    Great video - well done, and especially helpful. Good luck to you and the Volvo!

    Galvanic corrosion can really mess-up roadside repairs. Anytime I have a steel fastener going into an aluminum part I ALWAYS use anti-seize compound on the fastener before installing it. I would recommend backing out those screws going into the heatsink and applying a dab of anti-seize on them - it'll save you a ton of frustation.

    Also clean the elect connection to the ignition module as they get corroded as mine was just like the electrical connection on the throttle position sensor the mad sensor etc. Use electrical contact ceaner cleaning these fixed my car

    Hi. so the problem was sure the Ign module right? how about the tach? did it fix because of that?

    I have a similar problem with my 94' 940. The engine stalled out while I was idling and I'm getting the diagnostic code 1-4-4. I did some research and its likely that there is something wrong with the ignition control module. Where is that located in the car and what can I do to fix it?

      Check the crank position sensor, ignition coil, injectors, and fuel pump relay to start.

    I got the same ignition module a Taiwan made but without heat conducting paste. What would happen if we install the ignation module without that paste

      I imagine that it won’t last as long, the heat will eventually fry it probably.

    Thanx for the great video. I have a 745 with identical problems to yours.. I recently replaced the ignition relay and after that it fired up immediately but when I tried it again a week later it again wouldn't start up. I thought I'd change the ignition control module as well since your video showed exactly how to do it. Alas there is no ignition control module anywhere to be seen? I took the air filter out and looked to be sure but there simply isn't one I can see. I'd expect it to be easy to find since it has to sit against the chassis but I checked both sides and nothing. I noticed you have the engine with the BOSCH ignition coil while mine is one of the last models and it has the REX/Regina ignition coil which is much more of a pain to change and furthermore can't be bought anywhere so I'll have to check wrecking yards and hope for the best if it's that. I still hope to try changing the control module before trying that but I need someone to tell me where to look. So if you know, all help will be appriciated.

    I have a 93 940 wagon non turbo and got my ignition coil replaced. It drove perfectly and then died while driving 2 weeks later... I'm wondering if it is the same issue you had

    • @plightn
      @plightn  Рік тому

      Well the ignition module usually means slowing down but not dying. More likely it’s your distributor or fuel relay.

    Good Job Nick
    This was helpful.
    Is there some form of a Multi Meter Test for the module do discern if it's bad?

    • @plightn
      @plightn  5 років тому

      Evan Anderson that’s a great question. I am not sure my mechanic was super cryptic when I asked how he determined it was that module, he said he plugged in some ancient tool no one uses anymore. There might be a was to load test it with a multimeter.

      Sometimes a mechanic will devise a method that works with a Multi Meter.
      He might have used the outdated OBD reader.
      I went to a mechanic and was told that he no longer had the adapter.
      Oh Well
      Thanks Anyway

    Would this be the same for a 1994 940? I have had the same problems and can't figure out what it could be

    • @plightn
      @plightn  7 років тому

      Well yes it could be the issue but you should run a few tests to make sure it's not something else. You don't want to throw parts at it, the ignition control module is 155$. Loss of power could be due to other issues like a clogged exhaust or bad fuel pressure. You should really test to make sure these other things aren't an issue first.

    • @78910milo

      mine has stopped running all together i have replaced the cap and rotor... i will see if someone will let me borrow one that works :)

    • @plightn
      @plightn  7 років тому +1

      That's a great idea if that is an option for you! Yes my distributor failed on me while I was driving leaving me stranded, they do recommend changing out the cap and rotor after 50k miles but the re-manufactured stuff can be worse.

      Check the Crank Position Sensor. The 1 meter cord afixes to the passenger compartment firewall, in the engine compartment. This was the heat-stall/no-restart problem on my Volvo 940.
      The insulation frays after 20 years of life, rendering the sensor useless
      When does your car not start? Other causes hot-no-start may be an ignition power stage (replaced in this video) or a fuel pump relay

  • @l00pdigga42

    can a faulty ignition module cause no power/crank?

    • @plightn
      @plightn  3 роки тому

      Not in my experience, it usually causes a loss of power.

    What paste is that?

    • @plightn
      @plightn  4 роки тому

      Like a thermal paste for a CPU, that transmits heat from the unit into the metal body to dissipate it. It came with the unit.

    • @plightn
      @plightn  5 років тому

      I did not have a no start problem, it would struggle when trying to accelerate and go uphill. If you have a no start try to diagnose the issue, is it spark, air or fuel.
