This is so promising and hopeful, then you remember how it ended and it's instantly tragic. I never bought into US forces being able to pull off a hearts-and-minds, civil-development campaign. But, this doco made me hopeful that I might one day be proven wrong. Great work.
Classic counterinsurgency techniques were never going to work in Afghanistan for a variety of reasons. The smartest move was to have gotten Bin Laden at Tora Bora, then make a deal with all the interested parties, and get the hell out. But Franks blew that opportunity. So we stayed, not fully understanding the hot mess we were stepping into. And then all the predictable outcomes followed.
@@mikebockey4125 I have no blame for those that searched so long and so hard to find Bin Laden after December 2001. I blame General Franks and his higher chain of command for totally failing to get Bin Laden when they knew where he was in Tora Bora. Complete professional malpractice.
@@charlesmartin1121 i wasn’t saying that i blame anyone for not finding him. it certainly took long enough. i’m only saying that because it did take so long that we became invested in afghanistan’s welfare and we were never going to be able to make that “nation building effort” happen with a military operation. therefore, there was going to be a withdrawal. did franks play a part in that? of course. we’re just not set up for nation building. i feel the most bad for our soldiers and other personnel who were basically put in the position of being nation building contractors and afterwards have to deal with the fact that we were always going to leave and the job was not going to be done. that’s a heavy hand.
When Capt. Biggio said, "I want to come back here in 5 or 10 years and see this place" I thought; what a sorry turn of events he would return to. This is a really good insight into what was attempted to be done. It is too bad that our politicians ruined the inroads that were made and ultimately crushed them.
Afghan politicians were corrupt and unwilling to confront the enemy so the people chose the Taliban. Populace will choose stability over chaos every time.
Transforming Afghanistan into something remotely resembling a functional state was always going to be a nearly impossible mission. Demanding a commitment of time and resources we were never truly comfortable with providing. So we half-assed it, with the predictable tragic results.

This film is one that all Americans need to see. The net is so full of violent, destructive war front footage and I know that's part of it, but this is a much needed vantage point of the possible end result and more importantly the actual necessity of what the United States armed forces are for.... Freedom not only for our country, but all humanity. God bless the producers of this doc and God bless America.

Vietnam vet here. This documentary shows that NONE of the hard truths gained at such bloody cost in Vietnam have been learned by the U.S. or its troops. The Marine officer talking about "we came so that we can get that back" i.e. peaceful times, reflects a basic misunderstanding that the insurgency was fundamentally fueled by HIS PRESENCE (and the Russians before him - another lesson forgotten). This officer - and his troops - had no real connection with the Afghanis, their culture, hell they can't even speak their language. The ultimate irony is that the Taliban - formerly the Mujahadeen led by Osama Bin Laden - were funded and armed by the U.S. starting with President Carter in order to entrap the Russians into their own "Vietnam." And so a woefully under-equipped but fierce insurgency rooted in the population drove the most powerful military in the world out of their country. Much respect to them, and much sadness over the utter waste of ALL the lives lost in the process.
I know what you mean. I have seen this through vietnam and Afghanistan. They are very similar wars in tactics and not wanting america in country. However with Afghanistan, islam rules that land and much of the middle east and they don't like Jews and in turn they don't like america cause of that, as well as Christians. Islam wants to destroy all 3 and that is the root of it all. It's jihad to the islamics. Just do some research and see if you don't already know that.
@ChristSavesUs . Exactly the problem. There was never a chance they would ever accept the infidels in their country. Every single one of them were working with the taliban & if it wasn't the taliban running the show, it would be another fundamentalist group. They went in without a clear mission or exit plan. Bloody stupid politicians wasting the lives & money of the people. Troops from 🇨🇦🇬🇧🇺🇸🇦🇺🇳🇿🇨🇵🇩🇪🇸🇯🇩🇰 sacrificed so much & then were betrayed when they went home. Send the damned politicians to these places No weapons, no huge sums of money, the same pay as a private & the same medical services as the troops. Let them ass kiss their way to victory.
Commendable! This is the first documentary I have seen of Americans in Afghanistan that has given me good vibes. Great job by that group of marines to tackle the Taliban insurgency in the area with a humane touch. Bonding with the locals and winning their trust was the key factor, which was very skillfully handled by the platoon commander and his senior aids.
The American fighting man (and woman) is an extraordinary and flexible asset. It is a tragedy their skills and courage was wasted on a mission our nation never fully committed to succeeding at. Fully committing means above all never quitting before the task is finished. Our political leaders, and lets be honest the majority of the American people, quit this mission. The failure is more theirs than those who fought.
@@charlesmartin1121 It was mind boggling levels of hubris that put the Americans in Afghanistan in the first place. Hubris on the part of your politicians and military leaders.
@@Mike7O7O It was not hubris which led America to Afghanistan in the first place. It was an attack by a terrorist group, based in Afghanistan, which killed some 3,000 Americans. An attack on par with Pearl Harbor in 1941. Any President, Republican or Democrat, would have been impeached and removed from office had they failed to go there and punish those who had attacked us. Later it was more like wishful thinking (than hubris) that we could help such a deeply dysfunctional country make something of itself.

There are many who will say that the war was lost. I'm saying we may have lost the battle but it remains to be seen if somehow it is determined by some esoteric measurements that the war is lost. Respect to all the good peoples sacrifices and their "downrange" attitude in light of overwhelming circumstances. You've made a great difference and eventually that good will come to light.

