I've watched Goodfellas many times yet I always forgot that the movie is based on a true story. The characters were so realistically terrifying that it's hard to believe that those stuff actually happened in real life
Daniel Day Lewis wasn't even acting as Abraham Lincoln, he literally BECAME Lincoln. The man disappeared to his role and you found yourself a believable portrayal of Lincoln that's the best you've seen on screen. DDL is a legend
The Schindler's list will always break my heart cause the same free hate that hunted the honest people back in WW II is coming back among the current wars from Israel and Ukraine. Not just Jewish, but all the people who get caught in the crossfire. Biopics might be a little hard to watch but if we don't learn anything from the story, we will not be ready to face it ourselves.
it's soo sad to see that the same level of hatred and dehumanization that the Nazis expressed towards the Jewish people is now repeated by Israel/Zionists towards the Palestinian people.
I've seen Schindler's List many times and every time I watched it, it's still gave the exact same tear in my eye. Easily one of the greatest Best Picture winners in Oscar history, Spielberg rules!
I agree. Spielberg cemented his legacy with this movie. I watch this every year on Holocaust Remembrance Day. It is a punch in the gut every time I watch it but I feel that I must so that something like this will not be forgotten. Never forget!
I remember watching The Elephant Man when I was 10 years old in 1981. I didn't really get the underlying themes at the time but I absolutely bawled when he laid down on his back at the end of the movie. I have watched that many times since I have cried even harder each time I watch it. When Joseph yells that he is a human being literally broke my heart beyond repair. This movie stills makes my heart hurt 40+ years since I watched it the first time.
I'm 26 and just watched Schindler's List I believe it's so important to keep history in our back thoughts so we never repeat it. I was blown away emotionally with this movie I am glad I watched it. It's a important movie to be watched and even to this day I feel so sorry for the losses that took place in that time. Brilliant movie Steven Spielberg did a masterpiece.
This is a controversial choice but I loved Bohemian Rhapsody. Say what you want about it, the film is amazing and when I first saw the film in cinemas I was captivated from start to finish. It was a true celebration of the band's music. Other biopics that I really enjoyed also; Charlie Wilson's War, Sophie's Choice, Elvis, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, The Imitation Game, Saving Mr. Banks, Captain Phillips and not films but the two miniseries Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Mojo you put some incredible films on this list including: Goodfellas, Schindler's List, Raging Bull, Oppenheimer and The Pianist.
Jessica Lange as Francis Farmer was mind blowing and powerful. The way it deals with mental illness during the 40’s and 50’s is brutal. She gave a tour de force performance.
Oppenheimer, Coal Miner’s Daughter, Patton, Walk The Line, The Elephant Man, Goodfellas, Ray, Gandhi, Lincoln, Raging Bull, Malcolm X, Lawrence Of Arabian and Schindler’s List are my personal favorites.
Big George Foreman was my favorite movie of 2023, even if you're not a boxing fan or a sports fan in general, it's still a great movie that everyone can enjoy, it's about more than his career as a fighter, it's a redemption story about learning who you really are. It's a 10 out of 10.
There are a TON of biopics I love that r missing from this list: King Richard, Tick Tick Boom!, Judas and the Black Messiah, Mank, Judy, Rocketman, Harriet, Bohemian Rhapsody, Vice, At Eternity’s Gate, Green Book, Darkest Hour, I, Tonya, Hacksaw Ridge, Lion, Steve Jobs, The Revenant, Bridge of Spies, Joy, The Theory of Everything, The Imitation Game, American Sniper, The Wolf of Wall Street, Dallas Buyers Club, The Aviator, Finding Neverland, Capote, The Last King of Scotland too many others to name, but you get my point.
- Cinderella Man - Valkyrae (Partially a bio pic) - Ben Hur (I would count it in as a bio-pic) - Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile There are actually many more.
I saw Schindler's List when I was 19 in theaters. I still believe everyone should watch it once. Both of my now grown kids saw it in high school with my permission.
I completely agree Angela. My dad showed me the film when I was about 12, it was on a video and it took ages to rewind lol. My dad said it was important i watch a film like that so we never forget the atrocities that occurred. I’m guna show my son it when he’s a bit older too. X
Goodfellas truly is one of the greatest films of all time. Scorcese is a master at telling true stories especially Raging Bull and Wolf of Wall Street. He also did another excellent biopic that should be mentioned, The Aviator about the life of Howard Hughes and portrayed by Leo DiCaprio. Ben Kingsley truly disappeared into the role of Gandhi, one of the best biopic portrayals alongside Robert DeNiro and Daniel Day Lewis. Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything should also be included here. Others should also be Cate Blanchett's Elizabeth, Renee Zellweger's Judy, Ian McKellan's Gods and Monsters, Gary Busey's The Buddy Holly Story, Angelina Jolie's Changeling and Christian Bale's Vice.
