I think when they say inspired by 90's cartoons, I don't think they are referring to Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain Planet or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles so much as they are referring to stuff like Ed, Edd n Eddy, Powerpuff Girls and Billy and Mandy's Grim Adventures
Either way, the animation style seems to be more in line with the late 2000s/early 2010s. And the fact that they're using cell phones says even more as much. I don't know why they're trying to market it as a "90s" cartoon theme, when it's blatantly not so.
@@SpinDlsc "What a Cartoon!", the style this RPG us heavily inspired by debuted in 1995 and ran till 1997 it was followed by "Cartoon Cartoons" and the individual shows PPG, Jonny Bravo, Dexter's Lab. Considering this artstyle was basically started in the 90s and all the other shows mentioned above were based on artstyles that started in the 80s of earlier, I would say, the description of the game is accurate.
@ServbotNumba40 The cartoon style #Blud was using was nothing like Johnny Bravo or Ed, Edd and Eddy, lol. It was more like The Amazing World Of Gumball and Adventure time. Absolutely nothing 90's about that game.
I think #BLUD is more late 90s early 00s cartoon inspired. I think we tend to include up to like '02 as part of the 90s, kinda like how some folks will consider part of the earliest 90s as the 80s. It's just how our nostalgia works, I think.
SMT V Vengeance is the only game that catches my eye… I _may_ go back to the Elden Ring DLC eventually, but I’m waiting to see how people like it. I’ll be delaying SMT for a bit, though, because I’m finally playing through the Sky trilogy for the first time, and I’m really tempted to NG+ Zero through Reverie before playing Daybreak - which there’s no way I’ll get done by July 5, but I love this series more than any other game I’ve played so I’ll be happy the whole time haha thanks for these videos David!
Regarding Kingdom Hearts on Steam, they're also going to be releasing an all in one collection that has all 3 games in it called Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece.
Back in the day, I absolutely loved Pirates of dark water and Spider-Man, so I could not agree more about the 90's cartoons topic =)) Maybe they meant 2000's? Like Foster's home for imaginary friends or Codename: KND?
ok to be fair, shadows of the erdtree is a bit more than just DLC, it is supposed to be as long as a full length game(google searches say around 30 hours, but I've seen as high as 70 hours) although I probably won't play it immediately I am not super eager to go back to the Elden Ring world myself, as much as I enjoyed the base game, I have just played one too many soulslike games in the past decade.
I am soooooo excited for “SMT V: Vengeance”! Atlus listened to us fans and is fixing the story issues the excellent vanilla release had! “#Blud” looks really interesting. (Looks more like early 2000’s Cartoon Network cartoons than 1990’s cartoons to me)
david - im looking for a sandbox jrpg - i want something that's close to a real ttrpg experience where i can interact with the stuff in the world like in baldur's gate 3, so that the gameworld feels real and alive. branching storypaths would be great too. can you recommend something? thx!
Everyone's already saying it, but yeah... that 90s cartoon inspired game is giving Cartoon network-era, not 90s saturday morning cartoons. I was born in the late 80s and remember both. I watched xmen, spider man, rockos modern life, rugrats, but also, Dexter's laboratory, cow and chicken, Powerpuff girls. I see it. But where I was 12/13 at the turn of the 90s to 2000s, you were already late teen and probably not actively watching those shows
With younger bros I saw a few of them, but as a non-American, we didn't get a lot of that weird dumb-ass aesthetic (bar Spongebob era), so even mid-to-late 90s was filled with stuff like Gargoyles, Biker Mice from Mars, TMNT etc. Different areas of the world got different cartoons, so that's also something to consider.
@7thlittleleopard7 I fully understand your point of view, but I was specifically addressing David's opinions during his video and I know he lives in the states.
OMG David you've made me so happy! all i'm picking up this month is the Monster Hunter Stories pack, so i can finally catch back up! thanks for the update my friend.
Heya David I love these round up vids, but can I make a cheeky request? Can you leave a banner with the games name, release date and platforms on screen for the duration of your summary? This is because I dont know if its worth paying attention to a game until after I've heard your opinion and seen some gameplay. At which point I have to scroll back to find the games name, and it would be nice to not have to do so.This is just a query/feedback not a complaint😂 looking forward to the next video.
