As for neck dive just get a thick leather strap with a raw inner surface much like bass players use. Eliminates neck dive right fast. Also putting a heavy trim like a bigsby on it helps.
Found one at a pawn shop and paid just over $100...Absolutely great sound and feel. I taped a weight to the strap to counter the neck dive. I play it lower to counter the fatigue from stretching your arm. Also had to level a couple of frets. I was going to install new electronics but it's almost pointless since it sounds so good. Thanks for the demo!
I got one at a pawnshop for 80 bucks, and I feel its one of the best guitars I have played, which is crazy! I`ve had Gibson`s, and I really like this guitar.
I’ve noticed almost all epiphone SGs with wood finish have the half pick guard like yours but mine has the full puck guard. The only other epiphone SGs I’ve seen with the full pick guard are the plastic coated looking ones. I personally like the full pick guard look so I’m glad I have this one.
i've stopped playing guitar for 3-2 years ago,i stopped because there werent alot of left handed guitars i can play with. i recently saw at my local guitar shop they had this and epiphone les paul custom pro. This two combined is about SGD1.3k and this intrigued me to play again. Your demo is so good and very convincing now imma save up. thank you!!!
So happy to see this :) Was hoping someone would spot that hanging out in the background :) My dad gave both my brother and I a Silvertone guitar with case amp when we were kids. Thought its time to start getting some of that stuff out.. So glad you're grandfather was able to pass one on to you, too :) Best to you and yours.. Ty...
It's so funny you mentioned the neck heavy issue. Every time I stand up while playing it had a huge tendency to slide downwards as you demonstrated. It's really frustrating pushing up against the neck of the guitar while playing
I bought the Epi G400 '61 version of the '61Gibson SG from musicians friend for about 600 bucks in '06. Has the Heritage Cherry finish, wish it had the mat finish on the neck. The neck joint really IS frail and will break because of the short tenon. It WILL nose dive on ya so you have to hold the thing so you're always keeping a slight "up" pressure with your left arm which will tire you out. The bridge pickup is a screamer but a little eq will take that out. My Gibson SG Goth , is more balanced, the tenon is longer and stronger, doesn't nose dive but can't get the setup low enough. G400 almost frets itself. Damn fine guitar, great finish, glad it doesn't have those god-awful green tuners, and plays fantastic.
nice review, I chose to buy the Epi SQ Special instead of the Epi G400 because i prefer a master volume and master tone. I really like fact the SG special is light weight as i play only at home in the seated position. I also installed a tusk nut ($10), grover tuners ($70) and Gibson Classic 57/57 Plus pick ups ($200) and the guitar screams. I dont have to worry if I ding or scratch the guitar. I've been playing and collecting guitar for over 40 years and my Epi SG is my go-to guitar that i play every day. Also, I completely agree with you regarding the G400 neck positioned about 2 inches to the left. I prefer function over form and like you, felt the the G400 neck position was a bit awkward. Thanks again for your review and all the best in 2017.
These are awesome. I just got a Gibson SG STD. On CL for $400. Unbelievable deal. I had been cracked and glued at the headstock, but at $400 you just can't beat it. And angled Gibson Headstocks are prone to break anyway...
Cherry hot, the Epiphone SG was made for heavy fretting and low distortions. With those humbucker pick ups, you can get a clean twinge sound. What's neat about this model is if set right, you can change from clean to distorted with one flick of the switch. This baby was made for rocking.
Great review. I may be getting one of these for like $60! Cracked headstock. But just along one side of the machine head holes. Fixable. I’ll either keep for myself or sell for $200. We’ll see. No reason to spend more than $1,000. Grip it and rip it.
I will tell you I recently bought the Epiphone SG deluxe flame top cherry The lead guitarist in my first-ever rock band 40 plus years ago had one So far sentimental reasons I had to bring one into my collection and I am totally in love with it and hardly can play another guitar in my collection The fit finish is spot-on The bite from the pickups is strong the field of the guitar is great and with minimal setup to get it true holds tune and what else do you need to say
A comprable SG Gibson is $1,500 Also a comprable Les Paul to the Epiphone Les Paul I bought is probably 15 to $1,600 I paid 1000 for both Bother honey Burst Epiphone and it is absolutely sweet as well
I like Les Pauls, especially the Custom PRO despite its weight, but SGs are the ones that fit my price range a little bit more and are much more perfect for a beginner like me.
