It feels so refreshing to come across someone who understands the power and beauty of this band’s work so clearly. I feel like it’s impossible to express how much raw and dignified emotion their songs can evoke in someone. When I listen to them, everything goes away, and the layers of the song that I hear is all that matters in the world. Listening to them makes me feel like I could pass from life feeling satisfied with having lived it enough; because I had the gift of knowing the sounds of this band. I’m 15 and I feel like one of the only people I know who’s been touched so deeply by a band before, and it’s so hard to explain. Depeche Mode has saved and made my life. There are some things you come to love that you know nobody or nothing could ever match it.
Well said. Many life long fans have said similar. I can definitely say that this band did save my life when I was younger and had thoughts about ending my life.
You are not alone. I was around your age when I started listening to them and they had a huge impact on my teenage life. When I discovered their music, it was just right, a match, immediate love. Wow, you're 15 and love them and it just shows us time and time again that their songs are timeless and that we can not help what we connect with in this world. When something speaks to you it's such a pure feeling. They have so, so many great songs. There's a song for every stage of life, every emotion. Truly they an incredible band. I have my tickets for 2023!!
Agree! Glad we live times when DM music has so much mass success worlwide in the same time with the “one/two notes” (so called) “modern” music, anyway I always felt MG/AW had a classical music vibe and complexity in their compositions/arrangements
Couldn’t feel more strongly in agreement with what’s been said above. I sometimes feel that the one/two note layered songs that are spewed out excessively these days are drowning out the newer generations’ clarity in what real, authentic music is.. But everyday I feel so grateful that in any timeline I could’ve lived in, I happened to be alive in one where DM exists!! Even if I’m a few decades late haha. Being able to resonate with other like-minded people is such a freeing feeling, I’m really glad that this band has touched so many in the way I know it’s touched me. They’re truly one of a kind. I could just get lost in all the layers of sound and keys and synths that their work embodies for hours. Counting down the days till I see them in 2023 as well, I definitely wouldn’t have been able to live with myself if I didn’t get to see them in my lifetime!!
So many of us can relate to what you are saying. I heard and fell in love with DM on my 15th birthday and now 31 years later I still listen to them pretty much daily. Their music still speaks to me so deeply, and has saved my life as well 🤗.

I'm not the only one considering Agent Orange a great song 😂 I even put it at 1st place
I have in your room at first place and don't forget the love thieves
I think nothing should get into my top5
I'm very surprised that you all don't write about Usseles because in my opinion it's in the top five
@@jaydentic3414 The way you wrote that message sounds like you're saying no song should be in the top 5, which makes no sense, and then no.6 becomes no.1 and then you have top 5 again which no song should be in, and you create a paradox! But I do agree, "Nothing" is a great song btw!

2. World In My Eyes
3. Shake The Disease
4. Strangelove
5. Black Celebration
6. Policy Of Truth
7. A Question Of Time

My top 10
10- World in my eyes
9- Blasphemous Rumors
8- Walking in my Shoes
7- Little 15
6- Stripped
5- Never let me Down Again
4- Mercy in You
3- Waiting for the Night
2- Black Celebration
1- In Your Room
Holy shit how did you get into my brain lol that's probably the same top ten list I would've made
I might switch out Walking in my Shoes with Nothing, only because the beat is soooo damn hypnotic. The version of Nothing from their live 101 album is amazing.
*edit to add that Policy of Truth would be in the list somewhere, maybe in place of Little 15. You know it's an incredible band when making such a list is crazy difficult because you start to recall all the songs which hit you in the soul🤣
@@cloudbloom I found it difficult to put it only to 10 songs. Of course, after I typed my list, I was like I forgot this song and this one. Policy of Truth would be on it too as well as Question of Time, and The things You Said.
I should have done honorable mentions. Lol
Tack!
Thanking you Sir!! VG :-)

Black Celebration
Wrong
I must mention that I have been a fan since hearing Strangelove for the first time in 7th grade. I frequently listened to every album and B side from Black Celebration to Delta Machine. I absolutely LOVED the Delta Machine record in its entirety and it is the last album I loved of theirs. It was a sexy album. I could not do the political stuff on Spirit and it was their worst album in my opinion. I went to see them in 2013 in Las Vegas and I loved that concert because it was so intimate. Thank you Depeche Mode for all the memories.
I forgot to mention The Child Inside - that one is a beauty.
Shake the disease gave me a veritable Out-Of-Body experience when I heard Martin perform it live in Zurich stadium in 2014 - the entire audience was singing along, and my soul sang along as well and it all turned into one. Definitely one of the more sublime moments of my life up to now.

