    Some people are just fascinated with history. Not everything is about racism or any type of “ism” it’s just interest. Is every historian that is fascinated by hitler/nazis or American colonization or literally any other war since the beginning of time mean they HATE one side? No. Some people are just intrigued. That’s not wrong.

    I wouldnt pause games being made for any amount of time simply because if I dont want or need new games then I can always just stop buying them, but I wouldn't want to deprive others of new games. I have slowed my purchase of games this year.

    Colonisation also equates to exploration which is fun

      Agree. Big difference wether it is colonisation within a futuristic space themed 4X game or a historic real world example like Puerto Rico or Mombasa.

    • @thegreatdane908
      @thegreatdane908 24 дні тому

      Except they are actually quite different. Exploration is just about exploring a place and discovering what is there. While colonization is specifically about exploring a place where there are already people living, and then exploiting those people for personal gain, in addition to exploring the area.
      So you definitely can have an exploration game that has nothing to do with colonization, the key difference is the exploitations of human beings. So if you like the exploring part of the game then maybe exploration games are for you. Or if you like the exploiting humans for personal financial gain part of the game, then maybe colonization games are for you.
      And I'm not saying every colonization game is specifically about exploiting other human beings, but they're not, not about it either you know?

    1. Assuming we know nothing about rules/mechanics, I'd easily gravitate towards the IP, assuming I care at all about the IP. If you show me an IP I'm not interested in (example: Subway Surfer, or some other crappy phone game), I'd go with the non-IP.
    2. Miniatures hands down. Acrylic stands to me is the cost-cutting form of a miniature, they are hard to see at two specific angles, and they usually take up more space on a board than a miniature.
    3. Selfishly, no. Saving money and reducing manufacturing waste producing packaging waste and low-quality games is something I can get behind. While I'm not aggressively pursuing every single new game announced, but part of my journey in this hobby that keeps me going is the discovery of new games. While it does chew through my wallet each year, I think if I ever stopped looking for new games for an extended period of time, this hobby will probably fizzle out for me. I find I crave the novelty of a new/fresh experience (i.e. not playing the same game all the time). If this was a 2-4 year period, I'd say yes and I would think the hobby could survive for me.
    4. Competitive.
    5. Primarily content creators prototype preview/recommendations, then ads on social media. Keep recommending good stuff through an honest lens, Alex. For me, you people with the more critical thoughts on longevity and factors extending outside of the game itself are meaningful insights for someone like me who cares about what makes a game come back to the table.

    Possible question:
    Preferred campaign length
    I'm very interested in this one! So many campaigns advertise with "100+ missions" or "more than 300 hours of gameplay". For me those are HUGE turnoffs, but I love campaign games, so I'm always so happy when cool thematic campaign games with 3 or 10 missions or so come out! But they're very much in the minority...

    I think for the miniatures vs acrylics question price sensitivity is a factor, but if the intent of the question was to just gauge preference without taking that into consideration, then fair enough. Personally I'll take the acrylic standees if they're available and at least somewhat cheaper than the miniatures but if price for both is equal then I'll go for minis.

    4 Questions for future polls. Adjust them and remix them as you like.
    1. Have you sold a "play to win" game as "punched and sorted only"? A: No; Yes; Yes b/c others probably do it
    2. When you are buying a used game from another gamer, what sort of discounted price are you expecting (or is "fair")? Caveats, assuming the condition is very good, regardless of the games production year, it's still in print, it's not new that same year/previous year, and it's the only edition also said there aren't three different versions of the same game (Castles of Burgundy) which could alter the price. A: $10 off; $20 off; Lower than the lowest price on BGG; 50% off retail; 75% off retail
    3. Separate from your personal gaming collection of games you like and play, do you purchase games you don't like and other only view as collecting or flipping later on? A: Yes, finding deals and making money off the hobby is fun; No, hasseling with storing, shipping and selling those games at the right time and the time that all takes isn't worth the money gained; No, who has extra money for that sort of thing, but if I did I would though
    4. What is more annoying when purchasing an item in the hobby? A: A single promo costs as much as half of the games value; A second edition comes out with updated rules, gameplay, and scoring making your copy "outdated"; Misprints and errors in a production; Low production quality, but a decent price; very good production, with a bloat and oversized everything with a larger price; an expansion releasing in one part of the world, but not getting reprinted and released everywhere else

