Lawrence George Durrell was an expatriate British novelist, poet, dramatist, and travel writer, a bestselling author and one of the most celebrated writers in England.
Born in India to British colonial parents, he attended the Jesuit College at Darjeeling and was sent to England at the age of eleven for his education at St Edmund's School, Canterbury.
He spent from 1935 to 1939 on Corfu. His book 'Prospero's Cell' was his love letter to the Island.
His younger brother Gerald wrote a semi-fictional trilogy The Corfu Memoirs incorporating 'My Family and Other Animals' on which the popular TV series, 'The Durrells in Corfu' is mostly based.
Part Two looks back on Durrell's Greek journeys into the Aegean Islands some years later. A more intimate portrait of Durrell emergences in this episode.
This 1975 16mm film print was in near new shape, still unopened in a shipping can from the lab, physically un-run, but exhibited severe negative scratching, high grain, and colour had turned red.
It was discovered in a shed amidst an abandoned consignment of dried dates from Alexandria.
After sitting in its container for nearly 50 years, the restoration was done in 2022.

Excellent document. Thank you for sharing!
This is, undoubtedly, the best documentary ever made on a writer and a landscape. It's full of poetry, history and dreams. Iti is all life and literature: the rhythme, the words, the scenario and even the colour of the seventies BBC images. Absolutly fantastic!
How many places have changed now but Greece is still a lovely place to visit.
Especially the more off the tourist track places.
What a wonderful find. Durrell is always such a spell binding narrator with an irreverent wit interspersing his more poetic moments.
Thank you for the comment Robert.
A precious jewell.
Thank you Ivan. You might want to watch the 'Durrell's Corfu' installment - equally excellent.
@@rainscratch I did and adored every bit of it. Your feed is one of the glories of this platform and the internet in general. Cannot be more admirative and grateful.
@@itopus1 Your kind words are much appreciated. It is a hobby of mine to find, restore and post these historically important films, otherwise most likely, they would have never been seen again. There are also many films that I filmed and/or edited on Greece and other destinations I've visited. George
@@rainscratch immensely appreciated. I will watch them all.
Very good documentary and interesting story , thanks very much George
Thanks Nick. The two part documentary is excellent and good to see parts of Greece of that era. You can still find that life style today in Greece, but less common.
😿my iphone hine set maximum volume yet can hardly hear audio 💔has YT changed sound algorithms?
Haunting piece of music at 19:27. Can anyone identify it?
It is by a famous Greek composer - could be Mikis Theodorakis or Manos Hadjidakis? If you have Shazam app it will identify it (like magic)
@@rainscratch sadly no joy with Shazam.
@@lomion79 Usually that works. I know the music - just have to try and remember the details!
I hope you manage to. It's beautiful.
and it is made by a french movie director Jacques Boumendil !
It was a co-production across I think 3 countries, UK, France and Greece. I was in contact with the assistant editor a year or so ago.
It seems Jacques was the Cinematographer.
thank you! I think after all this I'll read Lawrence Durell ( at least one book ) and Gerald Durell who write the novel "my family and other animals" : I just discover the bbc drama on Arte French tv ( replay ) in vo and it was so fantastic moment the story, the cast, the humor. Now, the books 😀👏
ionian islands...
Thank you for watching Dimitri. This episode is filmed on the Aegean Islands - Durrell says this at 1:32. Part One is filmed on Corfu where he and his family spent several years when young.
You can tell the difference between the Aegean Islands (barren rock) and Ionian Islands (lush Greenery)
😄
