May was very hot 25-27, June was cool and wet, July who knows! August is usually the best summer month. Winter starts in November when daytime temperatures go below 0. It’s cold and dark. Not my favourite.

The "consultation fee" applies to citizens also. You pay it once per year, when you go in (you don't have to pay it then, they send you a bill with two weeks to pay it). So if you go in again, you don't pay again, until next january. Not sure if you, Matt, would need to pay it again. Probably their system (which is all connected, and that's why there's no form-filling) will have your payment logged, and then if you need the cut taken a look at, they won't take another 40€ off you. Hope so.
Last time I had to go in the "stand by" department, which is a kind of low-stakes ER, where people go when they've broken an arm, or hurt their head (I guess you were at that department of Savonlinna system). I had to go to that in a country town, because I'd developed a severe eye infection, and then I go in there, talk to the receptionist, then wait until the two people before me were checked (which took about half an hour), then doctor looks at my eye for about twenty seconds, then walks away saying I can go straight to the pharmacy, he'll immediately send the digital prescription for aseptic eye-drops. Very fast and smooth. Just a few years ago, a much less practical system was in use.

Nice that you did visit my hometown..even it was not so succee due what happened in the castle :( . You started this video from a very same place in Savonlinnan Opisto and the same building where I studied as during my youngster years at the beginning of 1970s but only for a short time. Now as a senior citizen about half a kilometer from this St. Olafs Castle along the mainroad Olavinkatu. By the way this castle was not build in a easter board of SWEDEN, but the kingdom of Sweden-Finland. Something like a Great Britain which has there in these island England, Wales, Scotland,Northern Ireland together...Erik Akselinpoika Tott was the person who did started to build this castle as giving the order in year 1475. When you're in those old castles and other structures doing the more adventurous explorings as I've seen you do in several places👍 you'll need to adopt a posture, early, for certain openings that mimics "Igor" (Marty Feldman) in the film "Young Frankenstein" (1974)🙂

Hi Matt. I am first going to watch this to the end……and here comes the crunch moment from your hotel room….ouch ouch ouch….thank goodness for kind people helping you. (I never told you previously that I am a medical doctor AND a psychiatrist)….The scalp bleeds profusely. That superglue works well to close scalp lacerations…I dare suggest that Finland’s healthcare system would rate highly for efficiency. Were you still an EU citizen, you would not have paid a cent because for all emergency cases, there is an agreement between the 27 EU countries to cover emergency hospital expenses…What ultimately matters most is that you hopefully didn’t experience any long term effects like concussion….Here’s a crazy thought…or is it…sometimes having a traveling companion…not sure what distances you drove per day but perhaps you were a bit fatigued…
There ends my long missive. Best wishes, until next time. Zoltán

    • @MattWhitingsEurope
      @MattWhitingsEurope  3 місяці тому +1

Hello Zoltán , thanks for the information, as a doctor I could have done with you there at the time! 😆 Yes I was thankful to the lady for helping me but when I look back at the incident I'm quite surprised the castle didn't have any first aiders or even a proper first aid kit. They had to look in 2-3 locations to find a plaster. I actually do carry plasters myself but they weren't quite big enough for the cut - and also I couldn't see what I was doing. The lady that helped made the best of a difficult situation and was nice enough to call the hospital to see what they recommended. As far as healthcare, I actually do still get the same healthcare treatment as a local because the UK and Finland have a reciprocal deal so Finns in the UK can use our NHS and Brits in Finland can use your healthcare service. It actually sums up Brexit quite well - when we were in the EU I was able to use the healthcare facilities in any other member state. When we left the EU Boris Johnson decided to launch a Global Health Card system, however the global card works in less countries than the EU one. Go figure! Thanks again for your insight.

No doubt next week you’ll upload another fascinating segment.

      Cheers
      Zoltán
The following might be helpful to any of your readers…especially useful if you’re on your own and nobody close by to assist.
When it comes to basic first aid use acronym “RICE”. The idea is to help reduce the bleeding/swelling as much as possible.
      R- rest (stop moving)
I - apply ice to affected area (a cold pack in other words)
C- compression/ apply pressure to affected area - stems bleeding eventually allowing formation of a clot
E - elevation (if applicable) of affected area to reduce amount of blood flow

Sweden built this country, before they came here, there was only small villages in the forests.
The swedes built all the big cities and castles and churches, but in Finnish schools it's not taught.
Finnish schools have Pakko Ruotsi where they try and teach the Finns Swedish, instead of that, they should teach the Finns the REAL history of Finland and Sweden.
They really do the Finns a huge disservice by not teaching them the true history of Finland.
With pakko Ruotsi they make the Finns hate the Swedish speaking population in Finland.
Like it's our fault they have to learn Swedish.
It would be better if they taught them what Sweden did to Finland and how they built Finland up and developed it into what it is today.
Plus what Sweden did during the Civil war and Winter war.
Without Sweden, the Reds would have won the Civil war and Finland would be part of RUSSIA today.

The fee is really more for trying to dissuade people from going there unnecessarily than it is about covering the real costs. If you really can't afford it, you can get an exemption on the fees. Staying overnight isn't that expensive either, in fact it's probably less than a tourist would pay for their accommodation.

I did wonder if that was the case. Sounds sensible. I know in the UK we have a big problem with people making appointments and then not turning up - I should imagine the fee encourages people to cancel it properly if they can’t make the appointment meaning someone else can have the appointment.

I'm extremely glad it wasn't more serious. Do you now have a permanent scar to remind you of the debacle?

I think there is a slight mark but it’s above the hairline so thankfully not noticeable. Lucky I was wearing a cap otherwise it would have been even worse.

Hitting your head seriously and getting it quickly fixed and jumping to have a car trip might not be what the doctor would have suggested..? :/
You might have had a concussion that would have still start to act up while you were driving (being danger to you and the others on the road) and (alone) be farther from the hospital. And you certainly should not have been alone next night without anyone check on you regularily. :/

I guess that's one of the downsides of travelling solo. The doctor said he didn't see any signs of concussion at the hospital and told me to keep an eye on it for a few days. I had information on what signs to look out for but thankfully never experienced any of them. Had I of felt unwell of shown signs of concussion I wouldn't have driven on because the last thing I would want to do is put myself or anyone else in danger. I live to tell another tale!

I recommend going Olavinlinna castle for the concerts. There are a lot of concerts during summer. The experience is amazing. Otherwise it is quite ugly place with old rocks.

I quite enjoyed my visit until I headbutted a wall and ended up in the hospital. I bet the concerts are a magical experience.

He is not a finnish citizen so he has to pay it himself. Still 40€ for the whole thing is nothing in some other country that would have cost several hundreds just because the doctor time.