    Stopping games for 10 years is tough. I wouldn't want to deprive anyone of new games, but my wallet would appreciate it. Perhaps 500 games in the next 10 years would be more interesting. Hopefully new games would be more quality driven, and there would be a higher emphasis on older games.
    As to Miniatures vs Acrylic Standees, it really depends for me. If the mini's are painted, then I would prefer them over standees. However, because Im not a painter, I do like the colourised acrylic standees over unpainted mini's. In addition pricing and quantity of characters are contributors also. If there are potentially hundreds of characters, I would prefer characters that are playable as miniatures and villains/bosses as standees.

    Thoughts on the "stopping all new games" question:
    I don't want to lose out on the innovation of new things. However, there are far too many games out there for gamers to have a shared language.
    If someone plays a lifestyle game like a TCG or LCG, they can go to planned gatherings and find players and community.
    If I meet someone who plays board games and I ask what they like, it can range from the American classic (Monopoly) to the Modern Classic (Catan, TTR), to hobby games I've never heard of. I can name off my top ten games and have no crossover with someone who may actually like the weight and type of games I like. It's hard to have a shared language and cohesion as a hobby when everyone has such vastly different interests.
    That's why the new hotness exists - because there's a subset of the hobby that are all in on what's new, so at least they're interested in playing the new stuff at the same time as everyone else. That's why stopping all new game production would actually splinter our hobby a bit, because no one would know where to start. It would be like a professor assigning a textbook but not telling everyone what to read, and everyone started at different points. How do you have a discussion when no one has read the same chapter?

    Ngl, I kinda wish there was more good fanservice in board games. I definitely feel there's not enough to my tastes, but I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea. Suggestions for questions:
    1. What is your favorite theme for a game (sci-fi/fantasy/real world-current/real world-historic/completely abstract/cthulu etc)
    2. What game mechanic you enjoy the most? (Deck building/dice rolling/etc).
    3. If a game allows you to play it safe and get a guaranteed result but a small one or gamble/push your luck (you can get a better result or noting at all) which do you usually choose (safe option/risky option/depends on situation).
    4. On average what is your preferred player count for a game?
    5. On average what is your ACTUAL player count for your gaming sessions?
    6. Who do you play with the most? (Friends/family/partner-spouse/strangers).
    7. Favorite game type? (Euro/legacy/RPG-like/area control etc)
    8. Do you paint the miniatures for your games?
    I'd be curious to see the results and honored if any of the above are to your liking to include in a form. 😊

    I may be one of the ones "more interested in games with colonialism" or similars. Basically, an historical theme.
    The reason why is basically the same of watching a movie or documentary about it, just to learn something about ourselves as Humanity while being entretained.
    It is true that the game shoud show a great deal of respect and put the player in interesting positions, though.
    A good example of that is Freedom: The Underground Railroad.
    It's very hard to me to play pure wargames, though.
    Just because most feel like "war as a game" instead of "a game about a war".
    But maybe is just my pacifist side fighting my gamer one.. not sure.

  • @buddyberglund
    @buddyberglund 20 днів тому

    I don't know if I said this on the last video, but some of these questions were hard to answer, and I don't remember how I did wind up answering. For example, the abstract violence theme doesn't matter to me as a THEME, so based purely on that as a theme, I wouldn't be more or less likely to play a game with that. However, since those games are usually area control, or some other type of PvP, fighting other players mechanism, which I absolutely hate, I would be far less likely to play games with that theme, because of the game, itself, not because of the theme.
    If someone said a game had the theme of several armies fighting each other for supremacy of a map, and that's all I knew, I'd say no thank you. Then, if they said that it's a co-op game where all the players are part of the same army fighting against game/AI/automa controlled armies for supremacy of a map, sign me up. Because the theme doesn't bother me, just the mechanisms typically associated with that theme.
    Same with the more direct violence theme. Gloomhaven co-op, yes. Arcadia Quest PvP, absolutely no. Theme, in and of itself, neither yes nor no.