Amadeus still stands out for me, among many, many other things, for featuring the best performance of an actor impersonating an old man, and the best old-person make up. I wonder if "Maestro" can reach that level of perfection.
Lawrence of Arabia is the pinnacle of cinema in every single regard! Goodfellas doesn't feel real. That film is too perfect. It's rewatchable anyday of the week. Unpopular Opinion: The Pianist is lightyears better than Schindler's List.
A biopic that was just released is the over due credit given to the architect of the historic March on Washington in 1963, Bayard Rustin in the film Rustin. There is a choral work about him that our chorus performed some years back. I am so gratified he is finally getting the recognition he so richly deserves. Domingo Colman gives a realistic portrayal of Bayard Rustin so much so, it’s as if one goes back in time, witnessing these evens unfold.
I’d add Temple Grandin. It may not get as much recognition since it was not a theatrical release, but it was an excellent depiction of one of my heroes.
This list seems to be very "male" dominated and top heavy in showing their achievements. I think it's a travesty that MANY of Meryl Streep's bio pics were not listed (Iron Lady...incredible performance, Florence Foster Jenkins, Suffragette, Julie and Julia, Postcards from the Edge and A Cry In the Dark), seriously Meryl is the QUEEN of the biopics and she didn't even get a mention here. Angela Basset's portrayal of Tina Turner in What's Love Got To Do With It, should have also made the list. Julia Roberts' Erin Brockovich...brilliant. Diana Ross in "Lady Sings the Blues", Cate Blanchett's Elizabeth, Renee Zellweger's Judy...absolutely heart wrenching. Shocked these weren't included. Others? Rami Malek's Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rapsody. Definitely deserved to be on this list. His painstaking attention to detail (especially the scene from Live Aid, was truly phenomenal), there's a side by side comparison on youtube, just search: FULL Queen at LIVE AID Side By Side Comparison with Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody 2018).
I’ve seen a lot of “best biopics” content circulating recently and hardly any mention ones with female leads and it is so frustrating because it’s not like there aren’t any out there. The Post and Erin Brokovich are two that come to mind for me that I’m a huge fan of 🙌
Ok does Watch Mojo have something against Leonardo DiCaprio? Because that man has done some terrific biopics and not even one was mentioned. The Aviator? Catch me if you can? The Basketball Diaries? J. Edgar? The Wolf of Wallstreet? You guys really slighted him here
Although not a true biopic but still well produced and acted is Hoffa, starring Jack Nicholson and Danny DeVito. And of course there's Rocketman about Elton John and Bohemian Rhapsody about Freddy Mercury of Queen.
"Reds" should be high on this list. Sheer brilliance. Also, "The Imitation Game" and "The Social Network" should be here. I was thrilled to see "The Last Emperor" included. Brilliant film. "Walk the Line" as a film is over-rated. Also, while RDJ's performance in "Chaplin" is superb, the film itself is not worthy of inclusion here. While the films themselves were not necessarily of this caliber, mention must be made of the great Chadwick Boseman, who was well on his way to becoming the King of biopics, having given outstanding performances in "42" as Jackie Robinson, in "Get On Up" as James Brown and in "Marshall" as the young Thurgood Marshall.
Catch Me If You Can is a favourite of mine. Maybe not a cinematic juggernaut but its a great film, well told story and Leo DiCaprio doing Leo DiCaprio things!
The best one is ‘Elvis’ starring Austin Butler. His performance is astonishing and it is a great presentation of his life. However you did not include it!
I cried more at The Elephant Man than I did for Schindler's List. I know the holocaust was horrific and millions of people suffered in the concentration camps and round the world but J. Merrick......phew! John Hurt's portrayal stuck in my young mind. Even all these years later I get a lump in my throat telling people of the movie.
Honestly, both Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. really deserved Oscar nominations for their terrific performances in Oppenheimer. That nominations really needs to happen.
I never seen anybody mention Argo in the comments and I know it has some inaccuracies but it’s one of my favorite movies so imma toss Argo into the hat for a part two 😆
What a list! Xlnt choices; some of my favorites: Yankee doodle dandy with James Cagney, Young Mr. Lincoln, with Henry Fonda, Rhapsody in blue, Alan Alda, Young Tom Edison, with Mickey Rooney, Sargeant York, with Gary Cooper. Some of these old films are still watchable.
