To expand on the science of Naomi's jump That Ty brought up: If you fully exhale, it minimizes the lung damage (but there still will be some). All moisture on your skin and eyes boils off from lack of pressure, cooling you. The sun's radiation can give you really bad sunburn very quickly. Most or all capillaries at the surface of your skin and eyes could burst, but not hard enough to break the skin, it would be like having a hickey all over your body. Maybe your eardrums would rupture if you aren't able to equalize the pressure fast enough. Within 15 seconds you black out. Luckily Naomi had a vial of hyperoxygenated blood to keep her conscious (they set that up earlier in the season when Holden gave it to Monica). But even so, after 30 seconds you start getting permanent damage. After 90 seconds you are dead Here's the story of someone who was accidentally exposed to total vacuum as part of a NASA test: www.popularmechanics.com/space/a24127/nasa-vacuum-exposure/ Other people have counted how long the scene took and it was a little over a minute, so it's possible that it was either in slow motion, or that they fudged the amount of time it took because it would be disappointing to viewers if it literally only took 15 to 30 seconds
If you noticed, Ty said that you can survive 15 sec ~ 30 sec without air due to the air in your blood and then you pass out and couple of minutes later and then die, so you have to calculate, from the moment she jumped to the moment she took the hyperated oxygen shot, then assuming that would give her extra 15 sec ~ 30 sec. The scene was exactly 1 min long and of course they have to make it in slow motion otherwise it will be so fast and be a bad experience instead.
@Zwenk Wiel when you dive, even if you exhale, there is still air in your lungs, and the limit of how long you can hold your breath is when there is too much CO2 built up for you to hold your breath anymore, or when that air left in your lungs is fully used up, whichever comes first (usually the CO2). There's also the mammalian dive reflex, which slows down your oxygen use when immersed in water, and this can be purposely honed further until you can get more and more out of each lungful. When exposed to vacuum, ALL of the oxygen in your lungs is gone instantly, and you're only left with the oxygen already in your bloodstream. That blood only gives you 15 seconds. I'm both cases, you want to hyperventilate beforehand, to get as much oxygen into your blood, and as little CO2, as possible. However, this is dangerous to do when diving, because it can give you a false sense of how long you can hold your breath, and you might run out of leftover air before the CO2 buildup tells you to surface. Naomi past has always been a bit vague and the reason why she tries to be so steadfast in her morals and why she tries to hold Holden accountable makes so much sense now.
My wife isn’t into SciFi at all, so I discovered The Expanse one night, when she was at work... and I never looked back. Binge city! Thank you all for creating a world so immersive, so engaging, that I am actually dreaming of the characters and environments. Incredible work, everyone needs to know about this amazing show!
I really liked the way Keon and Dom played that scene in the cell. It was like magnets opposing each other and simultaneously two people driving their knives deeper into one another. Just brilliant. It felt like two people were discussing different films. Naomi was describing a horror while Marco was describing a gothic romance. The genuine disconnect was electric and powerful.

@@tudoru6551 that's not what hard sci-fi is. That is action. What makes The Expanse great and unique is not making a cheap drama out of a dysfunctional family in space. We get it, they have issues. Now let's go back to the details within the complex scientific, anthropologic and inter governmental context.
Dominique Tipper has always been great on this show, but last night, she was INCREDIBLE. There was no Amos, no Chrisjen, no Drummer, but it was still the best episode of the season.
I must say i was also thinking Naomi is ending it (like all other characters present in the scene) and after i realised that she is actually trying to get to another ship i was double shocked, amazing scene.
same! all i could think No Naomi, you're the one who always finds a way to survive. Holden is the suicidal numbskull. not you baby!...then, she blows my mind again
Me too. I actually read some vague spoilers about someone doing a suitless space walk soon, but I assumed that meant someone important was getting spaced. And when Holden brought up Naomi's unread message I thought it was foreshadowing that she was going to die. When I realized what was actually happening at the end my jaw practically hit the floor. Only someone with nothing to lose and unmatched courage could even come up with such a crazy plan.
Wonderful episode. So emotional. I guess I missed a lot of the details of Naomi's escape in the book, so the show's take took me completely off guard. Dominique was great.
Loving hearing the actors / writers insights on this amazing show. Thanks to Ty & That Guy for bringing us these glimpses into another side of this universe. Wish they were twice as long!!

