. When you ride it, car drivers stare at the bike it's so handsome.

      I actually own an original Diavel (2013) and a 2012 Wide Glide Harley. Both have their purpose but I must admit every time I ride the Harley after spending most of my recent ride time on the Duc I think to myself "How the fuck do Harley get away with sellin' bikes that handle so attrociously bad in this day and age?" Seriously 2012 Harley suspension tech is on par with late 60's Honda, Yamaha et al...

    The metals used in the Ducati are on another level in comparison to any Japanese bike, the machined parts are showpieces, the bike is artwork worthy of display in any museum or public display, it's like saying a Ferrari's materials are inferior to Japanese econobox materials

      just spent over $8,000 + on my 15,000 mile Desmo service! I did the Desmo service which was about $2,200 before parts of about $600+, I added new tires , sprockets, chain and battery during the Desmo service, I was around $4,000 with the Desmo service and new parts mentioned but during the 15k mile Desmo servicing they discovered my wiring harness was broken around the steering head, it was routed so it kinked and after being kinked repeatedly the wires inside started breaking down / apart, they tried to patch it but the previous owner already had that done ant it did not really fix the cause, they said it needed a new harness and it was going to be $3,000 in addition to the $4,000 I owed, I have an extended warranty that paid for the harness and they also found the clutch slave cylinder and the neutral gear sensor was bad so it was going to be around $4,000 being paid by the warranty in addition to the $4,000 I paid!! PLUS they kept the bike for 4 months!
      I brought it in before Xmas, their Ducati expert was in Italy for 2 weeks as he did every year to update his skills and then Xmas hit then the harness issue and getting the work approved by the warranty company all took 4 months and all together $8,000+ with my $4,000 and the warranty company paying $4,000+, If I had not bought the warranty I would have had to pay over $8,000 to tune up my $10,000 Ducati !!! I bought it for $10,400 3 years ago, essentially if it fell over and was damaged that badly it would have been totaled, I was amazed the warranty company paid it all cause I am pretty sure the dealer damaged the gear position sensor doing the clutch slave cylinder job, they paid so all was good , I was freaking out at looking at $4,000 for my servicing until the rest came up , now I am glad it was only $4,000 not $8,000+ the total cost it ended up being!
      Now when I see all the great deals on low mileage Ducati's I think about the servicing bill being $4,000 to $8,000 and say new with warranty might be best today.

    • @MotoTingle
      @MotoTingle  7 років тому +1

      Hi Jay! - I enjoyed riding the Ducati, It had it's issues tho, as I found out before I ride it anywhere, Exhaust gasses blowing on my leg and the foot peg digging into me. Weird Ergonomic issues that just shouldn't be there. - Helmet laws over here are very strict and enforced with massive fines and bans on driving. One of the standards helmets must meet is British Standard BS 6658:1985 and carry the BSI Kitemark on them, it's a legal responsibility for sellers to ensure motorcycle helmets are UK certified. So let's say you went on eBay and bought a helmet from another country, you'd be breaking the law and the find for wearing it would be approx £2,000 plus if your insurance company was informed, they would cancel your policy. You'd have great difficulty obtaining insurance again. - Luckily Legal UK helmets can be purchased from £29.99

    Hey MT
    great review!
    I have a question. I noticed you are riding with you feet in a mid mount position on the bike but this particular bike comes standard with forward mount controls. Is this a new aftermarket mod or did this mod come standard from the dealership? This may explain the pegs digging into your leg. Can you shed some light on this?

    • @MotoTingle
      @MotoTingle  7 років тому +4

      Good question! - The mid mount controls were fitted by the dealer and came free with the Diavel if you bought it during the demo period. The pegs themselves looked like they came off of the Panigale. They were solid aluminium and they were fixed, so there was no spring action for them to flip backward if an obstruction was to hit them (hope I explained that okay). So if you put your legs down, maybe you roll the bike forward or backward slightly, the pegs dig into you legs. I have never had a motorcycle peg dig into my legs before, so I had to mention it in the video. Thanks for your comment!

    Hi,I've read some comms that the drive belt is a problem and is not cheap and u can change quite a few in a year.What u think?

    • @MotoTingle
      @MotoTingle  5 років тому

      At my local dealership, I was told the belts have a lifetime warranty. But the rollers do not. If the clear-coat on the rollers get scratched by stones running with the belt, you have to buy a new belt, you can not reuse the old 'lifetime warranty' belt. I have seen rips in the Diavel belts from stones/debris. Many belt driven motorcycle owners will experience similar over time, the Diavels are high performance, so don't potter around the streets, thus they pickup more debris. I think the biggest upset is the cost of replacement.

    Excellent review Alex. Ducati sounds great in the underpass. Didn't know it had blue dash that's cool 😎 heard instrumentation is useless in the sunlight great midrange and upper power handles great feels lighter than it is. More street cred over there than here. My feeling about this bike state side is it doesn't fit a particular riders niche so who do you ride with? Cruisers? Harley guys will shush you away. Sportbike riders? Maybe but probably a little too slow for the literbikes and big boys busa etc... but enjoyable on solo runs and people admire it as you pass by...sure. Is that enough for a long term relationship? For me you know the answer. I think a lot of Diavel owners over here get excited when they first purchase this bike but the newness wears off it collects dust then gets sold eventually for reasons I just mentioned. But it's different over there you ride your donkey with a ninja no problem no issues. Very cool!!!

    • @MotoTingle
      @MotoTingle  7 років тому

      It's a lone-wolf type of motorcycle. The Italians make some really good looking motorcycles. Italian motorcycles and cars are accepted over here and the owners rave about them. I enjoyed riding the Diavel but when I started to look into special tools to remove wheels, failed brake master cylinders, ECU's being swapped out under warranty, it freaked me out. I am not rich enough to buy a motorcycle brand new, so when I buy a second-user 'out of warranty' Ducati, will I have massive expenses? I watched UA-cam videos with people replacing rocker cover gaskets on 4 year old Ducati motorcycles, It worried me. - The rumor mill says Ducati have improved. I think I will wait 3-4 years and see...

    Must admit I had a lovely experience from Riders (bristol) leading up to the purchase of my first Ducati but thats where it ended (after the purchase). I bought it to ride ride it but after being promised the bike for 4 days later, 3 weeks on still no bike. Excuses varied from mechanics off sick hence unable do PDI (first week), red key missing (second week) having to send red key away for laser cutting (3rd week). What a total fail! Enough was enough and cancelled it. A week on bought one from Bridgewater and that was much more straight forward but Ill blame my bad experience on the initial naughty salesman and not the company. 5 years on and still chuffed with the bike though :-D

    i can't understand the big deal about ``exhaust gasses on your jeans'' while you're not riding and i don't get why you don't just fold up the passenger pegs if you don't like the touching your leg when you're not moving. those things are hardly a big deal, are they?

    • @MotoTingle
      @MotoTingle  6 років тому +2

      It was not the passenger pegs. It was the the riders pegs were fixed into position. It's my first ride of a Ducati and I have never met fixed pegs before. Why you would want a sharp pen to hit your legs while maneuvering the motorcycle I don't know. Exhaust gasses are up to the individual too, I just didn't expect hot exhaust gasses to be hitting my ankles, you might like it. were all different.

      It is a design flaw with the pegs. They were never intended to be there, as the originals were more forward. The dealer fitted these midmount pegs at a retail cost of £500 (at the time). Its a nice motorcycle but I opted for a Monster 1200 as it was proper capable of mis-bahaving.