Did you see the early access realease of a game called Quest Master? Its a 2d Zelda inspired game thats also a dungeon maker that you can share with others
Judging from this months list i'm honestly only looking forward to 2 of them this month. I know i'm looking forward to SMT 5 vengeance and it's alternate storyline but i'm also looking out for anime first person dungeon crawler, Hopefully it'll be in english upon release.
There have been a lot of interesting SRPGs releasing recently: Capes, Crown Wars: The Black Prince, Zoria: Age of Shattering, Our Adventure Guild... Mushoku Tensei was a major trendsetter for the Isekai scene, with it's themes of redemption and overcoming trauma, and a blend of adventurer and slice of life content. It's a book series made into manga and anime, and quite good if you can get over the protagonist starting from a very dark and low place.
Believe it or not, I'm most interested in Scars of Mars. It looks very reminiscent of Vasteel on the TurboGrafx-16 with more RPG elements. Looks to be a lot of rereleases and retreads of things I already own or thing that I just don't find interesting. Not that this is a bad thing; it gives me a breather so I can catch up on things I'm falling behind on.
That Legends of Dionysos game makes me think of late PS1 or very early PS2 budget title lol. I do get a smidgen of nostalgia looking at the graphics, but yeah, beyond that it doesn't look super great.
I’m reluctantly buying SMT V Vengeance. I wasn’t particularly all around happy with V but I’m still willing to give mainline Megaten a chance. I like the way FromSoft makes their DLCs. They feel like old school expansion packs that enrich the base game instead of those lame DLC episodes we see nowadays.
I definitely need to pick up Mushoku Tensei jobless reincarnation Quest of Memories, the dungeon crawling and graphics look amazing. It's an excellent anime too. Therefore Mushoku Tensei jobless reincarnation Quest of Memories is a must buy for me! Going to be so much fun to play Mushoku Tensei jobless reincarnation Quest of Memories!
Its no jrpg, but if you want something like the old western rpgs (think the later Ultima games) with some cosmic horror mixed in, Skald: Against the Black Priory came out the other day and it’s amazing. Just thirteen bucks, too.
I'm looking forwarded to the Monster Hunter Stories collection this month. Mostly for the fact that the first game is getting off of 3DS and onto a modern system. If you always wanted to jump into the Monster Hunter world but didn't like the action combat then Stories is accessible if you like turnbased. I feel like these games have been slept on because all monster collection games are viewed as "Pokémon knock offs" no matter what they innovated on or do differently. I find the combat in Monster Hunter stories really stands out and there's a lot of counterplay both for you and the monsters you fight that makes the combat engaging.
I already have the Kingdom Hearts games on my Steam wishlist (and I'm hoping they put up a bundle of all of them together, even if they count as 3 games in my library). None of the others in this list really interested me.
When you call yourself older than dirt….I must be the dirt next to you. Cmon man, give yourself a little credit. Meanwhile, I think June is going to be a good month to work the backlog.
The only one that has my attention is SMTV Vengeance. I enjoyed my time with the base game, though I've never beaten it, but then again, it's Shin Megami Tensei. Those games aren't known for holding your hand. They throw you into the lion's den, expecting you to figure things out on your own. I'm getting it for the Switch for consistency's sake. The original base game was a Switch exclusive, so it only makes sense to get the expanded version on the same system.
I’m getting behind. I’m still playing Hundred Heroes, 151 hours so far, 😆 After that I have Unicorn Overlord. I can’t wait to play it, I played through the demo, so I know it’s great. Next is Persona Tactics.
I'm getting just a bit of later-season Dexter's Lab or Johnny Bravo, and a very slight hint of Ren and Stimpy from #Blud. Definitely seems Craig McCracken/John K inspired, but leans a bit too much toward the 2010's "bean mouth" style of things like Steven Universe and Gumball for me to comfortably accept its 90's-ness
Wow as a massive fan of Mushoku Tensei / Jobless Reincarnation, I was not expecting this thumbnail that's for sure 😂 had no clue there was a game coming out haha. Great video as always! (and good choice of character for the thumbnail 👀)
I plan on getting Vengence in the future and I might get Monster Hunter Stories in the future too, no other JRPG catches my eye this month, I'm more focused on buying certain older PS4/Switch games before they stop making them, in favour of PS5/Switch 2.