Thanks man :) I ended up playing a little hunk of a song of mine there, but,99% of the time I'm doing these videos, I don't have any idea at all what I'm going to say or play when the camera starts rolling :)
When I learned "Old man" by Neil Young my picking hand changed forever and random noodling on an acoustic suddenly started to sound like I knew what I was doing. "That's beautiful what is that?" "I dunno, I'm just playing old man's picking patterns on random weird chords."
I own one and play it. They are neck heavy...but that can be fixed. One: Schaller makes a really nice set of keystone style tuners with the plastic keys. They are lighter than the metals keyed grovers. Yes, it does make that much of a difference! it's in the leverage. Two: Move the strap button to the BACK of the upper horn, not the tip!! This will keep it laying on your body correctly and it really changes the balance in the right way. Try it...you won't be disappointed.
Note about hard gibson cases: There is an aluminum band that goes around the entire top of the case when it is open. If you bang your guitar on that metal band it will leave an indentation on your guitar. I stopped using my Gibson case for that reason.
THE DARKMEAT97 YOU OBVIOUSLY REPEAT BULL SHIT YOU HEAR JUST LIKE CNN...YOU EITHER NEED AN EXCUSE TO BE A TIGHT WAD OR YOU JUST ARE FOOLISH ENOUGH TO SOUND LIKE A PARROT...
Yeah, I have an Epiphone Goth G400 and it's a neck-heavy too, so this is the reason I recorded only once on it. (I love it because reaching the higher frets is so convenient compare to LP shape but when I record something I'm usually standing and I was afraid of broking its neck) Of course I play a lot with it sitting in a chair. :-) I thought it's because of Goth is a relatively cheap guitar compare to "real" G400 so I thought they made it with thinner body to save some producing cost, but as I see not. I've never played on a Gibson Standard SG, so I'm courious that it has the same issue or not. What is your opinion? Or is there anybody who read this and have some experience with Gibson SG. (Special, or Standard... etc... )
Never had an SG myself, but I‘d never turn my nose up at it either. It’s been used too frequently by favorite artists of mine (Eric Clapton, Terry Kath, Tommy Shaw, Dicky Betts, Steve Clark, Jimmy Page, Barry Godreau, Carlos Santana, Pete Townshend) for that. Didn’t Herritage also dish out a faithful duplicate of the ES-335 in the late 90s? I think the 339 is also top heavy in the neck and headstock.
Aaaargh, the old " neck heavy " thing. Is that for stand up guitarists? I have an SG Epiphone that's amazing to play but i'm a sit down bedroom guitarist, a stand up home bass player and stand up online videogames player.
What do you think about the Gibson SG and all SG be it Eppi or Gibson they all have problems with the neck I have a 71 Gibson standard that it's neck is out being fixed
So I do own this guitar and I am trying to fix the neck heavy problem. Im currently looking at a new bridge set right now, would that be enough to balance it?
I traded a cheap ibanez for one of these off of craigslist. Except he re-wired it, and painted it. He did a horrible job on wiring so I completely re-did the wiring with Seymour Duncan Invaders and this thing has quickly become my favourite guitar. The neck is so playable and quick. I've been doing a lot of recording and writing with my band and it's so much better with this SG
I have a G400 Pro. When I first got it I was underwhelmed really. Looked into it more and found that the reason I was not loving it was because the fingerboard had extreme amounts of fret buzzing choking the notes and preventing notes from ringing true and sustaining. I had to do a load of fret levelling on this guitar as almost all the lower frets from 7 on-wards needed attention. This is really not good enough for the price you pay for Epiphone which is high end of budget guitar range. In my opinion both Vintage and Yamaha offer so much better. On my Vintage VS6 I had only to level 1 fret to achieve perfection whereas on the Epi it was at least 7 of the frets were out and by a mile which prevented obtaining a reasonably low action. Pick ups are ok on the Epi but nothing special and you may want to replace that as well. So all in all the price is building up and getting near to the cost of a Gibson SG special especially if you cannot do the work for yourself and need a guitar tech to do it for you. All in all then it is clear where Epiphone are making the savings and compromises and this is in the labour intensive tasks like fret levelling. They are chucking out a poor product made cheaply without care and attention where the action is set high to mask out the compromises that they have made and lack of care and attention to detail. Beginners may not notice this but a more intermediate player would. Buy a G 400 or G 400 Pro but expect to do a lot of work to make it a truly playable and pleasurable experience. having said all that I now do like the G 400 Pro because it plays properly like it should have of before it left the factory. I have had Epiphones before and all have suffered quality control issues. I would recommend either Vintage or Yamaha as better options for budget guitars.