Thank you Miss Tipper !!!
Reading the books where Naomi just made the impossible was sooo amazing and also breathtaking, but now watching it with my eyes was bruuutal. This part remembers me a specific Stargate episode where Teal'c and O'Neill had the do the same thing. You, guys are amazing!
I'm glad they cleared up the space jump, I feel there will be lots of people thinking to previous movies where people die as soon they get into the vacuum of space.
@@Steve_McMillen That did seem a bit off. But over weight out of shape belter. Naomi had trained for gravity. Maybe he just gave up. It did seem off. Would be better if he pulled his arm in and the kid cycled the air lock.

Such an incredible episode! One of the best moments in Sci Fi history. I watched the episode 5 times already. Kudos to all of the actors who really delivered so many moments in one episode. WOW
Though I am a man, I don't think it's reductive at all to think a woman may have the tools both naturally and from potential experience, to better empathise with the maternal hell ride that Dom had to portray as Naomi. The scene with Cyn hit me like a brick wall. I think it's exciting and enjoyable to talk about how our differences in gender, impact the stories we tell and how we share them. Every story has multiple perspectives. Marco likely felt justified in his paternal instinct to keep his family together, but it would be impossible for him to know how Naomi felt. Simply because, he is not a mother. The fact this is also reflected in the choice of director, I find that amazing. It was a pleasure to watch, and I thank you Marisol Adler Brilliant show, brilliant after show talks too :)
I've been watching sci-fi for 60+ years and this episode is probably the best ever produced from any series. The finale with Naomi launching her self out of the airlock crushes every other attempt to portray that moment. Thank you. Worthy of an Emmy or Oscar

Holden's conscience in his head: "Do the right thing." Holden: "Ah goddammit, you're right, here we go again." Marco in his head: "This is the right thing to do!" Marco's counscience: "Are you sure?" Marco: "It is, shut up voice!"
Thank you guys! There are not many shows with writers, directors, actors and many more who are so enthusiastic about their work and have so much respect for the source material! This season is one of my favourite so far. You did a fantastic job!

Great episode, especially when Naomi spaced herself & survived. I love how the Expanse provide Factual Space/Science details. 💙
Dominque did such an amazing job this episode. I definitely cried.
This episode is amazing for me. It explains so much about her character that we have seen from season 1 to now and it makes so much sense.
The Expanse is the only show I can think of that I'm already looking forward to rewatching again from the beginning. So great! I want to thank all the creators, actors, crew and people who made it possible. And huuuuge props to Ms. Tipper for an absolutely incredible performance in this episode!
This season is playing like a 10-hour character drama!!
So glad we got ten episodes
It's becoming too soapy... I prefered the hard SciFi of the earlier seasons
f**k off man! It's about telling a story and having a character buildup. If you like only explosions and special effects sci-fi's with 0 background and brain you can go and watch a Michael Bay movie.
@@tudoru6551 that's not what hard sci-fi is. That is action. What makes The Expanse great and unique is not making a cheap drama out of a dysfunctional family in space. We get it, they have issues. Now let's go back to the details within the complex scientific, anthropologic and inter governmental context.
What a fantastic episode. Cheers to Mme. Tipper and the rest of the cast for continuing to deliver some of the best performances I've ever seen on TV.
Agree this episode is Emmy worthy. I was absolutely shaken. Completely stunned by what I was watching and how it was affecting me.
Dominique Tipper has always been great on this show, but last night, she was INCREDIBLE. There was no Amos, no Chrisjen, no Drummer, but it was still the best episode of the season.
I think Gaugamela was better, but this was definitely a close second.
Chrissie was kinda there in a tight beam message.
Don't tell her I called her that. 🤐🤫😥
Tipper was at her best in this episode ... simply amazing stuff.
@@raphaelatienza Wes calls her "Krissie," doesn't he?
@@thepuncakian2024 I agree with you, barely. They're two totally different episodes, but each incredibly powerful in their own ways.
I must say i was also thinking Naomi is ending it (like all other characters present in the scene) and after i realised that she is actually trying to get to another ship i was double shocked, amazing scene.
AMAZING SCENE!!!
same! all i could think No Naomi, you're the one who always finds a way to survive. Holden is the suicidal numbskull. not you baby!...then, she blows my mind again
One amazing episode after another. The Expanse continues to outshine almost everything else on TV. Certainly any other science fiction show.
This episode was freaking awesome. I thought they were going to kill her off. I was literally screaming!!
Me too! 😭 I was crying and thinking it would be a completely different show without her.
I thought the same thing.
Same!

