      Yep, we moved to the country when I was 6 (1971) thought it was the end of the world at the time. The best thing that ever happened to me, going barefoot, swimming in the creek and most of all... growing a big ole garden full of everything. Good times, simple life, wouldn't change a thing.

      That is one of the best parts of the song to me. He had a friend in New York City that only ever called him hillbilly. They mailed each other shit. His friend gets killed for some bullshit and he talks about wanting to hunt his killer down and killing him. A hillbilly and a NYC big money business man... Right?

    Hank Williams wasn't just a country singer, he is THE country music legend. Hank Jr (aka Bocephus) was expected to be just like his dad musically, but he was just too different. So he went his own way and became a legend himself. His biography is really interesting, you guys should look it up.

    Once you live in the country, you're not worried about surviving. Hank is right.
    We hunted, fished, grew our food, raised hogs, chickens, rabbits. There was an old man down the road who had a couple of Jersey cows too. Everybody knew everybody and we watched out for each other.
    It wasn't survival skills to us. It was just life.

    A trout line is a row of fishing hooks you attached to short fishing lines. They are then attached to a long chord, chain, or rope every 10' or so. The idea is to try to catch any fish that swim near the trout line. Sometimes you can string it across a river, sometimes you string it up and down one side of a river close to the bank. Another form of "trout lines"... sometimes called drop lines, is where individual lines and fishing hooks are attached to roots protruding out of the river bank, tree limbs hanging low over the water, stumps, anything really along the edge of a river. The lines might be 100' apart or so, sometimes closer depending on the stretch of water. You drop the line so that the hook is a few feet under the water. Many times, you can tie a plastic bottle like an empty 2 litter bottle, or even empty milk jug, so that the fishing hook is dangling below the bottle 3-4 feet. When a fish is on the line, you'll see the limb bend and shake... if you're using an empty jug, you see the jug bob up and down in water. For bait it's common to use chicken liver, live minnows, crawfish, or even store-bought bait. Usually you "Line it" at or near dusk in a boat... (mostly flat bottom metal river boats) with a small battery operated motor or simply wooded paddles. The river (or sometimes lake) has to be large, deep, and slow enough to patrol with a boat. A trout line can be up to a mile long, but most of the time no more than a 1/4 of a mile. You start at a fishing camp, go up the river on one side of the bank, then come back down on the other side of the bank. Then you wait. Sometimes my dad and uncle would get up in the middle of the night, sometimes they would simply wait til about an hour before dawn. Then you check the lines. Most of the time trout are not caught, although you call it a trout line no matter where you're fishing. At night it's very common to catch Catfish. Some of the largest flathead river cat's are caught in the dead of night on lines like this. In the day you'll catch anything from Bass, catfish, large perch, crappy... just about anything. And no matter if you're using a "true" trout line, or a more common series of drop lines, this is the type of fishing I grew up with in the South and in "the country".

    Come on up to Mississippi brad we goin trot lineing this weekend nothing more exciting than running line at 3am pull up a 30lb catfish fighting like crazy and the sametime a gator bumping against the little john boat.. Fun fun. Grandpappay use to take hand grabbing that's where you stick your hand into a old hollowed out log just under water and fill around till a catfish bites down on your hand you grab it and the fight is on.. Trot lining is where you put hooks about every few feet on a heavy duty line drop it across the river let it sink tomthe bottom of the river thats where the big fish live.

      @evilfantasy69 2 роки тому +3

      That's jugging or noodling and you need to also use weights that set on the bottom of the lake to keep the from getting lost with the tide or tangled up. A trot line is when you tie a line between 2 trees (or whatever anchor points) with hooks on the line. You can stretch them anywhere on a lake or even across the channel of a river or stream.

But I also went through a Bocephus (Hank Jr.) stage and went to a show back in the mid/late 80's ('87?) and I'll tell you that was the scariest crowd I ever saw. More fights than all the other concerts I'd been to collectively. Rowdy crowd with a lot of whiskey down their necks. But it was a great show (and this suburban kid did survive). Trotline fishing is fun, we do it. Just like a line of treble hooks , maybe 10 hooks, with bait like chicken, stays on hooks really well. Then put in rivers around the evening. Leave overnight then check the next day. We normally catch catfish and gars. Also, that's steel guitar yall hear, blooming flowers, typical of blues , country music, bluegrass. Hank is part of the outlaw country genre. The playing style and twang makes it country sounding. Yall will be good out in the country. Yall are down to earth, funny, and cool, like most folks that live in rural areas. They are like yall. Plus, Brad has a pickup truck he'd get tons of friends out in the country 😆 🤠 they,d take you off-roading and muddin. Hunting and fishing. The ladies will bake, cook and gardening with Lex. A trot line is a submerged line going across a river with baited hooks attached every few feet. You run the line across the river then come back later, pull up the line, and see what you got.
    As a kid we used to pull up trot lines that we didn't set. If we had gotten caught it would've been an ass whippin.
    Cheers,

    A trotline is a heavy fishing line with individual, shorter, baited lines attached at intervals, commonly referred to as snoods. A snood is a short length of line which is attached to the main line using a clip or swivel, with the hook or bait at the other end. A trotline can be set so it covers the width of a channel, river, or stream with baited hooks.

    A trot line is used for a style of fishing that is all about food as opposed to sport. It is comparable to trapping in that you have to check your trot lines just about as often as you'd check your trap line. It can be confusing at first. A trap line is a series of animal traps set in the woods, usually close to, or along a creek, river, or stream. The "line" is the trail or path that goes from the first trap to the last. It can be quite a bit of hiking if you're checking them properly. The word "line" in the term "trot line" is an actual physical line, often made of tarred string that is typically strung across a non-navigable stream or small river that has several "leaders" ( shorter lengths of actual fishing line, hooked and baited on the end ) attached at intervals along the trot line that is strung between the banks. You bait your leaders on the trot line, then walk away. You return to check for fish after about an hour or so, or at even longer time intervals if fishing deep for cats.

    Brad, a trotline is a long, heavy line, usually string, that is secured to something above the water on one side, like a limb or pole, then anchored out in the water on the other side. It has several smaller lines, 2 to 3 feet long, that come off the main line, with a single baited hook. They are used mainly in flowing waters like rivers and creeks, to catch catfish. This song is a classic in Country music and is well known by everyone that lives in the country
