How to season a camp oven - Seasoning your cast iron cookware
Have you just purchased a new camp oven but are sure how to season it correctly or want to bring some life back into an old camp oven? Stick around because I am about to show you how to season a cast iron camp oven correctly.
Campfire Australia:
www.campfirecook.com/
There is nothing more enjoyable then cooking on an open fire with a good quality cast iron camp oven. The meal you can create are unique and if done right absolutely delicious. However, there is a lot of mystery around how to season your camp oven correctly.
I have just received this new 9 quart camp oven from Campfire Australia which has been pre seasoned but I am going to season it today to show you how it is done.
Why season your camp oven?
Seasoning your camp oven is very important to do before you start cooking anything. Why is this?
It prepares the surface of the camp oven for cooking, creating a non stick layer on the metal. It also prevents the camp oven from rusting.
How to season your camp oven
You can either season your camp oven in an oven or a bbq at home of in a fire while you are camping like I am doing today.
Heat the camp oven in the fire. This ensures that any moisture is removed and expands the metal which will allow the oil to penetrate easily.
Lightly coat the camp oven in olive oil using a piece of paper towel. Make sure it is a thin layer and there is no pooling.
Return the camp oven to the fire placing it upside down to that the oil wont pool.
The camp oven will start smoking as the oil burns off. Let it heat for about 30 minutes then remove. Allow the camp oven to cool a little the repeat the process.
Once you have finished take the camp oven off and give it a very light coating of oil, making sure there is no pooling.
Using a oil spray would be ideal if you have one available.

Also any help in regards What psi after experiencing it And how long does it take if you was just to push on to alicesprings in an no sightseeing stops. Cheers any information would be appreciated
is that at watsonville
I bought a "Gabriel Gatè" camp oven for $10 at the op-shop. No idea if it's a quality one or not but it's fairly well used. I knew it had to be seasoned but wasn't exactly sure how. I already knew the most important part and that was to have the froffies ready to go. Thanks for the video.
I lived on the Dog Leg mine for some years and I drove my HQ station wagon to & from never had a problem with her except a lost muffler...The roads look sooo much better than when I drove it