I actually own a Vintage, and I must say in 2004 when I bought the Vs6, the Epiphone lost it on looks, and playability. However, I had to spend some extra cash to deal with all imperfections. Pickups, pots, jack, bridge and finally after fifteen years of wear a complete refret job in stainless steel. Nowadays I think Epiphone have improved, fret level can still be an issue.
@@umbertoyltp My vintage has a cream binding on the fretboard and what looks like none standard Wikinson pickups. It doesn't really look like the usual SG copies from Vintage. Some have referred to this model as Cherry Burst but I can't find it advertised anywhere. I did have to do some fret work on it to improve it's playability ,but no where near as much as I had to on the Epiphone
they're absolutely great guitar I have the same exact model as well as a Korean one and have gotten rid of my Gibson SGs I just seem to play the epis more... to get a rid of neck dive just use a leather strap
Congrats man! I have a Pegasus clone for my mech and I had a copper Plume Veil clone for my RDA. The RDA was DOA, had a friend get it going for me for a day or two, then it totally gave out for good. I have a Tug Boat clone on the way and I'm looking at the Fogger as well... Happy vaping... and thanks for coming back by the page :) Ty..
Seems like a great deck to work with.. hah, now just to get one with terminals that work! :) If you think of it, bug me in a few weeks when I get the replacement and have had some time to knock around with it.. I'll let you know what I think :) Ty..
Nice review! I bought this guitar as my first guitar back in October, and started learning, however I can't play while standing, do you have any tips regarding playing while standing other than trying to balance it with my hand? A reply is much appreciated :D
***** I can't really say anything since I've only been playing for 5 months and it's my 1st guitar however I think it's great if you don't know exactly what genre you will be playing ! you can play almost everything from folk music to heavy metal :P
How would it affect quality? American are the only ones who know how to sand wood? It’s stupid to spend the money for an American made guitar. All you’re paying fir is the higher taxes that the company must endure by existing in America. I don’t need it.
Tom Spallone id agree and disagree. There are very high quality custom shops around various parts of the world but these guitars (ephiphone) and price points are designed to cut certain corners to keep costs down. So if I wanted an imported Luteria Arda guitar that is badass I’d have to pay import costs and it would be way more expensive than say a Kiesel or Suhr guitar and they both play and feel amazing, better than the mass built imports that are around the same price
@@tomspallone1868 i agree, some poeple like gibson sg better but i personally liked the tone of the epi a little better when i tried both yesterday. epi has more output from what i could tell but gib had a little more bass i think, but not really that much so id gladly take the epi tbh. gibson for the name epi elsewise for me
If its bothering you...why not change the strap position? Thst might gove you more comfort...im 6 feet and used to bass which are longer...but if i plat guitar 2 weeks and not touch a bass i feel what you mean!
The weight imbalance isn't peculiar to inexpensive guitars, believe me. Ever tried playing a Gibson Flying V? I've owned several and, although they look cool as hell, the neck dive is crazy, as is the feedback (I always filled the pickup switch and volume/tone cavities with foam rubber or something of the sort). And did you ever sit down and try to play one of these things while working on a tune? See how long it will sit in your lap.
232Jeffer I've owned and played literally hundreds of guitars. I picked up a brand new Samick Greg Bennet Torino for $300.00 several years ago and, for the money, you can't beat it. I also own a Gibson SG, among many other guitars, but I keep my Samick Greg Bennet out at all times, along with my Roland Micro Cube, for easy access when inspiration strikes. It's a great guitar with great tone, and great playability. You can't go wrong.
232Jeffer Oh yeah. I also own an Epiphone SG Special with Killpot, an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Prophecy, and an Epiphone Genesis Ltd. Edition PRO. Just trying to make the point that Epiphone makes some pretty damn good guitars. In fact, I taught myself how to play guitar on an Epiphone acoustic I picked up at a Jacksonville, FL pawnshop for $125.00 back in 1973. If people weren't so brand name conscious, they'd find there are some outstanding deals to be had out there.
Heck with the Gibson name, Epiphone came first and will always be Number One. Stupid Les Pauls are Heavy, off balance, the bodies are excessively thick, and only a fool would pay for a gibson at full price
adam heeley the body is way too thin to really consider a side mount. So it’s thin body is actually the double edge sword, probably also why the neck wants to dive.
There a shorter scale length then most electric guitars already actually, the issue is the scale length starts pretty far up on the guitar compared to other guitars.
+Michał Jóźwiak The main difference is that the Pro version has coil taps on the pick-ups (activated by pulling up the volume pots), which creates a more cutting, "strat-like" sound and adds to the range of tones that the guitar can create.
do some jam sessions with ur dad and brothers. also in one of your videos you said you were gonna review one of your dads guitars. I forget the name, but you never did do the review.
