As Americans we are not exposed to many other cultures and tend to have a more narrow world view. Today I want to take a look at the video talking about the World According to Americans. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!
We weren't taught these things at school either, but there'd be a map of the world on the wall, and when we were bored with the lesson we'd look at that. And maybe there'd be an atlas in the bookcase or a globe on top of it. We looked at those too.
The preamble, "Don't take this too seriously..." is misleading. When my then 10-yr old son joined his DC school on our arrival for my US work contract, his school had him attend grade 10 geography classes, grade 11 Spanish and French, and simply sit his English exit test. Back home he wasn't rated in the top 10 percent for his age.
Hilarious. 😆🤣 Thanks for not taking it too seriously Tyler.
Could have been worse. One time on that channel they ended up with the country of IKEA for the Ukranian flag.
😅😂
I think part of the problem is that you have a rather confusing situation in the US, with the states - a "state" could also mean a country - and the fakt that you refer to your own country as "America", which isnt really a country but a continent (or two).
No, the problem is simply lack of knowledge of that fact
The problem is obvious: public education
@@alessandrosilvafilho8527 No, the problem is attitude
The USA is not the only country with states and Australia is also equated to their continent. And yet this issue seems more extreme among Americans.
There's one continent that is a country, Australia. Antarctica whilst not defined as a country has peguins more intelligent than many Americans.
I was always thought that Australia was part of the Oceania continent, but that was back in the 80's..... so a lots of things have changed since then. I had to look it up, and I'm glad to now know the continent is known as Australia now and not Oceania. I learned something new today. Thanks @francis-c9s 🙂
But continental divisions are not a consensus worldwide. In Brazil and other South American countries, we place Australia together with the islands of the South Pacific in a continent called Oceania. In the USA, they probably ignore the fact that the other islands exist.
Africa is a continent. Asia is a continent. Australasia is a continent. The Americas are a Continent. Etc......
Actually, Australia is not a continent any more, it's now a part of Oceania. It has been redefined.
As a French person, I've been taught by my parents and at schools that Australia is a country that is part of Oceania, it isn't his own continent.
I don't understand why so many people consider Australia as a whole continent and not just a country...
Im a 71 year old Brit who left school with no formal qualifications. At a push I could name ( and place them on a map ) 160 of the 190 + countries of the world. By the way, Greenland is not a ' country '.
It is today
I am a 71 year old English woman, left school after a full year in the Lower Sixth, came away with 6 CSE's (2 of which e the same: 'Social Studies' bothwith Grade 4.. :-/ ) but the countries on the maps / Atlas' I had showed different borders to today's countries so I am behind you in that respect - if your world knowledge of countries and their borders is up to date. I am fairly sure I'd fail naming most of Europe on a world map, but hope I'd be okay with most of the larger countries and now the difference between a continent and a country, though I was taught the Australia is an ispand continent, but have heard recently that is incorrect (?) ...
I may pronounce some differently to Americans too - like _Iraq_ not as "Eye_rack"!
Or _Iran_ not as "Eye_ran" like Tyler here.
Also (by the by) _not_ "Ay_toll" but instead, 'At_oll'. And,
unlike Steve, of "Reacting to my Roots" I don't pronounce _Wales_ as he does: "Wells" :-/
Well done. ❤

It's not about school; it's about interest, about what you read, what you watch on TV, what you talk about with friends & neighbours, what knowledge you want to seek out. As Tyler has said, now with internet access to almost anything, people who want to can find out anything and nobody can blame schooling. As long as school taught the basic skills - reading, writing, arithmetic - you can get knowledge easy enough; and if interested in something then take a night course or on-line course. There's news channels on TV and documentaries, etc. etc. It just takes plain interest! Thanks, Tyler, for your interest.
I think school is part of it though...Canadian here - I remember around grade 6-7 we had to memorize all countries (names and locations) as well as Canadian provinces, provincial capitals, etc. As much as it is important to learn about your own country's history and geography, it's also important to learn about the world's as well. And there are things (such as these) that if not taught in school, a lot of people as adults aren't going to go out and learn for themselves in their own time
I lived in Asia for 20 years. I am British and worked with many many Americans who were polite, intelligent, globally aware, politically astute (Republicans AND Dems), and so on.
That they were not actually living in America may be telling.
There is still a strong tendency to put petrol into diesel cars leased by their companies.
Finally catching up with all these interesting vids. From a Scottish -Australian point of view.
Check out 'The WORLD according to EUROPEANS' for another fun ride!
Notice no Brits were on there. We know where everything is because we probly tried to invade it and then give it back 200 years later
Since they think continents are countries, maybe that's why they call their own country by the name of the continent they are in.
I really adore the way you take in all the info. I am so glad that you are getting more subs! Love the content xx
Thank you!
I used to work for a financial institution. A coworker of mine turned to me and asked for help. She was trying to set up a travel notification for someone who was going to Africa. The system uses a dropdown menu with a list of countries and Africa was not in the list. It took a few tries to get her to understand that Africa is a continent, not a single country, and that the caller needed to be more specific.
In europe we are all exposed to each others culture. They're all intermingled in daily life so we learn a lot that way and we can travel to experience many of them within 4 or 5 hours.
Nobody is responsible for the state of knowledge of his fellow countrymen. you are only responsible for what you know.
Unless, of course, you live in a democracy where your vote helps decide what kind of education is available to your fellow countrymen.
Apparently Canada is joining in… Yesterday a Canadian said to me oh I didn’t know Ireland was near the U.K.! And then though Jamaica was in Africa 🫢
The closer to the US border one gets, the ignorance virus is more prevalent. In Windsor ON and Surrey BC it's really critical. In North Van and London, the bug isn't so omnipresent. By the time one gets to Prince George and Saskatoon, kids can name every country in Europe. 😅
🤦♂-its really sad.
Iv heard the opposite about the Falklands, but that more because of News spin, the people dont get it nowhere near the UK
That would be the twerp that thinks Trump is right.