Even though I'd read the book, I was unbelievably stressed out.
I think this episode had the best acting Dominique Tipper has ever done
This episode was great...
Space Battle was crazyy
When the roci was spinning firing the pdcs I let out a strange gleefull high pitch noise lol

The Expanse: one of the best tv show in the last years ✨
Wonderful episode. So emotional. I guess I missed a lot of the details of Naomi's escape in the book, so the show's take took me completely off guard. Dominique was great.
Dominique was fantastic! I can't even count how many times I cried!
So glad the show included Naomi's space walk sans suit. It was an incredible moment in the books & just as effective on the show.
Stunning episode. Love hearing all the behind the scenes.
Excellent and so emotional! Well done to Naomi, Marcos and Filip!
Loving hearing the actors / writers insights on this amazing show.
Thanks to Ty & That Guy for bringing us these glimpses into another side of this universe.
Wish they were twice as long!!
That scene with Brent Sexton and Dominique, where Cyn comes clean about hiding Filip, was brilliant.
I love The Expanse and this season is so so good. I have loved Dominque/Naomi throughout all the seasons, I think she is awesome. This season is no different and this latest episode is simply mind-blowing. I've read the books, so I was waiting to see if she was going to do her spacewalk. Can't wait to see the next episode. Thank you Miss Tipper !!!
Hear, here! To Dominique Tipper for moving me to tears in this one episode so many times I can't even count them!
Reading the books where Naomi just made the impossible was sooo amazing and also breathtaking, but now watching it with my eyes was bruuutal.
This part remembers me a specific Stargate episode where Teal'c and O'Neill had the do the same thing.
You, guys are amazing!
This episode was off the chain!!!!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😎😎😎🔥🔥🔥
BTW, Thank you Jeff for supporting this show. I work for you and I love science fiction and fantasy and you are making my dreams come true.
I'm glad they cleared up the space jump, I feel there will be lots of people thinking to previous movies where people die as soon they get into the vacuum of space.
Way back in season 1 they have a belter open their helmet and clean their visor.
But why did Cyn die so quickly
@@Steve_McMillen He didn't exhale and probably caused his lungs to collapse or whatever happens when you don't exhale your oxygen out.
@@Steve_McMillenNaomi was prepared, so she exhaled unlike Cyn.
@@Steve_McMillen That did seem a bit off. But over weight out of shape belter. Naomi had trained for gravity. Maybe he just gave up. It did seem off.
Would be better if he pulled his arm in and the kid cycled the air lock.
This show is RIVETING. Every aspect of it is amazing, SFX, cast, story, sound, music. Amazing.
I wish they that talked about Roci's Cinnamon roll. That was just pure Spaceship porn for me.
Yes that was beautiful
Me too! Pure orgasmic spaceship pleasure: amazing!
Bull: I'll try spinning, that's a good trick!
That was fucking incredible.
Ngl I was making some unwholesome noises during that part.
One best most spectacular episodes I've ever seen congrats guys, Dominique was a force in this one.
Totally agree with you. Spectacular balance of talking and space action .... those last 3 minutes of the episode; amazing!
Agree 100%
They copied the scene from dark matter. The leap from one ship to another. But I have to say that they pulled this off better and more realistic.
Dominique you were so great in this! Brought everybody to tears.
I literally gasped in that final scene. I am so here for everything Naomi is doing this season.
That ending got me! The only other show that would get me like that was 24. When the credits roll, and I'm feeling stress, anger, and depression at the same time, it's a great show!
Bull in boss mode this episode with his PDC's garden sprinkler maneuver.
I'm glad they decided to bring him in better late than never
I had to hold my breath when she did that jump until she got in the ship. :D
Love Ty's acid humor, Wes' purity and Dom's honest "in the moment" portrayals. Thank you for these BTS videos. Always learn something.
Holy crap ! That attention to detail when Naomi in vacuum was amazing ! This was probably my 2nd best episode .
I love The Expanse sooo very much. These aftershow shows are such a treat. Thank you.
Such a great episode!
Dominque Tipper is killing it!
Thanks, the Expanse is one of my favourite shows and a bright light in life, a prime example of character driven sci fi done so right!
Thanks again! 👍
It was a pleasure to watch, and I thank you Marisol Adler
Brilliant show, brilliant after show talks too :)
This episode had me crying and screaming, just amazing.
I've been watching sci-fi for 60+ years and this episode is probably the best ever produced from any series.
The finale with Naomi launching her self out of the airlock crushes every other attempt to portray that moment. Thank you.
Worthy of an Emmy or Oscar
Such an amazing episode, one of the very best in the series
That ending, just as much feels as I got from the book
Definitely one of the best episodes this season.. Very well directed!
This is the best, strongest scifi series to ever grace our screens. What an AMAZING episode. The last few minutes ..... incredible.
Dominique was stupendous in this episode - as were the Marco & Philip actors. I think this episode was possibly one of the series best. Hearing that a woman directed this episode, I feel may have assisted Dominique knock her scenes out of the park; stupendous work!
THIS SERIES MUST CONTINUE BEYOND SERIES 6 !!!!! "SAVE THE EXPANSE: VERSION 2"
Holy hell... I just finished the episode. My god it was amazing! Seriously, thank all of you so much! Any person involved in the show I give my love! Thank you!
I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation throughout the _entire_ episode. Absolutely fantastic!
I love how they use the actors’ names and the characters’ names interchangeably, and they keep catching themselves.
The Roci doing the death blossom was awesome too.
Last Starfighter is a classic.
Yeah right i knew i have seen that move before
This was such an emotional episode to watch! my heart broke for Cyn and Naomi - great job!
one of the most amazing end for episode 7 great job
Another brilliant dive. I look forward to the aftershow as much as the episode itself.
Amazing acting all around, as usual. But Dominique deserves everything for this performance. I can only imagine how tough those scenes were but she really did an amazing job. The writing is fantastic. Love this showwww
When naomi gets rejected by Philip and that slap it just killed me ...... It was like if someone put my heart in a dry ice and shattered it with a hammer
Loved this Aftershow & absolutely Loved Episode 7 ❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥
Bloody Fantastic!!
Thank you so MUCH to all Powers That Be that have seen fit to grace us with these vignettes: So much fun, so informative.
You all have such a great team.
Just a JOY to watch!
(Show ain't bad, either!)