    @refreshdaemon 26 днів тому

    For IP vs. non-IP, I think it entirely depends. There are plenty of terrible games with IPs I love and there are plenty of games I love that don't have pre-existing IPs attached. I think I'm more likely to care about the game's design and production more than the matter of whether it has an IP I love or not, but I chose "IP" because I will almost always look into a new game that has an IP I like, even if that won't necessarily get me to buy or play it.
    I chose minis over acrylic standees mostly because I get to paint them? I don't even like painting that much, but I really like how fully painted minis look on the table. But the preference is small. I'm happy with either over cardboard standees or wooden discs. I think screen printed wooden figures are also quite nice too.
    No way would I stop games from coming out for 10 years, but I do wish there was some kind of "reprint" button that I could push to get some of the games that got away from me before I could get them so I wouldn't have to pay the OOP tax.

    • @BoardGameCo
      @BoardGameCo  26 днів тому

      The question was a bit of a disguise, but the main idea of it is whether you view a game with an IP as likely to be better because you like the IP, or worse because they don't have to make as good of a game because they are relying on the IP to sell.
      For me it's publisher dependent, but if I didn't know the publisher beforehand, I would argue less likely.

    • @DanteDeathless
      @DanteDeathless 26 днів тому

      @@BoardGameCo If that was your intention then I think that the question phrasing is not good. If I'd treat the question literally as it is asked (and I think that's what I'll do) then I'd choose the IP that I like. If I choose between something that I like and something random, the answer is obvious.
      But if it's about whether the IP game can not be as good but still make me buy it because of the IP - the answer is hard no. Bad game with an IP attached which is dear to me would tarnish the memory of the IP and I wouldn't want it anywhere near me.
      Overall I think that an IP will be easier for me to notice the game and much less likely to buy it.

    • @MOSPHIRE
      @MOSPHIRE 25 днів тому

      I agree the question would be better if it was more specific. I interpreted it as would I rather play an ip game, if both the ip and non ip game are of the same genre? For example Monster hunter or Primal. But you’re right, the question says ‘without any more context’ and then the question is actually: What do you like more? Playing a game you know nothing about or playing a game you only know one thing about and that thing is something you like.

  • @ea_gaming

    1) It 100% depends on how it’s handled. I’ve seen a lot of IP’s get butchered (more in film/TV, but still) so I now prefer they not exist. But if I knew it’d be faithful, an IP theme is better than generic.
    2) Also depends- prepainted minis are the best, but so few do them, and acrylics beat grey plastic every day

    In the Role playing game side of table top gaming, there are rpgs I think should not exist. These include white supremist garbage and the like. They are distributed via pdfs. Fortunately, the nature of board games needing a physical printing weeds this out as publishers won't touch this with a 50 foot pole. So there are no board games that I think shouldn't exist, but there are rpgs I think shouldn't exist.

  • @nofriendsgg
    @nofriendsgg 25 днів тому

    It interests me that more people were indifferent or positive toward colonization than other themes such as over-the-top violence or Hitler/Nazis, since colonization appears to be more controversial. People might admit a personal distaste for a theme, but I haven't seen them militantly criticizing the designer or publisher of games like Secret Hitler or Sniper Elite. But I have seen aggressive denouncements of Puerto Rico (including a rejection of Puerto Rico 1897 by its own cultural consultant) and of games like Mombasa and Great Western Trail which have been compelled to reskin their colonial aspect. And people who politely disagree are attacked or censored on boardgamegeek for being "dismissive".
    I think it's fine if you have a personal objection to a theme, but you shouldn't judge others and enforce your objection on to them. We ought to recognize that designing and playing a board game with a colonization theme does not equate to condoning colonization.

    One guess for the increase of people who would want to play a game with Nazis could be because they like to kill/defeat them. I have a friend who will play EVERY/ANY game with a Nazi team and he will always play against them. He refuses to be Secret Hitler (as in if he gets the role he'll state he needs it to be redealt).