“Shake the Disease” IS their best song ever. Kudos to “Here is the House”. That one touches me at an indescribable level.
Agreed. There is something special about "Here is the House" that hits hard.

I'd by that too in a heartbeat
Agreed - I was going to write the dame thing.
I have just watched this again Vaughn and have to say I have never stripped the musical layers back to appreciate how pure some of the melodies are. Love Depeche even more now (and that says something!) Thank you 😊
You are very welcome! I'm always happy to help people hear things in a different way ! VG 😎👍🎹

I love that you have "Rush" on there. That's my number one.
Vaughn, you described my feelings about "Waiting for the night". This song really makes me cry. My favorite DM song. This is a gem, a truly special song. Cheers from Brazil.
Enjoy the Silence is a masterpiece and still gives me goosebumps. This song woke me from a dead sleep having left my radio on one night in 1989..By then I'd been a DM fan since 1983 .I remember sitting up and thinking, what a gorgeous melody .
Same. It's the one that I remember hearing first, but them. I think in VH1. Fell in love with the band ever since. Z😄

1. In Your Room (The apotheosis of Depeche Mode)
Honorables: But Not Tonight (love it, a friend of mine, whom I introduced to the band told me to have a keen look on this one and Judas, he was definetly not mistaken), Breathe, The Things You Said, Nothing's impossible, One Caress
In your room (The apotheosis of Depeche Mode) Yes, that’s right! Devotional starts with Higher Love and ends with In your room … (except Encore)
"In Your Room' and 'Insight" have been resonating and haunting me greatly lately. My Dad has been ill, and be it visiting him in the Hospital or long walks by nightfall under cushioned starlight, the deep dark atmospherics of those songs have harnessed all the drama within and around. I loved this analysis of your own meaningful songs to you.
Great vid.
I’m surprised Walking in My Shoes didn’t make your list. Great lyrics, huge sound, lots of Allan touches.
Yes definitely my no. 1, how could you miss this one VG?

Your announcement of “Shake the Disease”:
Wow!
This was such a stunningly unexpected whopper of a surprise, that the joyous emotional tidalwave of love for this song (listening to it has been a solitary lonely experience), washed over me and immediately brought me to tears. I wasnt ready for that. For me this song is such a magnificent expression of such complex emotions, that to have several decades of being so moved by it and yet no one (that I know of) with which to revel in its glory with, has been its own form of torture. It would be like having the most amazing chef prepare the most fantastic meal for you every evening, but on the one condition that you must always eat it alone. Bittersweet. So I am overjoyed to share in your exuberant appreciation and deep feeling for this song. Thank you, so much for all that you do (and have done) on this channel to connect to and elucidate such a deeply complicated experience that is Depeche Modism.

@D D Day esq Yeah, I just love Freestate. 😁 Dave’s vocals are very good on Ultra. Yes, it was missing Alan Wilder, but it’s still an amazing album.
I still remember summer 1985, when I was on vacation with my parents in France. I spent days in bed with a really severe sunburn, equipped with a tape recorder and only one single tape in it with a collection of top40 songs that I had recorded from TV. Shake the Disease was the one track that I listened to again and again with its strange chord sequence, weird sounds and layers of synths complementing each other so perfectly. I was not exactly a DM fan at that time but this song was so different from all the rest that it was practically impossible not to become one...
My top ten:
10. Somebody
09. Stripped
08. Enjoy The Silence
07. But Not Tonight
06. Home / Useless
05. Precious
04. The Sun and The Rainfall
03. Policy of Truth
02. Never Let Me Down Again
01. It's No Good
It's No Good is such a banger, that's my favorite too.
@@Subject98 The opening minute is one of my favourites on any song ever. Just makes you move.
Nice list. Covers a wide spectrum of DM.
I can’t decide my top 10, but It’s no good is so good. The swooping synth line over the sampled guitar. Wonderful.
@D D Day esqThanks for the shout out to Policy of Truth. This is their best song for me. I am shocked I am not seeing more love for it on here. It has my favorite production of any song I have ever heard from any band of any era. I love the rest of this list, and all of the songs people are calling out are great. But, I gotta wonder what it is about my favorite that is clearly my own.
My favorite Depeche Mode era is between Construction Time Again to Black Celebration. One of my favorite songs is And then...
I couldn't quite comment on the top 10 least favorite because I never took the time to evaluate that, but I'll do a rough selection on what my 10 favorite is looking like today:

Though it’s an extremely fluid ranking, mine would be
1. Halo
2. Higher Love
3. Enjoy the Silence
4. Clean
5. If You Want
6. Nothing
7. Stripped
8. Never Let Me Down Again
9. The Things You Said

