    Hopefully, later on this channel, I will have the opportunity to talk in detail about this film, and at such time, I hope to discuss where possible the different versions. In the meantime, please enjoy this video.

    Hello Daisuke. Thanks so much for this video and mentioning my channel. I am loving my exploration of Tarkovsky. I feel so connected to his films which I’m sure I will be studying and watching for years to come. I have been considering what to watch next after watching Stalker, Solaris, and The Mirror and, based on your video, Andrei Rublev is now next on my list. I so appreciate your expert opinion on Tarkovsky’s work. As with Ingmar Bergman, I feel a sense of readiness for my study of Tarkovsky with the idea that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. Sometimes films find us as viewers and I feel that strongly with Tarkovsky at this point in my life. Thank you again my good friend and I hope that you and your family are safe and well.

    the bell... such a glorious section. stalker is my favourite so far (working through a box-set) SO DAMN BEAUTIFUL and stunning in every sense of the word. i saw this as the artist (rublev) creating a vision...but the artwork IS Russia. In the same way that Tarkovsky is making a filmic vision of what Russia is. The events, the struggles, the development. besieged by the forces of religion, greed, necessity, power, ideologies industry and waves of renewal. his work is very genuinely beyond words.

    I also think it might be interesting to mention that in Suzdal, Russia (which is where many scenes of “Andrei Rublev” was filmed) there is a monument dedicated to Andrei Tarkovsky and the film “Andrei Rublev”. I just thought it would be an interesting fact for anyone who did not know about it.

    I have a question for you Daisuke, or maybe some of your channel viewers might know. Tarkovsky is such a brilliant filmmaker, do you know anything about any possible censorship from the USSR/Soviet government on Tarkovsky's cinema?
    I have enjoyed watching the 7 Tarkovsky films that I know of, and think all of them are immensely beautiful and thoughtful. I was wondering if he faced any censorship in the same way that directors in the USA such as Alfred Hitchcock had to face, due to the Hays Code.
    Does the Criterion Collection have any essays or knowledge about any limitations that this wonderful director might have faced when he worked on his films?
    Thank you!

    • @turncoatproductions8758
      @turncoatproductions8758 4 роки тому +3

      Jack Harrison Yes he did face censorship, with this film in fact. The Soviet censors did not like religion, political ambiguity, or anything seen as a threat to the state’s authority, and obviously this film had quite a bit of those condemned themes. So despite being made in the mid-1960s, Andrei Rublev was not released until the early 1970s, and probably had a chance to never be released at all (what a shame that would have been). That experience is partially what prompted Tarkovsky to start focusing his attention on making more science fiction themed cinema, although he of course never stopped imbuing his films with philosophical insights.

      @@turncoatproductions8758 Thank you so much for that information. • @markwarren1672
    @markwarren1672 4 роки тому

    Daisuke, your first 6 minutes of this video encapsulates many of the important elements of this film, in particular -- I'll let slide the Tarkovsky oeuvre...for now! From the opening 10 or so minutes of Andrei Rublev, where almost (again, only Tarkovsky can approach such...how to express it....totality, perhaps...) all of human history, Art, Russian experience of History is shown in purposefully, I think, anachronistic details of the hot air balloon, the various activities that take place around this central imagery -- I think of those "impossible" crane shots of the balloon and its riders on a similar scale/scope as one of Michelangelo's frescos of looming, large figures, including God, from the Sistine Chapel. Action takes place in foreground, middle ground, background...swirling, approaching, celebratory, menacing, the "invading" army approaching in the background.... There is too much to unpack in so little space and time (I bow to Tarkovsky and his book and themes here) and the entire movie proceeds from such a jaw-dropping, audacious opening.
    A longer discussion of "Andrei Rublev" would be most welcome. One of my frustrations with trying to understand/encompass/absorb this film is the relative paucity of first-hand and scholarly resources around both Rublev the man and his times but also a universe of possibilities packed into the film itself...about Rublev, about Us, about History, Faith, Art. I have the BFI screenplay, an attempt to get "closer" to the film and other sources Tarkovsky might have drawn-upon, but it is rather anemic in its size and scope. English (or other non-Russian-language) sources are few and very far between. Even the CC edition tempts and frustrates with an episodic commentary track that has survived both releases of the film, with nothing like the scope of opinions and scholarly disciplines that could (should?) be brought to bear on this amazing work. I would be interested to hear what you bring to this most amazing of the many films I have seen in my life.

    Hello again, Daisuke. Excellent video, as always. I had seen Solaris a few years ago and as I have begun collecting Criterion releases quite recently, I have been making my way through the rest of Tarkovsky's catalog. My question is about the supplemental features for this release. If you've seen them, or listened to any potential commentary, was there any new information shared regarding the scene with the horse falling down the stairs? I read that the horse was shot by Tarkovsky himself and that this horse was obtained from a slaughterhouse where he was to be killed the following day anyway. I'm just wondering if Tarkovsky ever expressed any regret over the scene? Thanks for reading if you've made it this far. Your insight is always welcome and appreciated!

    speak about Andrei Rublev is more closer to comprehend the art of Andrei Tarkovsky than the art of the painter. A "Biographic" movie highly invented where, like write Hoberma, in the 205 minutes of the original movie (The Passion according to Andrei) nobody lift up a brush. Rublev is about the life of an artist and the brutal context of that time period, the envy and the constant call (parhaps divine} to create, to express the faith between ruthlessness of war and poverty.
    For me, is the best and worst film of Tarkovsky; The best because an idolized artist is transform into an earthbound one with philosophical questions about the impact of a painting; And the worst because the unmoral way that Tarkovsky film the war scenes, live fractured and burned animals, and it will not be the last time he does something like it, in Stalker it is said that several died of cancer from the toxic gases of the place.
    I like a lot the cinema of Tarkovsky and his sculpting in time, but we can't forget this things to comprehend the vision of the director... Strongly recommend Andrei Rublev, and if you can, watch the uncensored version The passion according to Andrei. Thanks Daisuke for talk about it!