The Welsh Guards I mentioned earlier, because of the crappy Labour Party government, seriously underfunded the British effort in Afghan, so what the USMC were doing with 700 troops..... the British were doing it with 40 troops..... that's it. Our government sends our troops to do tasks with absolutely zero resources and this is the totally unacceptable in my opinion.

Exemplary leadership by the Battalion Commander, and other officers. A classic counter insurgency operation. Hearts and Mind game. But in the end its the people who will decide what kind of country they want to live in.
I've just been able to watch this video today, cried for the entirety of the presentation. Having to "pen" this still in tears mindful of the great sacrifices of each and every one you. I've spent some time in this very location and can speak with some authority. I'm really sorry that we didn't turn the tide as soon as everyone would have liked. However, I as with many others believe that we have given the good people of Afghanistan enough breathing room to survive with some degree of hope. To those who say we lost the war I say we might have lost a battle but never did we lose the war. God is Great!
Nothing but respect to these Marines and all who served. In the end all of the efforts and sacrifices were abandoned by the politicians who sent them there. A lesson for those who would trust the people who send Americans to fight and die. When will we learn? Fight to win, destroy the enemy and the pull out. Nation building never works (especially in the Middle East) and usually props up corruption and incompetence.
I think I understand your sentiment. The thing is, there was never going to be a "victory", or "win" over the Taliban. No NATO country, especially the UK & US forces, had the political backing. Our politicians, of all parties, had no idea what the end game looked like. We didn't understand that the vast majority of the Afghan population, especially outside of Kabul, have any idea, what democracy means, or looks like. They certainly have no allegiance to the govt in Kabul. Mostly, they didn't even like the Taliban, they just didn't like us more! They didn't want, or understand what the West was bringing them. They never asked for it and didn't need it. Sadly that view is supported by history. You can go right back to Alexander the Great and the Afghan people, made up of hundreds of different tribes, clans and families, have ignored or fought invaders and each other with equal ferocity. Did our troop die in vain? I don't know. But I do know no politician had, or has the answer. There is a brilliant book by a British MP who walked across the country, just after 2001, mostly alone, following the route of Alexander the Great. He stayed with local people and local leaders, tribal elders, warlords and ordinary families. It gives a fascinating insight into what they NATO forces, and politicians faced. they should have read it!

Can't be more proud of what the USMC accomplishes in the worst of circumstances, the most impossible political climates and extremely deadly environments. Without the USMC, the US would be severely kneecapped when it comes to military effectiveness. Marines do the up close and personal tough work, where the rubber meets the road. I love and support all branches of our military but the USMC will always hold a special place in my heart. They don't question, they just define the mission and execute.

It may take a generation, but the seeds have been sown, an educated and healthy population was the worst fear of the taliban and they are still shirtless scared of their children being scholars. Thanks and extreme gratitude for the sacrifices service personnel from around the globe made for these extraordinary people!
How many of them got beheaded when they left. Deserted them and left you're military equipment behind for the Taliban. How many soldiers died for nothing?!!!!
Anyone who gave efforts to turn the tide on the Taliban is to be commended. It took the brits to begin the journey then the U.S. to clean house and build a new Afghanistan it just took serious commitment for things to change, a willingness to walk among these folks to teach them to secure their own future. . Praise God for theose who fought Brits/ Americans to change the minds of those who were praying for a better way of life.
Like the Army, the Marines didnt issue anyone a wife, and family. Being married, and having children doesnt make anyone a more special soldier. It makes their death no harder to take than any other death. The burden of family is their own affair...
Such a shame about the lack of education in this counrty, it desperately needs schools, and an infrastructure to enforce the law. Teachers not soldiers. Police not Taliban...
The hard part of this is seeing all the hard work 1/5 did in order to get that district in shape. Then in the end we got a CINC who decided to cut and run!

Such scenes of bloodshed may God grant we ne’er shall see again.
Our men fought well, let history tell, how our shot and shell did fly
And how the 59th stood firm, resolved to do or die.
Then praise be to those soldier lads whose hearts were firm as steel
When they fought for Queen and Country, on the plains of Ahmed Khel.

Have you ever deployed to Afghanistan???
@hikmatullahhussainee1615 was here with 1/3 who replaced 1/5 but decent attempt at trying to be cool could have been better though
@@charlesmartin1121, in not getting bin ladin for so long we were presented with what we have here and then by default an eventual ugly withdrawal
@@mikebockey4125 the real enemy was under your nose

The ultimate irony is that the Taliban - formerly the Mujahadeen led by Osama Bin Laden - were funded and armed by the U.S. starting with President Carter in order to entrap the Russians into their own "Vietnam."
And so a woefully under-equipped but fierce insurgency rooted in the population drove the most powerful military in the world out of their country.
Send the damned politicians to these places
No weapons, no huge sums of money, the same pay as a private & the same medical services as the troops.
I think you are right. Leaving it midway, and now it's back to square one.
Well done the Marines! Truly inspiring...from a British Veteran.

And yet the US still lost. you xan have all the funding you want

lost a high school friend there. the westboro baptists came to the highschool to hold up hatefull signs. at one of his memorial services. fellow citizens were crusing around with paintball guns while the cops mostly just stood between the radical folks and the crowd for memorial. they didnt do anything to us, the cops. they 'chased' one guy away. just lighted his car up and he sped off laughing cuz he nailed a few. with his paintball gun. my dad told me the entire church was a money scheme where they would hold up signs and say things that wouuld make you assault or batter them so they could sue you in civil court . as far as i know they came to the wrong town that day and didnt make any money off of it.
