I am a Rochestarian, if you are reading this, and never heard of Sibley dept store or saw their windows at Christmas time. If you dont remember Midtown Plaza , you never knew Rochester in the golden years. Like all rust belt cities Rochester will never comeback to the old days, it is over people. Low pay, no future jobs lead to high crime.

It's vague because I'm only 45 but I remember huge Christmas trees, opulence, it reeked of class. It was like going to the high end parts of NYC. I remember a rotary phone store that had every phone imaginable. It was an attraction. Times have changed.

I’ve grown up here and don’t think this is exactly true. Sure, the mall downtown closed down, but we still have businesses in the Sibley building, now called Mercantile. It’s rough, but we are extremely diverse and excepting. Have some of the best technology and medical schools in the nation. It’s also a destination for start up businesses. And we have avoided a lot of the problems of major cities while still offering all of the attractions of a massive city and a very small fraction of the population.

What to say here...? I was born in Rochester in the late 60's and Rochester is, has been, and always will be my favorite city. Rochester is deep in culture and history, many don't know or haven't researched the city's beginning, especially the 2nd great awakening in the early 1800's, Rochester used to be a religious city, crime was low, many just don't know the prominent early people of the city or it's wonderful beginning. Sadly in the early 80's, 1980, my family moved from Rochester to a little village to the southwest of the city. My father did not want my sister going to John Marshall High and I'm sure my brothers or I also. It seems as about then that people were moving out, looking for better lives, homes, and neighborhoods, that the city started to go down hill and has ever since. I think one of Rochester's biggest downfalls is the lack of work as businesses moved to the suburbs and people going with them, it left Rochester with a people with no sense or purpose. I think one of the biggest fixes for Rochester is to tear down some of the really old, non-historic, buildings and get companies back in with jobs to give people a sense and a purpose, that with returning to the early 1,800 roots and God would certainly about fix most of the cities problems. I'm sure the that the Rochester now is not the Rochester Samuel Rochester envisioned when it was first a village. To me government doesn't do enough but line their pockets and do as they would rather than really care about a people or a place. Rochester became the flower city after it was the flour city and was a beautiful city at one time, gardens such as Maplewood and such were kept to keep the city beautiful and draw interest, if only the money was used in the right places Rochester can be grown again, it just takes someone with good vision and a good head on their shoulders. My prayer is God will be once again invited into the city and all the world can see what can be done through Him.

I lived here my whole life, and I’m well traveled. I’ve never seen a city with more greenery hands down. Saying it used to have gardens is total bs. Did you forget about the lilac festival??! Or the fact there’s a park every two miles that like 25 acres?! And a huge beach that’s basically the entire north shore of the city?! And a waterfall in the center of the city?!
And the city has taken some steps forward since ousting Lovely. Sure it can be rough, but we are a major city with less than a quarter of a million pop. Some of the best colleges in America, a food culture that’s around 10 years ahead , some of the best festival and entertainment the nation has to offer. And there’s still a church every mile. So I don’t even know what you’re on. Take a walk around and enjoy where you live and celebrate what is good instead of hiding inside because you want to think it’s bad. Your poor attitude is what is making the community worse.

Things are going back to how they were in the 1990's before Mayor Johnson. He lowered the crime. Johnson began forming community with Empowerment Teams and Community Oriented Policing. He got people working with Rochester Works jobs program, as the criminals were illiterate and couldn't get jobs, but the core issue of the city school district wasn't fixed. The district ranks last among the state's five largest school districts with English proficiency of 11.4 percent, and 10.7 percent proficiency in math.
Robert Duffy undid many of the changes he had introduced, doing his best to stamp out community, so it was only a matter of time before the crime rate shot up. Robert Duffy favorite bar was shot up and closed. But the shooters were donors to the republican party so the murder scene was cleaned of witnesses.

This video is wack. You chose some google street view of a beat up area. I live here and have been really well traveled across America. We have huge lush parks of open grasslands and trees every couple of miles. Large areas of nightlife, some of the best colleges in America. This has led to a diversity that you couldn’t even imagine. We have a food culture here that covers every country casually in every neighborhood. Nobody really cares who or what you are as long as you are respectful. Of course we have a few no go zones, and the nightlife areas can get wild, but it’s not like most places these days. Sure it’s hood, but this is just pointing out the bad parts.
