Hi. I actually served in the Royal Tank regt and did some of my training on chieftain at Bovington. I made this kit many years ago and still have it. I’m currently working on a Takom kit. The level of detail is first class. I live 45miles from the tank museum here in the UK. I regularly visit it and attend the tankfest to meet up with old tank crew mates. Thank you for your excellent video and superb job
I've built this same kit by Tamiya and found it to be one of the easiest kits to assemble. Reason being it was very well designed and very precision in its fit and detail. One of my favorite British tanks! I painted it in the camo design from the box and it turned out wonderful.
qdc your builds are top notch, your videos are silent and satisfying to watch. I know your model kit builds doesn't have that much weathering but that's ok, the way you paint and put weathering on your tanks is enough to call you a skilled builder. Please continue building model kits, i hope you post latest builds!
Quite a nice build and video. For such an old kit it is a fun kit to build and looks like the Chieftain Mk.3 The biggest difference between a Mk.3 and a Mk.5 is the Loader's split hatch on top of the turret. On the Mk.3 the hatch is at an angle as on this kit whereas on the Mk.5 that hatch is straight. I also used Tamiya Extra Thin liquid cement to add cast texture to the turret and glacis. I brush the liquid cement on a small area then use a short stiff bristle brush to stipple it. The Chieftain NATO Black and NATO Green camouflage paint in real life had hard edges not feathered. I mask off the dark colour and then paint the camouflage. Silly Putty makes a fantastic masking material. Your videos are most certainly encouraging.
what a humble guy. I am new to model building and this is the 1st tank I bought. I have zero skills on painting (that will be the next stage) but I'm gonna try building first. Good Luck to me. And Thanks for the video. 👍
Welcome to this hobby 😃😃. Since you're new to this hobby, you will meet a lot of different model kit builders with different attitudes and approaches to building a model kit. But no matter what style you decide to build and paint your model, the most important thing is to enjoy it. You will find that this hobby will last a lifetime if you truly enjoy it. Take care and again, welcome to this hobby. 😃😃
Always a pleasure to watch a new video of yours Colin, have to mention though, that British Camo is Green and Matt Black. There are Desert Camos and such, but whenever you see the British Army out and about, it's always the British Green and Matt Black. Spent 22 years of my life with the British Army, and even had to paint quite a few Scorpions, Stallwarts, Trucks and Landies myself, so got pretty tired of always seeing it ;) Great job on the Chieftain, one of my favourit British Tanks !.
Thanks. I didn't know it was actually black. I simply followed Tamiya's instructions on the paint. You must be proud serving your country for such a long time! :)
Yep, 22 years British Army service here too. You're 100% correct and whilst the colours here might look ok, they're not right. My only other quibble is the bent-back antenna - I've NEVER seen this on a British tank - vhf antennas don't function correctly unless they're vertical and straight.
I actually live near the Bovington tank museum and have spent many of my childhood days looking around the museum with my father . the chieftain was Britain's main battle tank when I was growing up. great build qdc, thanks for the memories 👍
It appears I haven't watched this video until now, but better late than never.. :) This is a classic Tamiya kit at its very best, in my opinion. I built one years ago, I am tempted to buy another one and do it again.. :) :)
fantastic job on this iconic tank I must admit I loved driving them when I was in the army and yes they did have a bad reputation for breaking down but great tank all the same thank you for building it for us 👍👍👍
Qdc your creativity shines man, nice job. My favorite part when I painted this kit was the insulation around the barrel, it defined the tank wonderfully.
bloody good job buddy......thank you for being so respectful to my countries big tank of it's day.....in it's day it was a horror on the battlefield and even now the gun is capable of penetrating an Abram's or T90....you were kind to show such respect....your a class act buddy....you need to build more as i've watched all yours lol....it's easy viewing....very well down brother....god bless and keep setting a grand example......thank you for all the many hours of enjoyment with your channel....my regards and respect....
It would have to be very close to penetrate an M1A2 Tusk II. Highly unlikely. Love the Britts though, very happy to have them as our oldest and closest allie. Had a marine friend that worked with British Royal marines and he said them are extremely high pace and are trained better in small unit tactics than us.
I know this is an old video but I’m going to comment anyways. I was inspired by your build and got a tamiya chieftain. It’s a very nice kit for it age. The figures are nice too. I only struggled with the tracks....had to use epoxy on them. I was unsure about the green/ dark green camo scheme. My gut told me to go with the nato colors. I followed the Tamiya scheme anyways and used several shades of green like you recommended. The results were fantastic. This is probably one of my best builds. Thankyou for the great vids...keep them coming.
Thanks David. I agree with you. The Tank Museum has made a series of excellent videos on UA-cam that's well worth watching. Those videos inspired me to build other kits as well. Take care.
You totally resurrected this old kit! I definitely had my reservations about this one. I might just pick up one of these. I just wish there was an aftermarket barrel option.
Great job David as always. This really is a great kit and I am going to build it soon after the group builds that I am doing at the moment. I love the Chieftain tank and although it had a crappy engine, the rest of the tank was really very good for it's day. Many thanks for sharing this great video and for going into detail on the painting of the model. Have fun with your next build David, Joe
Thanks Joe's Model Kit's for your kind words. I agree the greatest weakness of the Chieftain tank was it's engine but overall, it was a real good tank for it's day.
qdc748a Thank you for this tutorial! It is really detailed and just what I needed to give me some direction on my build. I really appreciate you taking the time to do a video. Thank you buddy, I could hug you. Have a great weekend!! :)
Another lovely job. I am amused by the two tone green camouflage though. I am going to go buy another one today and do it in the Canadian prairie camo. I always look forward to your videos and you must get yourself to Bovington and Duxford.
Im looking at re doing one of these there great models,This kit was one of my first back to the hobby kits and I think sometimes its nice to revist and see how your model making has improved, nice channel by the way
Greetings from the UK. Just like to say that I enjoy your videos a lot. I have recently started modelling again after a more than 30 year break! Must admit that I am not a great tank fan(even the Chieftain and even though I am a Brit); aircraft and ships are my particular interests but I have found a lot of inspiration in your films. After such a long absence I am sadly out of date with many of my techniques and have yet to try photoetch (my Zvezda Suvorov is the guinea pig!). Your style suits me because you are not over technical in your presentation and don't 'over complicate' (mean that in a good way). Many of the vids I have watched put me off trying new things but yours do the opposite. Thanks to you my painting technique has come on a treat.
You're welcome Michael Evans :) My goal in making these videos is to encourage others, like yourself, to build their own model kits. Feedback from folks like you really help me because it tells me that I'm on the right track. Thanks. By the way, I plan to make an airplane model soon. I plan to build a F6F Hellcat and I plan to present the kit on real aircraft carrier! I'm not kidding! Maybe you'll like that video coming soon. Take care and have a wonderful day!
A very good build, Sir. I did this same model several months back while recuperating from surgery. I took the time to replicate the gun mantlet cover and added the hanging straps shown on the box art. As you noted, a good, easy build and it came out very nice indeed. Keep the videos coming, please.
Amazing job. I remember these tanks rumbling down public roads around Bovington before turning off and running across country. A great sight. I expect Health & Safety prevents them doing that today.
QDC! Haven't seen you for a while. awesome build. I remember building this kit waaaay back when. those molds have held up well. can't wait to see what you do next.
Those old Tamiya kits hold up pretty well after 40 odd years don't they?! :-D I made an Australian Army Leopard AS1 from the Tamiya #35112 A4 kit a few years back. Still one of my favourite builds ever.

Some modelers are probably blind?! Color shema is for MK.5 NATO Green and NATO Black. Why is there gray instead of black?