If I’m allowed 5 honorable mentions they would be: Strange Love, Blasphemous Rumors, Policy of Truth, And Then, and Fools
Nice to see If You Want on the list. Love that track.
Including Question of Lust as top 3 I’d have never expected!
Your appreciation, love, and knowledge of the band really comes through in your videos and it's a joy (even in your least favorite list)! But not Tonight isn't in my top 10, but I hear you, I will never forget seeing a youtube video of Martin Live at the Troubadour singing it in 2013. Gave it a whole new dimension and those same lyrics have also resonated with me.
I can't pick a top 10. My top 6 is pretty constant: 1. Behind the Wheel 2. In Your Room 3. Home 4. Stripped 5. Shake the Disease. 6. Enjoy the Silence
The others shift but for today are: 7. Condemnation 8. Clean 9. Insight 10. Cover me

8. Higher Love
9. It's no good
10. My Joy
Honourable tracks: Shake the decease, World in my eyes, Clean, Black Celebration, Sister of night.
I totally agree to all your words about But Not Tonight. For me this song is mysterious, because it sounds so intense like a Vince Clark Yazoo song.
My all time favourite by the way is „Ice Machine“ in the live Version on the Blasphemous Rumours B-Side.
1) In Your Room
2) Walking In My Shoes
3) Leave In Silence
4) Enjoy The Silence

3. Jezebel

7. Stripped
8. Here Is the House (the live version with Martin's voice and guitar, IMHO the album track goes into a wrong direction)
9. Shake the Disease
10. Walking in My Shoes
Thank you, Vaughn, sang each one along with you, really took me somewhere.
Shake the disease/Walk in my shoes/Everything counts(great instrumentation)/Enjoy the silence/See you/Blashemous rumours/Free love /Stripped/Master and servant/Never let me down..Just my(cliched, predictable) top 10 no particular order.Btw ...5:26!!!!Thanx ,that was so beautiful. It sounds so great in the more 'acoustic' option.
I tried to find a song from the Violator album that I could justify in my top 10 or even top 15 but I feel like this album was a little too mainstream. Halo and Waiting for the Night are my favorite tracks from it. Actually the only song produced after 1987 that I could include was Walking in My Shoes which I find nostalgic of Never Let Me Down but goes deeper for me. I actually like the Violator, Songs of Faith and Devotion, and Ultra albums a lot but they don’t resonate with me like 1982-1987 Depeche Mode.
1. Here is the House
2. Sun and the Rainfall
3. Everything Counts
4. Behind the Wheel
5. Shake the Disease
6. My Secret Garden
7. But Not Tonight
8. Blasphemous Rumors
9. A Question of Lust
10. Walking in my Shoes
Honorable Mention
1. Stripped
2. People are People
3. And Then
4. Leave in Silence
5. Never Let me Down Again
I have cried several times listening to But Not Tonight. It reminds me so much of being in my room dancing on my own. It’s magical. The outro, lyrics, motives… Black Celebration was my first album, I bought it in 1997 when I was 14 just because it had the title track, which I had listened to in the early 90s on a random recorded casette. 😂 So random. I hope BC and Stripped are on this list too. We’ll see
Ah ..... am with ya on that 1....reminds me of leaving school over 3 decades ago n missin all my school mates that went to uni .... leave in silence was my 1st get away tune🫠😙
But Not Tonight is not on Black Celebration as the band meant the album to be. Was added by their US label.
@@iamarjanib6784 I know that. The last song is NEW DRESS. But for me BUT NOT TONIGHT belongs in this album/era. My version of the cd had the extended as the closer and that for me is the perfect way to finish the album. Melancholy and darkness. Dancing while crying. Understanding the Pain vs Happiness dichotomy of life, while singing to those ghostly Martin vocals on repeat as the song fades away. 😎 And then start the album again with the title track 🤣😅🎶
First time I saw But Not Tonight Video was on MTV when I was 15. I remember this moment very distinctly. I just came home in the late evening and it was pouring rain outside. I was completely wet. I entered my house and my sister was watching it on 180 Minutes on MTV. I’m from Southern California, it hardly rains here. But Not Tonight appeared at the right place at the right time, I’ll never forget it.
i have cried a lot listening to policy of truth and stripped
Great list Mr George, you had me crying. I couldn't decide as there are so many great songs.
Cheers Pablo !! Don't cry brother !! Lots of love!! VG :-)
Well done! For some reason I wouldn't have "Shake the Disease" as #1 but I now can't get it out of my head so maybe you are right lol.
Loved the video! I don't comment often on here but always love watching your videos. Keep it going!
Here's my Top 10:
1. Here is the House
2. A Question of Lust
3. The Landscape is Changing
4. Stripped
5. Sister of Night
6. Only When I Lose Myself
7. Sacred
8. Walking In My Shoes
9. It's No Good
10. My Secret Garden
And a short honourable mention to what I think is their most underappreciated song: The Sweetest Condition
I love the way "Here Is The House" segues into my favorite DM song, "World Full Of Nothing". First time I met Martin I told him how much I loved that song and they should play it live. Next tour, which was the Violator Tour, Martin played it. We met again. He told me he remembered our conversation. True story!
Of course, remembering the conversation doesn't necessarily mean that he chose to follow your advice.
1) Higher Love
2) Personal Jesus
3) Enjoy the Silence
4) Walking in my Shoes
5) In your room (album version)
6) Black Celebration
7) Clean
8) Secret Garden
9) Everything Counts
10) Judus/Get Right With Me.
I’m not a fan of their work once Alan Wilder left
I also love the live version of ‘I Feel You’ as performed on the Devotional tour but didn’t think this counted
Wow, what a list. I got goosebumps when it started with But Not Tonight which became one of my favourite DM songs when they played it in their slow live version (Hamburg with rain). I must admit that it made my cry then … and still does.
Never Let Me Down Again is may all time favorite song (of any band) so it simply had to appear on this list to be approved … well done ;)
I am new to this channel, so I was a bit surprised to find Shake The Disease on the Top. But not in a bad way. I think it is not one of their most popular songs, is it? However, I still love it too.
And all the other songs. So many great creations of music. I have never thought of making a Top Ten list for myself, but thinking about honourable mentions I’d choose these:
- Blasphemous Rumors
- Higher Love
- Nothing
- Rush
Will check your Least Favourite Songs List now …
In Your Room (zephyr mix) is the only version I will listen to
It’s fucking delightful watching how you reproduce/explain each of your top 10 DM songs. In my opinion, Martin and Dave could consider you replacing Fletcher, if that is possible/acceptable. Your love and dedication to DM, as well as your talent, would easily qualify you for that.
Regards and thank you for each video you post.
1. In Your Room
2. Stripped
3. Mercy in You
4. I Feel You
5. ENTIRE VIOLATOR ALBUM

