Wicked the novel is very different from the stage show and movie! It's dark, it's strange, it's very adult. If you know that going in, it's fine! Wasn't my fave book, but it's an interesting take on classic characters.

I just finished reading Wicked and I didn’t particularly like it; it was fine. It’s dark and more adult, and often those troubling moments felt unnecessary for the plot and character development. Which (personally) felt ickier because they felt purposeless. Lots of interesting themes, but I feel like if the author was a woman or a POC I would have liked the book a lot more. Overall, I like the storytelling of the musical better and enjoyed the balance of whimsy and deeper themes more. It’s also really long, so you can always DNF along the way lol

I read Wicked years ago and I remember being disappointed with it, though I can't remember why. It was so long ago.

No. I read it years ago but it was a slog to get thru.

Once you get through the world building in the book, I thought it was amazing. He took the worlds from the original books, wove a whole political system around that and it took a minute to do that in the beginning of the book. I believe that it’s worth the time.

I’ve read Wicked before since I absolutely love the Broadway show and now the movie. Do not waste your time! If you’re expecting the book to give you the same great feelings that the show gives, you’ll be disappointed.

I absolutely loved the book Wicked. I haven't seen the musical, but have heard the musical differs from a lot of the themes. Like even the argument that Glenda is the real wicked witch is not nearly complex enough. It is a book that requires a bit of digestion, in terms of thinking about what is being said, so If you like light and fast reads I would consider waiting until after the holidays.

I have not read Wicked but I’ve see the show 3 times and I think the story is brilliant. How the Wizard of Oz takes on an entire different meaning.
If the book doesn’t appeal, go see the movie. It is amazing and such a beautiful work of art! 💚🩷

I loved Wicked, the book, but it is very dark. The musical is only loosely based on the book. The subsequent books in the series are also interesting, but also dark. The author’s take on other fairytales were interesting, too.

I paused this mid-video to print the tiny sock pattern. So cute! I got a super cheap acrylic advent with 5g bits of yarn. I've made a few tiny ornaments including a crochet stocking, but these are perfect.

Wicked was tough to get into for a good portion of the book. I read it a long time ago, but I think I remember enjoying it in the end. But it really was tough at the beginning. Definitely was not expecting the storyline in the book 😂

I read Wicked as a tween and I was TRAUMATISED, but it might be better as an adult? I would say that I read the whole TOG series the year before last and it's still one of the best things I've ever read. I would SO recommend the rest of that series!

    • @KnittyNatty

Oh nooo. Maybe I'm better to stick with TOG 😅

Wicked was one of the first books I ever DNF’d - I worked at a bookstore in the early 2000s and was fortunate enough to see the show in previews in SF and was SORELY disappointed in the book. I am sure it’s good in it’s own way and maybe if I’d read it before seeing the show I’d have felt differently. But I never finished it and no regrets!
Also most quoted Will Ferrel line in my family is from Talladega Nights - “RICKY BOBBY YOU ARE NOT ON FIRE”

Stranger Than Fiction and Everything Must Go are my favourite Will Ferrell movies.....admittedly, i'm not a big fan of his humour (i do love Elf, though 😁)....i really love his more serious roles ❤

I read the book Wicked and the rest of that series years before I watched the show (haven't seen the movie). I thought the major changes in the show from the book were really cleverly done, but it's a completely different work. The show is really made to be a crowd-pleaser, and well, they know about popular. On the other hand, the book is dark and unapologetically political.

I had such a hard time getting through the book Wicked, but I enjoyed the Broadway production and loved the movie. I can’t remember if I finished the book or not, but I remember it was dark and kind of a slog for me. Just not my kind of book, I guess!

WIcked is a heavy read and was difficult to get through; it was much heavier than the musical. It's definitely more of a political/social commentary. When I read it, I didn't necessarily like it. But then I watched the live musical and that was lightened up so much, that it made me really appreciate the book more. I also ended up enjoying the movie much more than the live musical as well. I think my order of preference is movie>book>stage musical. But the book is not a light read.

I haven't watched the play or movie versions of Wicked. I and my sister enjoyed all of Gregory Maguire's Oz based books. If you are an L. Frank Baum purist, then you won't enjoy Maguire's twist on things, deep, dark, and moody. Not light, easy reads. Just as I haven't watched any of the new Dune stuff. I've read every book in Frank Hebert's Dune series to include some written by his son (very deep into politics, ecology, religion, and technology). Prefer the original long version, Dune movie, not the shorter version. The shorter version leaves out some important details.

If you like the musical or movie, don’t bother reading the Wicked book. There are very few books in this world that I will say are honestly bad, and that is one of them. 😅 I mean, read what you like! Everyone has different tastes. But if you’re looking for it to be even mildly like the show or movie, you aren’t going to find it.

The book is awful. The characters are poorly developed and there is a lot of crazy things and unusual sex things. I started it and was forcing my way through it. Then I remembered I can choose to stop reading it and did. I am truly concerned for all the children whose suspecting parents and grandparents will buy it for them this holiday season.

Weird that a dyer would choose to participate in an advent calendar and then be catty about the subject. Dislike.