Totally agree with you guys on Malcolm X. Denzel should have Won the Oscar. And Spike should have been at least nominated. But you know...#OscarsSoWhite 😮
To say that the Gandhi movie was casting an actor, by putting brown face on Ben Kingsley, is totally ridiculous, for the latter is Indian🇮🇳 by descent, but British🇬🇧 by birth.
Cillian Murphy in Peaky Blinders set up after WW1 : Leading a brutal gang, robbering, killing people. Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer set up after WW2 : Making Nuclear Bomb which killed around 200,000 people So may be in WW3 movie he will destroy the whole universe 😂😂😂😂
Control is definitely in my top 5, so beautifully shot, well acted and covers a huge emotional range. But my #1 by a wide margin is Into the Wild. It's a damn near perfect movie, really don't see how it missed this list. Also the Right Stuff!
need a second list Born on the fourth of July The Jolson Story The Glenn Miller story I Wanna Dance With Somebody Chariots Of Fire The Hurricane Glory Awakenings theres so many stellar movies that you could make several lists
Raging Bull is a great movie but I can’t bring myself watching it again. Don’t get me wrong, both the director and the actors did a phenomenal job on it, but it’s so violent and somewhat disturbing.
More: 1. The Imitation Game 2. Hacksaw Ridge 3. The Man Who Knew Infinity 4. Downfall 5. Wolf of Wall Street 6. Theory of everything 7. A Million Miles Away 8. First Man 9. Steve Jobs 10. Elvis

Schindler's List is truly one of the very best biographical films ever made & it serves it well.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Bonnie & Clyde, The Doors, The Right Stuff, Downfall.
Elvis and Selena
American Gangster.
@@stephanievillarreal148yes, very good actings
Schindlers List is the jewel in the crown of Spielberg films. The story is phenomenal, the cinematography is unique, and the acting is fantastic
I've watched Goodfellas many times yet I always forgot that the movie is based on a true story. The characters were so realistically terrifying that it's hard to believe that those stuff actually happened in real life
De Niro's performance in Raging Bull is the perfection of acting.
Daniel Day Lewis wasn't even acting as Abraham Lincoln, he literally BECAME Lincoln. The man disappeared to his role and you found yourself a believable portrayal of Lincoln that's the best you've seen on screen. DDL is a legend

Well said.
it's soo sad to see that the same level of hatred and dehumanization that the Nazis expressed towards the Jewish people is now repeated by Israel/Zionists towards the Palestinian people.
Israel is no better than any other colonial power. Even 1930’s Germany
Btw Ukraine and Israel are two very different conflicts.
We repeat historical atrocities all the time, sadly. And the internet hasn’t made us any smarter
I've seen Schindler's List many times and every time I watched it, it's still gave the exact same tear in my eye. Easily one of the greatest Best Picture winners in Oscar history, Spielberg rules!
that's a movie i can't sit through again because i'm always depressed and sad by the end of it

Such a great list . Would love to add the Tina Turner biopic “What’s Love Got to Do with it” Angela Basset gave an Oscar worthy performance
Oppenheimer deserves all the awards! Never has three hours passed so quickly.xx
Walk The Line will always be one of my all time favourite movies. Both Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon were terrific.
I think even Rocketman was a nice biopic. It unapologetically showed the life of Elton John.
My Left Foot 1989 was an excellent biopic with an amazing Daniel Day Lewis performance.
I'm 26 and just watched Schindler's List I believe it's so important to keep history in our back thoughts so we never repeat it. I was blown away emotionally with this movie I am glad I watched it. Nowhere boy by Sam Taylor Johnson & starring Aaron Taylor Johnson as John Lennon is worth watching!

Imortal beloved Beethoven biopic starring Gary Oldman
T.E. Lawrence fought in World War 1, not World War 2. He died in 1935.
The Background music is so soothing.
I thought Oppenheimer would be number 1 but you put that in number 20!!!
It was indeed a real masterpiece and top 3 movies of Nolan
Gandhi (1982) also deserves criticism for putting brown face on Ben Kingsley instead of casting an Indian actor for the title role.
Exactly
If you bothered to even check, Ben Kingsley is half Indian so they did cast an Indian actor in the role.
@@navidhudson7065 but they still brown faced him, which doesn’t put him off the hook