Just a quick correction, Mrs Parsons left Maytown with her family in July of 1945, she was the last ever post master/mistress in Maytown. The building remained until it was removed and relacated to a station not far from Maytown in the early 1960's.
Hi, Just wondering if you could tell me the name of the bridge/crossing at mark 7:47 please.
That is Emu Creek bridge
You guys missed the best part. The old bottle house down on the creek!
I believe a pair of Irish brothers stayed there, it's pretty cool to see.
Gregory falls is where they sprayed agent orange, then the water goes down to Innisfail area and it’s said that’s why ppl in Innisfail have the highest rates of cancer in Oz.
There was a lot of military training out that direction, particularly during ww2
That’s where they sprayed agent orange.
That‘s a nice one! Could you please share GPS coordinates (e.g., gorge entrance)? Neither Google Maps, nor Exploroz show Emu Creek Gorge.
Awesome video, pity about the grubs shitting everywhere. But man that music does my head in lol
FYI….. you need a Land cruiser to even attempt the old coach road
🤣
No I lived there and my vehicle was an old HQ station wagon
cheers mate, good info 👍
Thanks for watching mate
Fantastic video. .thanks for that
Haven’t been here in years, do you have to go through private property? Never driven only rode in. Also did a walk as a kid in the scouts right through to collins weir. There is a track to there not sure on the state of it
It is private property both ends now days and unless your know the people is hard to get in
Great spot been there many times over the years, drys up by July lots of abandoned mines in the area also
There certainly is, it's a great place to explore.
Great video mate :) Glad noone was hurt :) Number plate looked like it'd been hit by a shotgun!! Cheers :)
It certainly made a mess of it mate, thanks for watching.
Great vid! Did you find mowbray falls in the end?
Yes we did! Watch the next video to find out all about it.
@@OutbackTouringAustralia Ah nice one! I will check these out sometime, Ive explored abit around that area, but more Jumna dam area. Cheers!
Glad you didn’t use to much drone content, eye level viewing is still a must, so many others are full on drone coverage, forgetting actual ground level exploration.
I think a mixture of both is important, it's just finding a balance mate.
Sorry, to much drone footage for me, I like eye level scenery as well, and camp areas.
It's not for everyone mate but it gives a bit of a different perspective doesn't it.
dave please include this when you make the effort and do your video
Hey mate never heard of this group how do we join? Me and my brother both have pretty heavily modified hj60 LandCruisers but don't know any tracks up here.
Search fnq4wd in facebook
Snatch straps and ropes have a number of pulls they can perform continuously until they loose their elasticity and then the next pull they break . After 5 to 8 pulls the rope or strap should be washed and rested for 24 hours to regain stretch . Ropes are more prone to pick up mud and grit inside the rope weave and that grit can make the rope break quicker . Snatching on an angle puts way more strain on the rope or strap and recovery points . Once the bogged vehicle has dug it's wheels in the force required to pull it out is greatly increased . Snatching alone without any other preparations is one of the worst most dangerous ways to recover a vehicle . You had a high lift jack and should have used it to lift the wheels up out of the bog and put stuff under the wheels . Dig a bit of dirt away , line up the snatch straighter and it would have snatched out easier and possibly without tearing off the recovery point . Just because someone has a snatch rope does not mean automatically that they know how to use it safely . Snatching on the bend in the track was always going to be more difficult so extra work needed to be done .
Sounds like you have a bit of knowledge mate, we would love to get you on to share some of your knowledge. Send me a dm on fb or insta so we can have a chat about it.
Love exploring our country
Do you have contact details for Emuford Station. I have not been able to find any? Cheers
Very helpful, thank you!
You are most welcome
Awesome to see more local content mate 👌
Cheers mate
Nice... Cheers!
So what happened with the 1KD-FTV Hilux 3.0L motor. Turbo? Cracked piston? Can’t believe you left us hanging:))
🤣 sorry mate, yes cracked piston.
Bugger! Love my N70 with 180K on the clock now that it’s all set up and has a tune/ turbo/ exhaust for towing our caravan. Will keep it for years so may be in the same position one day. Watched a few utube “engine care” videos. They rebuild Hilux motors with different pistons, 4.5K change over. Will do more research as I’m sure a genuine set of Toyota pistons would be hard to beat but he seems to know what he’s talking about. Hopefully you got yours sorted and running sweet now. Enjoyed the video. Thanks.
My advice is not to tow anything to heavy and not for long periods. I was told that the three biggest factors for cracking a poison was a tune, Touring and long distance driving. If that is the case it kind of makes them a bit obsolete as a touring vehicle.
The N80 has another 100Nm standard. The N70 was a bit de-tuned from the factory but I agree with you. My van is 1850kgs and the tune is 380Nm with safe AFR’s so pretty conservative. I don’t push it hard and drive for economy so hopefully it stays together 🤞
@@OutbackTouringAustralia How many K had your Hilux done when you had the engine trouble. Did you rebuild it
Do you know why the recovery point ripped out? I'm very curious as I have the same setup on a 100series ifs. Muchas gracias loco.
It wasn't a rated recovery point and the 105 series was well and truly stuck.
Looks like it's the tie down point 😂 no wonder it broke off
@@OutbackTouringAustralia The recovery point was still in one piece, it was the bolts that failed. Were they high tensile bolts - 8.8 or 10.9 ? It would be stamped on the hex head.
Nothing better than bunyip rump stew in the camp oven.
Very good tutorial. When I season a new oven the first meal I cook is one for the dogs, boiled up meat off cuts etc just in case there's still some of that new manufacturing taste left.
That's a good idea mate, thank you for the kind words.
Hey mate . Being told told I drive from pt Douglas up to lion den pub is hard going . Wondering how bad the dirt is .
Hi mate, if you have any 4wd experience it is not hard at all. You could almost do it in a 2wd vehicle if it wasn't for the creek crossings which are only deep in the wet season. Sorry about the late reply.
@@OutbackTouringAustralia Do you need a snorkel for the river crossings in dry season? Just wondering if I should fit one before I go next week.
@@tccscott86 depends on your car mate. Being the dry season you should be right but i would check the depths of the crossings before you proceed.
Shit yeah 👍👍
🤙
Well captured mate. I am a subscriber so can't believe I haven't seen this. Doing a trip from Melbourne to Lambert's Centre in a month so appreciate your tips including the info on the road conditions. Shame about the tow.
Cheers legend, glad you enjoyed it. Yeah it was unfortunate and there was a few lessons learnt but all is well that ends well mate.
Good to hear Aussie voices on UA-cam 😀
Cheers legend.
Thanks for putting this up. Glad everyone is OK. I'm a beginner just watching as many situations as I can, to learn from other's experiences. Can I ask was it a snatch strap that you were using or a tow rope/winch extension strap?
We were using a Saber Offroad snatch rope. So it was made for that purpose. We should have had a dampener on it.
@@OutbackTouringAustralia thanks for the reply - I'll head over to your channel and have a look at your other vids.
Should of also Been using a proper recovery point. Not that POS
Nice job looking good thanks

Nice show thanks
No worries mate, glad you enjoyed it.
Haw long does it take to get to emu Creek gorge from athaten qld
About 4 hours
A FROZEN portable fridge will make your outdoor life better
I bet it would.
I'm shopping for a camp oven and so glad I came across your video, I wasn't even aware you had to season them so thanks very much for the great, easy to follow video lesson.
Thank you so much for the feedback. I am glad I was able to help someone. When you season it out is best to use rice bran oil or peanut oil an it has a higher flash point. I didn't mention that in my video.
Hey mate, love the vid. Thanks for the upload👍 Looking to do a similar trip in July. Just curious what year the luxy was and what kind of fuel economy do you get towing that camper and at what speed on average? Thanks again
No worries mate, glad you liked it. The hilux is a 2012 and I wasgetting around 15L/100km. I took 3 20L jerry cans with me and tried to buy bulk fuel where it was cheapest.
And I sat at about 80-90kph on most parts but the Strzelecki was in great condition when I went through.
Thanks very much for the reply. Good to know👍
Any time mate
@@OutbackTouringAustralia Hey mate, did you guys need a desert pass to do this track ?
Great video mate!!! Ive always had trouble keeping my spun steel camp oven seasoned. I might have to try doing it over the fire instead of in the oven! 👍
Give it a crack mate, if you do it in the oven, do it for at least an hour at 200 degrees. I have recently been informed that peanut oil or rice bran oil are better for seasoning due to the higher flash point which makes sense.
Great video mate. Love the edit
Thank you so much mate.
I reckon that's a 6 beer job, lol
Easy a six pack job mate, you cant rush perfection
Funny this just came up as I’m scrubbing the rust out of mine for a camping trip tomorrow! Was gonna search a video up! Cheers
