  • (Another UK report from the 20th & some tributes the next morning) as the Canadian actor Donald Sutherland, star of films including The Hunger Games and Don't Look Now, has died at 88 after a long illness, in the USA (17th July 1935, Saint John, Canada - 20th June 2024). His 89th birthday would have been next month.
His son, the actor Kiefer Sutherland, said: "With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film.
"Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived."
Sutherland had almost 200 credits to his name in a career spanning more than half a century.
The news was met with an outpouring of support and tributes.
Cary Elwes, a co-star in the 2001 television film Uprising, said he was "devastated" by Sutherland's death.
"Our hearts are breaking for you," he told Kiefer in an Instagram message. "So grateful to have known [and] worked with him. Sending our love.

    My thoughts:
Always good to see him and his presence in television and films over the many decades and is known to audiences young and old at this time. My favourite role his, as 'Oddball' in Kelly's Heroes (1970) (Adventure/War/Comedy). I call Oddball the oldest hippy on Earth, as he was probably 20 years ahead of his time (by date in the film). Oddball: "Always with the negative waves", but Donald the actor, never in performance.
Things I have seen him in, (films & TV), M*A*S*H, Kelly's Heroes, Dirty, Sexy, Money, The Eagle has Landed, Hunger Games, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (remake), The Dirty Dozen, Klute, Space Cowboys, Eye of the Needle, Lock up and more besides. (Five war films mentioned here, four based during WWII).
Like good movies I have lost count how many times I have seen Kelly's Heroes, maybe 30 or 35 times, at least. Last time I watched it was some 1 - 2 years ago I recall. I did watch again and played more close attention to Oddball and couldn't stop laughing. I saw The Eagle has Landed about a year ago. (I watched this and The Dirty Dozen by the next night). Thanks for all the films, performances elsewhere, and laughs, Donald. RIP.