SG neck dive? the FIRST thing to do is to take weight out of the headstock end. plastic button Klusons are half the weight of all steel tuners and because they are furthest from the fulcrum (front strap button) it has the greatest affect (principle of moments)
The guitar sounds fantastic. The playing on the other hand... Whats wrong with this guy? Its like he wants to play the start, the middle AND the end all at once! Calm down short arms. Just calm the f**k down. Me thinks cocaine may be involved...
I bought one brand new for $200 at guitar center. Loved it! One day I took it over for a jam session with my friend who has a local band with a song on the local rock station. They were cracking on my cheap ass guitar! I felt like the poor kid in school eating a bologna sammich while all the other kids had pizza! Lol.
i bought the sg 400 and a gibson sg...the 400 is way more tonal than the Gibson....the fret ends on the gibson felt sharp where the 400s were polished smooth....the control plate on the back fit perfect on the 400 on the Gibson it was sloppy....go figure
les didn't like the LP Paul either the closest one he like was the Les Paul recording model with low impedance pickups and even then he butchered them with holes and switches with atrocious workmanship! go figure lol
No binding on neck and ugly headstock also those horns aint deep enough =no thanks,,i have three harley benton S580 exactly copies of sg61 oohh and all three for the price of 1 epiphone "sg"
Best trick on balance is a leather strap with a rough inside. The friction on your shoulder is enough to stop the neck-dive.
actually its to do like Iommi and relocate the strap button to the top horn tip. works great.
Thats what i do. Thick rough leather strap. I have a Warlock and all my shirts are worn out in the left shoulder lol.
All SGs, whether Gibson or Epiphone, should come with an Australian school uniform.
No they should come with bell bottoms, a porn stache, and weed...lots of it!
All killers ideas gents 😂😂😂😂
Hehehehehehehe!
“ . . . done dirt cheap!”
Or a big ass mustache and long black hair
As for neck dive just get a thick leather strap with a raw inner surface much like bass players use. Eliminates neck dive right fast. Also putting a heavy trim like a bigsby on it helps.
if the reach is too long try sitting with the guitar properly
nigel lacey exactly
Found one at a pawn shop and paid just over $100...Absolutely great sound and feel. I taped a weight to the strap to counter the neck dive. I play it lower to counter the fatigue from stretching your arm. Also had to level a couple of frets. I was going to install new electronics but it's almost pointless since it sounds so good. I have an SG-Special. I had never noticed the problem of it being heavy at the headstock.
sg special is a shit version
Nathan Sciarone I know it is a beginner guitar. I'm a beginner. What is a better guitar for a beginner if not the sg special? Thanks
anything but the special
!
I played a 90 dollar rip off strat it sucked then I got the SG Special now I am going for the g400
Prefer the older epi sg special actually, no neck dive as it's a bolt on, to each his own though, each person has their own preference, nice guitar !

I bought the 1966 reissue of the episode sg g-400 pro and 1 love what It can do for the money
Note about hard gibson cases: There is an aluminum band that goes around the entire top of the case when it is open. If you bang your guitar on that metal band it will leave an indentation on your guitar. I stopped using my Gibson case for that reason.
My Epiphone SG will do for now until I get a Gibson one day.
Admar best comment 👍🏻🤘🏻
Personally, with the way Gibson have quality control issues, I would stick with the Epiphone.
I agree , bought a Gibson and was pretty disappointed, feel like my epi was a better buy unfortunately.

Beautiful guitars dude and sweet mech mod,Manhattan clone? just got the ipv v1 35 watt box mod w an igo w 5 vaping 1.5 ohm coil
I'd love to get a plume veil, they are killer and easy to build
Seems like a great deck to work with.. hah, now just to get one with terminals that work! :) If you think of it, bug me in a few weeks when I get the replacement and have had some time to knock around with it.. I'll let you know what I think :) Ty..
ok cool
Nice review! I bought this guitar as my first guitar back in October, and started learning, however I can't play while standing, do you have any tips regarding playing while standing other than trying to balance it with my hand? A reply is much appreciated :D
***** I can't really say anything since I've only been playing for 5 months and it's my 1st guitar however I think it's great if you don't know exactly what genre you will be playing ! you can play almost everything from folk music to heavy metal :P
I would recommend playing with it as high up as you can, within a comfortable zone of course. Anyways hope all the learning has been fun.
I don't think you understand what "generic" means. Epiphones are not generic Gibsons.
