I’m surprised this Epi doesn’t have the circuit board set up, that certainly is nice to go along with the upgraded pickups. I own 3 SG’s currently and they’re all Gibson, a Standard, a P90 Special and also a limited Sam Ash run Standard which came in white as well. My Gibson came with the dreaded circuit board which I gutted and installed an Emerson harness along with a set of very nice PAF style pickups. My point is this, by the time I finished upgrading my Gibson I was probably in the low two thousand dollar area, meanwhile this Epi you just reviewed is 899 ahah! I love Gibson guitars even though this is sort of a kick in the nuts here LOL! Cool review man 🤙
From what I’ve gathered, the Epiphones without two Epiphone humbuckers don’t have circuit boards. That is especially the case in the ‘61 SG and ‘59 LP, because the Gibson pickups they use are the cheaper ones that can’t ever be coil split, thus Epi can’t use the connectors with them. The connectors are mostly why so many new Epiphones have cool coil tapping and phase switching features (even if the pots are shit). My Adam Jones doesn’t coil split or anything like that, but it’s not wired with connectors because it has a Duncan in the bridge.
I just bought a lawsuit ers 1970s Tokai LP, with Cheapo Factory pickups. When I plug it in by my actual Gibson Les Paul classic side-by-side? When you put that neck pickup on they both have that same throaty sound and you can barely tell them apart. Everybody says that has nothing to do with the wood or anything like that it's the electronic but I truly believe that with the Les Paul there's something about the build of that guitar that causes it to sound the way it does whether it's a cheaper brand or a real Gibson the build and shape of that style of guitar makes it have that "abrasive","throaty" sound . If you were in my jam room I'll bet you have a hard time telling apart which one I paid 400 bucks for and which one cost me $1,000
By the way... the reason it is not glossy is that the actual name is Aged Classic White, while the cherry is called Aged Sixties Cherry. I'd have already picked one up but here in Canada, they sell for $1299, and if I pay that much for an Epi, it will be made in Japan.
@@gregrose6915 Which is insane for an Epi. Like I said, I used to own a couple of Elitists and if I was going to pay over $1000 for an Epi, I will simply buy another Elitist. I will always regret selling the two I had.
@@vladimirpoutine7522 Cheapest Gibson SG in Canada is $1799 for an SG Tribute - Vintage Cherry Satin, really overpriced for what it is. I considered an Epi SG Special P90 at $629, but it has that hideous stripped veneer on the body and I just can't get past that.

I have this model in the aged cherry, and I actually wonder if you’d have been happier with that instead. I personally like the satin finishes like this better than the gloss for the play/hand feel, and the cherry just visually pops in a way that the white ones don’t. To me, anyway.
Just got this very guitar in the cherry finish. I love it. But I will tell you that the case doesn't protect as much as you'd think as it arrived with the treble pickup volume and tone knobs destroyed. One completely destroyed and the other still on but the pot metal post poking through the knob. Everything else was fine but this was a little bit of a let down to say the least. But, I can't blame Epiphone or Sweetwater (whom I purchased this guitar from) as the damage was most likely due to a compression of the box/case during shipping. All else works perfectly and I commend Epiphone for this wonderful guitar. I love it!
This is a very very cool guitar. Awesome specs at a reasonable price. The thing holding me back is the neck carve which is a bit slim for my baseball-bat-loving-hands... but it might be a compromise worth making. Nice.
Awesome review and playing. I love this guitar, but one common trait from other reviews and is so noticeable here when you compare it to the other SG is the top horn of the '61 is not sharp but more rounded. That seems strange for a SG body.
The more rounded top horn is probably due to the fact, that Epiphone uses this geometry for the Tony Iommi version, too, which needs more beef here to accommodate the strap pin bolt.
The white one reminds me of Les Paul's wife Mary Fords SG that was the same colour if memory serves me right, also made me think of the Grandmother of Rock and Roll Sister Rosetta Tharpe
I got a '61 Gibson SG Standard in the Pelham blue. I would have killed for it in white, but GIbson only wants to issue gibsons in the custom with three pickups.. way too much $$ as well. What's the deal with that!?

This particular Epi is a bit of a sleeper IMO. Honestly, this is a great value just by itself. However, if you’re like me and enjoy making good guitars great, then buff/polish the body to a nice shine because the finish felt a bit cheap to me (the “collab w/Gibson CS is marketing BS) but to each his own…This gives you a nice shiny alpine white while leaving the back of the neck nice and satiny smooth. i was really excited about this model but picking it up and playing it, just felt cheap and too light. didn’t come close to my sg standard. had similar feelings with the prophecy les paul, the finish and hardware just felt super plasticky and cheap. for some reason the 50’s standard les paul, and sg custom from epiphone felt the closest to their gibson counter parts after playing them back to back. i do love epiphones, i’ve just been disappointed by the “premium” models as of late.

