Absolutely spot on in your review of this team and the squad, Matt. We’re also soft centred in the back line too - even conceded two at Oxford as well as the others who’ve gone on to beat us and defending set pieces is a continuing problem. Sol Brynn has a technical issue in saving hard shots driven straight at him which have three times gone though him in the last couple of games - he’s trying to get down and block with his body/hands when he should be using his feet/legs - Dieng’s pretty good at that though he’s not without other issue himself. Should be improved by coaching but you’d think it’s late in Brynn’s career to be working on basics. I also had - for the first time - a niggling doubt last night about Conway’s attitude. Clearly, he knows as well as we do that he’s a 9 not a 10 and it’s him or Manu not both. Last night he looked to me as though he’d got the hump about being made to play ‘out of position’ and contributed nowt except a passable Eeyore impression. As you say, a reality check.
Completely agree, Matt. Hamilton is not a left winger and offers nothing at all in that position. Conway is not a number 10 and never will be, he just doesn't have the necessary creativity. But for me the biggest drop off is in midfield. When you have such a slow midfield it means they can't push forward for fear of leaving gaps that they simply are unable to recover due to the severe lack of pace in both howson and barlasser. Which means the opposition all know if the push onto them both they are safe in the knowledge that they don't possess the pace to break the lines, and means our midfield simply sits back right on top of our defence, and then you have a huge gap between them and the forwards, and it really showed last night how poor the midfield was. I would put Djickstel in the midfield paired with howson. At least then you have some legs in there and you can at least break through the midfield. Djikesteel I think would be a good temporary measure until either Morris or Hackney return. I would also swap Doak onto the left and bring Forss in on the right.
I said 0-0 draw but didn't count on a smash and grab offside but thats life. Think you're spot on with your assessment especially of Conway and Hamilton. Carrick should have gone for a 4-3-2/4-1-3-2 rather than a 4-2-3-1/4-4-1-1. Have Howson sit in and cover the middle on his own let barlasser feed doak and mcgree/hmilton and let conway and manu play off each other but then that doesn't fit our free roaming style. Formations are fluid anyway. They don't make up for a skill gap. As things are we stick to our guns and try and swap out like for like and as you say that really didn't suit Conway as he's a swap for LL. I commented about Hamilton on a boro breakdown vid a little while back. He was penned as a wunderkind when nobody had ever heard of him, I think he needs to go out on loan and we grab someone for that spot in January. Thats for his good and ours as right now, not being unknind, he's looking like a tryer who's outclassed. It'll do him the world of good to get 6 months in l1/l2 then see if he can step up. Lets hope that bug is gone sharpish or at least stop the lads ordering parmo from THAT place on linthorpe road the same night... UTB
Hamilton was bought to develop and it was said not to expect anything from him early on. He is young and will be very delicate confidence wise. If you are not relaxed you lose coordination.
I was inline with the player, and gobsmacked he gave it, shocking decision, and yes a draw would have been fair. But as a Rovers fan, Ill take it. So Glad VAR isnt in the championship.
Hi Matt nice video as always...Shame it's not under better circumstances lol....I said to my wife half hour before game started ...I've got a bad feeling about tonight...God I was right....we're missing a lot of important players and boy it showed..We never got going from the start and it was that Boring I was nodding off....Blackburn do what they always do to us even though the goal was a mile offside....I'll was hoping we'd sneak a 1 nil win and carry on into the weekend and do Hull ...we'd then look good with those two hard games coming up afterwards...We definitely need to beat Hull now nothing but a win will do..Just hope Hackney and Azaz play cos we missed those two big style ...UTB
The year we had the 3 points stolen and we had to play Blackburn again Hendry did the most blatant foul in the penalty area on Juninho and the ref ignored it when you have a bogey side.
Very unlucky Matt. That goal definitely should not have counted, miles offside! Officials are rubbish though. Its a shame because you were doing very well, it's like you hit a purple patch but then somethinng like this happens. I still think youll get playoffs though, you look like you have enough to get there but not enough consistency to be top 2