I expect that the game of Mushoku Tensei gets foreign distribution Don't worry if you haven't heard about the anime/manga/light novel, Is an Isekai where a jobless guy reincarnates and decides to live his new life learning magic and meeting his future girls Many heard of it and they aren't fond of the elements, like the slavery or the protagonist being a pervert, those issues are nothing compared to what one finds in Berserk or Gantz

Hi David! Always excited to watch your RPG news. It may be wishful thinking, but I hope we get some new info about Decapolice soon. Also, are you familiar the new retro rpg SKALD? It definitely has an 80s PC rpg vibe. It may not be your cup of tea, but it's worth a look imo. Thanks again and have a blessed day!

It's mid 2000s, I'm 36
@@LordVex47 33 here. Take a look back at Craig McCracken's stuff and I think you'll see their inspiration for the 90s cartoons.
#Blud reminds me of the CN style of the mid-late 90s (Johnny Bravo, Powerpuff Girls, etc).
That "90's" art style seems more like early 2000's with the old cartoon network lineup. It wasn't that long ago I swear!
the hashtag blud looks a lot more like mid 2000s disney/cartoon network style cartoons

Thanks for Another great update! I just started replaying (after many years) Alundra 2 on my PSX. Great memories. My kids love it too!!!
like this format better :)
look forward for mushoku tensei rpg, glad its not a mobile game

me frantically googling what "integrum" means
@@TheWorstPartyMember It basically means "complete" which... remains untrue but we work with what we've got.

He pronounced mushoku tensei perfectly 😂😂😂😂
Do we know if all the extra demons in SMT Vengeance are going to be available on both paths, or just the new one?
Very excited for the Mushoku Tensei game!

The “90s” seems like a buzzword often thrown around. I think what they meant to say was probably that Cartoon Network early 2000s era.

#Blud was definitely inspired more by cartoons from the 2010's like "The Amazing World Of Gumball."
# might be "Sharp Blood" not "Pound Blood" or "Hash(tag) Blood"
Well, looks like I'll be saving my money in June. Time to dust off FF16 and play finally play Final Fantasy Mode.
They are the simpler cartoon network style shows though david, like dexters lab. And scrunched up and pointy.
They're confusing early and mid 2000s style animation with 90s for sure. I'm 36. A lot of that shift was due to lack of funding too
5:25 Blade Runner vibes
Almost everyone’s talking about that 90’s cartoon style thing but I’m left pondering how that very muscular woman on the thumbnail has that much mass on her breasts, not to mention they’re practically square shaped??
1) it's art,
2) a woman having pecs like that would alter the shape
3) irl breast augmentation is a thing
Aahhhh, what a fine Sunday morning! I've had my morning weekend beer, I'm eating a breakfast burrito, and I get to watch a video from David. What a blissful hour this is.
Also, I must say that I'm a bit sad that Legends of Dionysos isn't Greek-themed, considering Dionysus was a Greek god of wine, orchards and fruit. The game looks like it's just a money-grab or something, or maybe it's someone's attempt to showcase their game-dev skills. But judging by the title and the gameplay, they clearly aren't paying proper respect to the mythology.
I'm making my way through the Kingdom Hearts series and so far I've only beaten 1 and Chain of Memories, so anytime you cover the series I literally look away cuz I'm trying to play as blind as I can lol

Speaking of 90's cartoons I dang well hope you've seen X-Men 97 by now or soon at least 😉
Pretty keen for Monster Hunter Stories!
So everything aside of smt 5 is crap but that's fine because I'm hyped for smt5
That BLUD thing does gives the Pinky and the Brain, Powerpuff Girl, Dexter vibes...So it's more like the late 90s??
SO what you're saying is... we have a month to catch up on our backlog lol
I expect that the game of Mushoku Tensei gets foreign distribution
Don't worry if you haven't heard about the anime/manga/light novel, Is an Isekai where a jobless guy reincarnates and decides to live his new life learning magic and meeting his future girls
Many heard of it and they aren't fond of the elements, like the slavery or the protagonist being a pervert, those issues are nothing compared to what one finds in Berserk or Gantz
David for president! ^_^
Bro Jobless Reincarnation is lit. You not an anime guy?!?
Lmao calling it “pound sign” is definitely showing your age(I’m the same age as you). Elden ring dlc and the jobless reincarnate are the ones I’m looking forward to. I didn’t even know about my second pick so thanks for the info
5:12 😂
I'm more excited on the harvest moon and rune factory... I don't know why...
Those are incredible releases. I´m going te get me SMT V and Monsterhunter Storys and take two weeks off.