I was ready to either sell it or keep it as a wall ornament before that. So with the BBs in that SG, it's a great deal (assuming no high frets). Curious how many other Epis have similar issues as mine though.
i bought the 59' epi les paul that has the same pickups as this SG, it had about 6 frets thats were to high, the action on it was unplayable but after a level and polish it plays really well, if i bought this one i'd probably get it from sweetwater and pay for it to be plekd but then your breaking into Gibson price which are all plekd from factory and it makes it kind of pointless

What a great video full of information on a great company that just keeps getting better with time!! Epiphone's release of this SG truly demonstrates the direction they are headed!
Who cares where the building sits it's inside the building that counts and the building and property isn't owned by the Chinese it's American owned 100%
Great video, thanks! I can get a used SG Standard '61. Is there a way to know if the models from this year also bring this nice burbbucker pickups?? thanks!!
No the standard 61 has the Epiphone buckers. The Epi 61 Les Paul SG has the Gibson ones. It's a much better guitar. The 61 standard has ugly veneer too.
So close. Not sure why if they were going to use Gibson USA pickups, they wouldn't use '61's. Kind of a miss in my opinion, and if there were 61's in that guitar, I would have gotten one. Still holding out for the Gibson 61 SG.
Get use to Epiphone costing over $1,000 in March a 22 to 28% price increase and rightfully so..the epiphone custom Koa Les Paul is already selling up to $1,300 on Ebay and the Epiphone modern figured Sgs and Les Paul's up to and over $1,000 we all knew this was coming Epiphone has been hinting for 3 years and these new prices will be the correct prices..some of these models at the end of 2023 will be well over the $1,000 mark
I've got 4 SG's 3 Epiphone's and a Gibson Standard Pelham Blue. I have a P-90 Classic and a G-400 Pro in White and Sg Custom in Ebony. I like my Gibson but like you had mentioned the necks are a lot different on certain models. My G-400 Pro has a very slim neck and I like that better than the wider neck on the other ones aside from the classic P-90 even having rather big hands. I love the collaboration between Gibson Custom shop and Epiphone to make the Epiphones closer to their big brother Gibson. I also have 4 LP's all Epiphones because I can't even come close to afford a new Gibson that I want. I got the 59' LP standard Dark Burst with the Gibson and Switchcraft parts I love it almost more than any of the other ones I have. I have a LP custom Pro in Ebony I like but it's not close to the Gibson counter part , it was made in Korea and some say that the Korean ones are better than the Chinese made ones from Quindago China but I beg to differ because the inspired by Gibson line is a LOT nicer than the former ones. I'm not a huge fan of the satin finish I am more of a gloss guy but a little rubbing and it will be gloss, you just have to be sure to not miss any spot's. Already having 4 SG's and a Gibson one I don't think I am going to drop the hammer the slimmer neck is enticing but with money being tight I have to pass. The one thing I like better with the Gibson is the body is thinner than the Epiphones.
I couldn't not comment. They may have been Epis best SG. If they would've paid more attention to quality. I returned 2 before giving up and buying something else. BAD QC issues on both. Ended up with a Schecter Van Nuys Strat. Same price, twice the quality. Super disappointed with Epiphone. Just one man's opinion.
I just bought this same guitar from a pawn shop for $350 plus tax , making it like $379 , and I bought the limited edition Les Paul from the same pawn shop about three months ago for $600 , now I just need three more Epiphone guitars to make my collection complete for me. I want an Explorer and a Flying V that is coming out this year , both are Korina although I think they are gonna be a little more expensive but still not as expensive as a Gibson. Beautiful function and sound, but it seems to be like all the others. Flighty fingers work for some, but if you dig in and play hard, guitars don't last anymore. Trust me, I have played them all. Who cares where the building sits it's inside the building that counts and the building and property isn't owned by the Chinese it's American owned 100%
*This seems to be the best for the money. 🏆🎥🎶🎵 Can’t beat it!*
nice....P-90's are missing
I'd rather have the 499 dollars one over the 800 one. Buy im not gonna be Griffen every where either.
Hey Rocky! Watch me pull a Rabbit out of my hat!
how do you like this sg i have an eiphone sg custom in black with gold hardware
Awesome playing
Great video, thanks! I can get a used SG Standard '61. Is there a way to know if the models from this year also bring this nice burbbucker pickups?? thanks!!
They should be the same.
No the standard 61 has the Epiphone buckers. The Epi 61 Les Paul SG has the Gibson ones. It's a much better guitar. The 61 standard has ugly veneer too.
@@sandlmv8301 I just checkef and my epi standard 61 has burst buckers
So close. Not sure why if they were going to use Gibson USA pickups, they wouldn't use '61's. Kind of a miss in my opinion, and if there were 61's in that guitar, I would have gotten one. Still holding out for the Gibson 61 SG.