B.J. Funk people like to use the term lower end. these are not made n the USA which I'm guessing affects the quality somehow?
@@tomspallone1868 i agree, some poeple like gibson sg better but i personally liked the tone of the epi a little better when i tried both yesterday. epi has more output from what i could tell but gib had a little more bass i think, but not really that much so id gladly take the epi tbh. gibson for the name epi elsewise for me
what do you think of the gibson SGJ? is it also that top heavy?
Do you prefer the Satin Finish over the Gloss finish on the Neck and Body? Do you like the Epiphone G400 as well as the Epi SG? Thumbs UP!
Thanks this was helpful as o am considering getting one.
And the one your demoing isn't the Epiphone G 400 Sg Pro..
+Dogheadj flying v,best guitar in the world to play sitting down.you put the v over your leg and its absolutely perfect and ergonomic
whats your opinion about greg bennet torino series? is the tr-1 or the tr-2 better than this epiphone?
Dogheadj thanks a lot, i decided to buy a gregg bennett um3, its awesome, great tone. easy to play, relly prs like im really happy with my guitar
That's a nice Heritage H-150 sitting there!
Heck with the Gibson name, Epiphone came first and will always be Number One. Stupid Les Pauls are Heavy, off balance, the bodies are excessively thick, and only a fool would pay for a gibson at full price
I love the SG but I HATE that the cord jack is on the front. Why Gibson. WHY!!!
adam heeley the body is way too thin to really consider a side mount. So it’s thin body is actually the double edge sword, probably also why the neck wants to dive.
Using an angled input like he's using helps.
Sgs are really neck heavy. A good way to fix that is to clip the strap to your belt if you have one.
you have ah cool attack on them wires mang
4:16 song please ? Sounds like skreamo.
Warcrafter3000 "Screamo"...you're obviously twelve or just don't know a thing or two about genres....
the tone is like honey.
It’s worn cherry or red cherry?
nice demo
Should i save the money and get an Epiphone SG or get a Mexican Strat
Strat
How's that sigeilli
Awesome guitar player!
Dude it sounds like what you need is a shorter scale neck SG and you'll be in business.
Shorter scale ? They're already short 24.75 inch, a strat is 25.5.
There a shorter scale length then most electric guitars already actually, the issue is the scale length starts pretty far up on the guitar compared to other guitars.
Guys would You recommend me this guitar? Also is the PRO version better?
Pro version has very little difference. Not worth the extra $50 imo
+Michał Jóźwiak The main difference is that the Pro version has coil taps on the pick-ups (activated by pulling up the volume pots), which creates a more cutting, "strat-like" sound and adds to the range of tones that the guitar can create.
What's the price of this
do some jam sessions with ur dad and brothers. also in one of your videos you said you were gonna review one of your dads guitars. I forget the name, but you never did do the review.
I have one! Same thing
SG neck dive? the FIRST thing to do is to take weight out of the headstock end. plastic button Klusons are half the weight of all steel tuners and because they are furthest from the fulcrum (front strap button) it has the greatest affect (principle of moments)
Les Paul didn't design the Les Paul just added the name
The guitar sounds fantastic.
The playing on the other hand...
Whats wrong with this guy? Its like he wants to play the start, the middle AND the end all at once! Calm down short arms. Just calm the f**k down. Me thinks cocaine may be involved...
Epiphone all day long over Gibson..learn the history between Les Paul and Epiphone..
Excellent review and playing...good job !!
Excelente
The G400 Pro ..
I have one
You are a giant compared to angus young.
Is this sponsored by 5 Hour Energy? lol...what the heck did i just witness at 7:41???
sg special
I bought one brand new for $200 at guitar center. Loved it! One day I took it over for a jam session with my friend who has a local band with a song on the local rock station. They were cracking on my cheap ass guitar! I felt like the poor kid in school eating a bologna sammich while all the other kids had pizza! Lol.
Bp FourLife Then they are fucking wankers then...
Great review.
copy in GIBSON SG 6th Gen.
i bought the sg 400 and a gibson sg...the 400 is way more tonal than the Gibson....the fret ends on the gibson felt sharp where the 400s were polished smooth....the control plate on the back fit perfect on the 400 on the Gibson it was sloppy....go figure
les didn't like the LP Paul either the closest one he like was the Les Paul recording model with low impedance pickups and even then he butchered them with holes and switches with atrocious workmanship! go figure lol
🕸
STOP PLAYING PLEASE STOP
What a din....
They go out of adjustment all the time.
jajajaja guitar "play" xD
ужс
well that re confirms why i hate metal