13. Only When I lose Myself
14. Home

17. Its No Good
18. I Feel Loved (it faster than other singles from Exiter)

22. Stjarna (Many emotions in about 4,5 minutes)
23. Fly on the Windscreen

30. Love, in Itself
31. Everything Counts
32. The Landscape is Changing
33. Two Minutes Warning

Choosing 10 fave DM tracks are an almost impossible task, but here’s my take:
1. The things you said
2. Stripped
3. Strangelove
4. Enjoy the silence
5. Walking in my shoes
6. Never let me Down again
7. New dress
8. World in my eyes
9. Policy of truth
10. Shine
Really good.
Another good video Vaughn!! As we all know, there are so many great Depeche Mode songs and don’t know if I have a top ten but maybe there are some DM songs I listen to more than others and some versions that are more superior to others, therefore, I will be including with some songs the remix or alternate versions as well. So, in no particular order….
1. World in My Eyes / World In My Eyes (Mode To Joy Mix) / World In My Eyes (1993 Devotional Tour live version) / World In My Eyes (Daniel Miller Remix)
2. Halo / Halo (2013 live version)
3. Stripped / Stripped (1993 Devotional Tour live version)
4. Clean / Clean (2005 acoustic version)
5. Strangelove / Strangelove (Maxi Mix)
6. Never Let Me Down Again
7. The Things You Said
8. My Joy

10. Fly On The Windscreen / Fly On The Windscreen (1993 Devotional Tour live version)
11. Home
12. Dream On / Dream On (Bushwaka Remix)
13. Dangerous (Sensual Mix)
14. In Your Room / In Your Room (Jeep Rock Mix)
15. Nothing / Nothing (Justin Strauss Remix) / Nothing (Headcleanr Rock Remix)
So many honorable mentions for songs I can’t mention them but I love them all the same. These are just the DM songs I play the most but the rest get quite a heavy rotation as well from time to time and we all pretty much know what era those songs come from.
I could do a top 20 and still not be satisfied. One that's probably in my top 5 that doesn't seem to appear on a lot of others is the song Freestate. The atmosphere is this mix of melancholy, mystery and beauty and it's masterfully done imo.
I love pretty much every song on Ultra and that’s one of my faves!
@@Wraiven22 Nice. Ultra definitely belongs to their prime era if you ask me.