Those burst buckers are better than the 61s in my sg 61. Not a miss. A massive hit.
@@aliengrey6052 I have burst buckers in my SG modern. They're amazing pups, I agree. I'm looking for a more vintage (AC/DC) vibe.
years back, i got an epiphone sg from a pawn shop. i paid 75$ money well spent
Btw can you do a review on the lespaul that you are giveawaying
Get use to Epiphone costing over $1,000 in March a 22 to 28% price increase and rightfully so..the epiphone custom Koa Les Paul is already selling up to $1,300 on Ebay and the Epiphone modern figured Sgs and Les Paul's up to and over $1,000 we all knew this was coming Epiphone has been hinting for 3 years and these new prices will be the correct prices..some of these models at the end of 2023 will be well over the $1,000 mark
Full clean sound 👍🏻
It’s a beauty! Why buy a Gibson? I have the epi double neck in that color.
love to buy one, when they stop making them in China, i will. Indonesia? Korea? ANYWHERE BUT FREAKING CHINA BRO!
Why? The factory that builds epiphone and kramer is soley owned by Gibson.
I wish it came with golden hardware.
Wish Epi made the melodymaker inspired by Gibson
I got one and it is phenomenal
Now, that is a solo!!!
Um, is it too late for me to win the green guitar? ; )
Lucky 13th Like! Dude, you had me at SG!
I love your channel!! Great knowledge and info. Could y’all do some amp reviews?
Is the top horn not as sharp as the bottom?
They're asymmetrical. Once you see it, you can't ever unsee it.
All Epiphone is missing is a 1957 P90 version !!
Maybe you should look at the Epiphone modern figured Sgs and Epiphone Customs and prophecy Models before any of you say anything else
I prefefer a Gibson SG Special or SG Tribute, not a poor chinese copy ... LOL !
Yeippi we are almost going to hit 50k subs ❤️
I hope that I will get that lespaul ❤️
Cool !!!
Anyone on east coast Canada want to trade a Gibson SG Std Ebony for a Jr or Special?
I just bought this same guitar from a pawn shop for $350 plus tax , making it like $379 , and I bought the limited edition Les Paul from the same pawn shop about three months ago for $600 , now I just need three more Epiphone guitars to make my collection complete for me. I want an Explorer and a Flying V that is coming out this year , both are Korina although I think they are gonna be a little more expensive but still not as expensive as a Gibson. The other one is an Ace Frehley Les Paul , but that one’s getting hard to find and too expensive. But who knows , I may find one one of these days.
👍👍👍✌️✌️✌️
Thousand dollars after taxes, you better be getting a nice friggin case. Humbuckers are nice too. Nice job underpaid Chinese workers! Thank you! 🙏
Get use to it because in March Epiphones are going up by 22 and 28%
@@mr.astrophysics9115 it’s ok man. Chinese labor is going up just like everything else. I’m good on new Epiphones though. Just rediscovered my 1993 Korean Epiphone LP Standard at mom’s house like 2 weeks ago and I’m happy af. It’s 30 years old. Mom got it for me new around Easter in 1994. The Koreans at the Samick factory were paid pretty well also.
@@Factory_Muff you a state of the Art Qingdao Epiphone facility that's owned by Epiphone and Gibson not the Chinese the building and ground are designated American property..you must also mean American Master luthier and facility manager Scott Lewis and the American builders who are also there along with Asian..so please enlighten me with how you came up with your nonsense reply
@@Factory_Muff and Korea made Epiphones aren't touched by any American luthiers but they are at Qingdao..
Hello
Bought one from Guitar Center. Called to tell them that the fret composite sucks. I'm talking to the guy, and I could tell he didn't care about anything I was saying. No after sale concern, lt was like talking to an empty phone. Stay away from Guitar Center, and if you buy an Epiphone, get ready for a fret job.
play before you huy
I played 3 at sam ash before I found a great one
Here I go again. Sorry folks, but I have to ask, why can't guitars take the punishment they used to? I have this exact guitar, but I know it will need work soon. Beautiful function and sound, but it seems to be like all the others. Flighty fingers work for some, but if you dig in and play hard, guitars don't last anymore. Trust me, I have played them all. The strap breaks, it falls at your feet. Even if you take a chair, will it still play? They're too fragile now. You have to be in control. Grab that neck like you're going to break it.
Epiphone has been just a second away from good sound, tuning stab and and all that jazz. But is has been like that for 30 years. So no. Not 4 me. Thx anyway.
I have the 59' Les Paul from Ephiphone and its tuning stability is the best I've ever seen!
Great sounding guitar, but the frets are shit. Play hard, and they'll flat in no time
Dude... it's a 21 fret guitar. Not 22, like you state multiple times.
Can’t get over that ugly rounded top horn man…. For that alone I’m not getting that guitar
