I can see why Magnus called it a cheap trick - to pull it off he exchanged a winning position (stockfish 11: -1) to a losing position (+4.2) with the expectation that Bill will blunder and mate himself. The only way to escape the mate threat while maintaining the winning position is to move the rook.
People here aren't noting how after he said whatever, he said how he wouldn't understand it anyways. He's just doing it for the laughs guys,maybe he could've changed the wording of whatever to be more respectful but what he said afterwards is just humbling.
Thing is, if he wouldn't, he'd run out of time soonish. One can play whole games with only 30 sec online, but in face-to-face there ain't no premoving and the moving takes you ever so long. Look how he just lost three seconds by accidentaly knocking the pawn.
@@wiede9312 Not really true, I've played vs Carlsen and seen him play vs many of my friends with 30 sec timers as well as done it myself, you can easily play 60 move games against worse people, because you use the opponents time to both do the thinking and to prethink your movement. Knocking over pieces will cost you time, but you can usually do the first 15 moves in less than 5 seconds. Carlsen was not trying his hardest here, he usually moves way faster than this.
He said that to let Bill save face. You could tell Bill didn't really want to play. He's obviously a super competitive guy by nature and most likely has a huge ego. Not saying he's a bad guy or anything, but that's just how I read the situation.

The thing he said about philantropy was really great. I think more people should listen to this. Of course 100 billion dollars are more than a small amount of money. But a billionaire who donates billions of dollars still got billions. Someone who has to give up on something they want or need just to help someone else could be considered more generous. I'm not shaming on rich people for donating, I just loved to hear it from someone in that exact position.

I love what Bill Gates and his organization is doing , i believe that’s how the wealthy should use their money - to help those in need ! God bless everyone !
nobody asks for people not to be wealthy. But if you can do whatever you want and still have spare money to help the world then you should. I'm glad he understands that and encourages others to.