Watching the aftershow right after watching the episode is the absolute best. Makes you feel like part of the family. Thanks for bringing this to us, Wes and Ty! If you guys ever find yourselves just west of Toronto and want a good home cooked meal, let me know :D
They might just go for something like that in shooting Season 6. They do lots of "on location" stuff outside Toronto. You'd probably need to link up with a fan group and make it a larger thing, say a Canada-style picnic, for cast and crew and you still have to deal with all the Covid mess and rules blocking a lot of the socialization we all used to do,
Best episode of the series, imo. Holy crap.
Love Wes Chatham 💜
S5 E7 surprised me! Great acting, outstanding writing, and over the top score.
Holden's conscience in his head: "Do the right thing."
Holden: "Ah goddammit, you're right, here we go again."
Marco in his head: "This is the right thing to do!"
Marco's counscience: "Are you sure?"
Marco: "It is, shut up voice!"
Thank you guys! There are not many shows with writers, directors, actors and many more who are so enthusiastic about their work and have so much respect for the source material!
This season is one of my favourite so far. You did a fantastic job!
These after show videos are the icing on the cake 😁. Also season 5 is so made for multiple rewatches. Bloody awesome mate🙃
Great episode, great acting by all but esp. Dominique. :)
discovered this show a week ago, i've watched the whole 5 and a half seasons already, it's brilliant, love it, thank you.

Wow...just....wow. The emotions from her scene with Filip and telling why she left, the confession from Cyn, and the final betrayal of Filip striking her. Dom, you deserve praise, and a therapist! Kudos also to Keon...nailing a charismatic narcissist antagonist to a T.
Oh, and a brief but spectacular PVC spinning battle. 🎯
