Pristina is a wonderful city of culture, history and flair - sadly though I caught it on a rain soaked public holiday, not ideal vlogging conditions but I was determined to make the most of it. I started by preparing for the rain and offering up a quick tour of my hotel room at the Hotel Real close to the city centre.
I joined a free walking tour which started at the Theatre Building at 10am, on route I was surprised to see how many shops were closed and restaurants were vacant - it was like an abandoned city rather than the one full of energy I’d been hearing about. The tour guide soon explained that the closures were due to it being a public holiday for Eid al-Adha (Kurban Bayramı).
Our tour guide Erza told us a story about how she and her family left the city when the Kosovo War began in the late 1990’s. I found it so fascinating I asked her to repeat it on camera after the tour - something which she was kind enough to do.
When the official walking tour ended my own self-guided walking tour began and headed down to see the Bill Clinton statue and learn about the NATO intervention in the war. After warding off a couple of stray dogs I took a look around the Mother Teresa Cathedral, examined the buildings around Skanderbeg Square and made it to the Ethnographic Museum close to the Xhamia e Madhe Mosque.
Both the Old Clock Tower and Përmendorja Monument were clad in scaffolding so I didn’t see much of them but I did enjoy looking around the University Campus where I found a half built Christ the Saviour Orthodox Cathedral and the world’s ugliest building The National University Library of Kosovo. There’s plenty to tell you about both so I go into detail during the video.
I ended up at a closed down market which was as authentic as authentic could be, the Yugoslav built Youth and Sports Center and the famous NEWBORN sign not too far from my hotel. A thoroughly enjoyable day in Kosovo’s capital Pristina and a great way to end my incredible trip to the country.

I've been through Kosovo 🇽🇰, I remember the American School of Kosovo, but not spent time there. My Mrs has a place in Southern Serbia, not far from border, 30 min from Raska.

Erza's story was so heart breaking, especially what her grandparents went through! One of the things we quickly picked up on when travelling in the Balkans was that a lot of the guides were able to tell us the history through their own personal stories which is amazing how sharing they were with the information. A shame about not being able to go up the bell tower. I wasn't able to go up the Sagrada Familia due to the rain - and I've since heard it's not as impressive in comparison to when the sun shines! I wouldn't have said the National Library was the worlds ugliest, I've seen many buildings that are far worse, but it's also not amazing either! I agree that the campus park is a really interesting part of the city! The lunch price was insane!! I always say with cities you can find cheap eats, but never would have assumed a café with tables on the street light that would have been that price! The house being dismantled brick by brick and reassembled at the museum is just like the terrace houses in the outdoor museum called Beamish up where I grew up (not sure if you've heard of it before). My mum knew the people who owned one of the houses before they agreed to sell it to Beamish!

Yes she told the story on the tour and I found it fascinating, always good to hear from the people who were actually affected by the war. Very kind of here to tell it to me again after the tour too. It's amazing just how recent it all is! I kinda like brutalist architecture so I find those type of places so interesting, I would have loved to go inside but due to the public holiday everywhere was closed. It rained most of the day so I was unable to fly the drone, otherwise I think I would have got some decent aerial footage of that building.

Kosovo is definitely very interesting. It has such a rich mixture of European and Asian culture, mixture of culture and trauma of the bygone wars, combination of the urban and the nature landscapes. Prices still seem reasonable compared to other European countries and the tourist business not to develop which is a sort of a plus because it means it's not flooded with tourists. But yet they have good enough conditions to stay there as a tourist. I love it when you spoke to the people in your videos. Thank you for introducing me to Kosovo in so many interesting videos, Matt.

Brilliant quote at the beginning. With how much you know about the world, we thought you would be leading the tour. Very emotional testimony from her childhood. Nice tribute to Slick Willy Clinton. Fascinating status for that church. How did we know you would order a Fanta with your burger?? Lol. We realize after watching your series that we really missed out not making it to Kosovo. Banger of a video Matt!

As much as I love drinking Fantas (and I really do!) I will have to find something else to drink when I go back - they cost as much as the burger! I'd definitely recommend putting Kosovo on your list - it's amazing!

The Cathedral of Saint Mother Teresa in Pristina is a Roman Catholic cathedral being constructed in Pristina, Kosovo. In 2007, the Government of Kosovo approved plans for the building. The cathedral is dedicated to the Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary, Saint Teresa of Calcutta.
In 2005, the foundation stone was ceremonially laid by former President of Kosovo, Ibrahim Rugova, himself a Muslim. Construction began in 2007. The unfinished cathedral was inaugurated on 5 September 2010, lol that bulding was school in Serbian time

Thanks Dizzy, glad you're enjoying the videos! Most literature here in the UK spells it with the 'st' and that's what my airline ticket said so that's what I used - apologies if that's wrong. Am I right in thinking one is a Serbian spelling and the other Albanian? Thanks for watching, I'm always keen to learn more!

Loved this video and we have actually booked , we fly out of Luton with Wizz air 23rd March and return 27th , 4 nights in pristina and your videos really helped . I followed the history and remember the terrible times and it’s always fascinated me . I don’t suppose you remember the name of the hire car company you used ? Thankyou

There are different car rentals at the airport.

Thanks for watching the videos, I'm glad you've found then enjoyable and helpful. Thrilled to hear you've booked a flight, good on you! I'm sure you won't be disappointed - looking forward to hearing about your travels in March, please make sure you report back!! In terms of car rental, I nearly always use www.rentalcars.com - they've proven reliable, offer good support and good prices. With this particular rental I used Rent-a-Car MARA based at Pristina Airport (through the Rental Cars website), this company was half the price of all the others and popped on the listings about a month before my trip. I'd recommend booking early with a free cancellation deal, that way if prices get better nearer the time you can cancel and rebook. If prices go up then you've already got a good deal. The car I got through MARA however was a bit of a wreck. Brocken wing mirror, broken air conditioning, engine management light constantly on and some very concerning noises coming from under the bonnet. In hindsight I should have refused the car and contacted Rental Cars on their app as I think they would have helped me to get an upgrade as the car they gave me wasn't fit for purpose. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions!