@peterwestcott749 correct is the word you are looking for 😅
Don't fret. I'm watching a UK major quiz show and your feed during the adverts. Someone has just answered the question 'which country did Algeria gain independence from?' with 'Africa'. So we Brits are striving to be exactly like the US!
But to be fair at least he knew it's in Africa I doubt a majority of Americans do
Meanwhile in Europe we learn EVERY country in the world, and ALL of your 50 states... NO problem. Are our brains different somehow?! 😂
This is simply not true!
@BarbaraNixon-h8b So you know what I got taught in school then? Or what do you mean?

I'm surprised the uk wasn't just labelled as London
A British tourist board once printed maps forgetting to add Wales 😂😂😂 I mean…that’s diabolical 😅
Wales is a poo place anyway
Presumably it was the English tourist board, which would explain them not including Wales. Although a far more likely explanation would be that this didn't really happen. Got any proof to support your shiite, thought not!
Always remember the first rule of lying. It has to be believable. Seems you forgot 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. PROVE me wrong
As a Welsh person I'd say that;s fairly typical. I was once on a British Airways flight and the magazine had a page highlighting the uniqueness of England. One example was the place name, Eglwyswrw, in West Wales. Most English people would have no idea how to even begin to pronounce Eglwyswrw. (egg-loose woo-roo) by the way.
@@glyndavies2334 it’s called Google pal…I’m not your P.A. 😂
The UK is part of europe. Just not in the eu.
At some point, it just gets sad.
Shortly after Russia went into Crimea in 2014 , a news organization in the U.S. went out with a map of the world & asked people to point to Ukraine on the map. There were a lot of dots in the right general area, but also dots scattered all over the the map including in the middle of the U.S.and some in water.
Surprised they named that many countries! They can't even say the word " HERBS" without butchering it!! Yes, there's a " H" at the beginning!!! LOL 😆 🤣 😂
Apparently the America pronunciation of this is how we brits also used to say it. It is us that changed it, where as American pronunciation of this and many other words we sometimes think they get “wrong” is historically more accurate.
It still bugs me hearing it - but they are “more right” than we are on that one.
The word herb comes from the French, the French pronounce it 'erb. So technically the American pronunciation is closer to the original way.
Wait until you hear how they pronounce Craig
7:02 Greenland is a part of Denmark
Is there no geography class in US schools?
Yes of course there is! Geography is a map of the States with absolutely nothing around it.. class over. 🍁😏
America basically, only teaches America.
@@mw-wl2hm Well it's BIG!!! I lived there for a couple of years and found most people to be witty, kind and smart in ways we are not in UK.
In fairness, all I can remember learning about in geography is types of rock, soil erosion, and lowest crossing points. I do not remember learning about the locations of countries of the world, or even counties, cities and towns in the UK (except for maybe one or two as part of the topic of a case study).
@rttmh You studied geology

we Brits could change the name of the English Channel to England’s big fucking pond, but we wouldn’t.😂
Sad but true.
The French don't call it the English Channel and never had. It makes no difference.

I wish someone did one of those interviews with me. I'd totally troll the interviewer by acting as if I'm thinking really hard and to then give answers like St. Kitts & Nevis, Palau and East-Timor.
In the uk at school we had world maps on the walls, and globes also and atlas books so children who are normally curious when growing up would look to find out where certain countries were, so eventually when you left school you would have built up a geographic picture of the world in our brains.teachers can't teach everything, so a normal childs mind if working correctly find things out themselves, and whatever age you are it's always good to learn.
When we arrive at our "ocean", we just need to look 20 miles ahead (France) and we can actually see our destination before we even set off to get there.!!!!!
Now I want to see you try one of those geography quizes to see how many countries you can name

I'd only been to about 10 countries by then and it really stood out as bad. I've been to almost 50 countries now, and it still stands out as the worst!
There is NO such country as "AMERICA."
I’m not having this. The world knows how intelligent most Americans are… just look at who they are nominating for their leadership in the cabinet. Not to mention the great leader . The stable genius.
TDS😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
To be honest, is not like the alternative was any good, it is just that between a bad politician and an absolute clown of a man, they choose the clown. Politics is such a joke in Murica that it is not even right to call it a democracy or a republic, it is just two groups of powers that take turn at being dictator at the interests of a bunch of corporations.
They highlighted Republic of Ireland as part of the UK 😮
That felt like nails on a blackboard to me here in Ireland.
Ireland is the name of the country which just happens to be a Republic.
It is not now nor has it ever been called the Republic of Ireland.
Ireland's the island, you need some way to distinguish the republic. I thought under your constitution it's actually called Éire?
@@WilliamSmith-mx6zeÉire is Irish for Ireland however the island is split between the republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Two separate countries with different governments, laws, police, military etc etc.
@@gerardflynn7382 Ireland is not as country it's a geographical term that includea two countries Northern Ireland and the republic of Ireland.
I'd argue that England (the oldest continuous unified nation state in Europe), Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland would be named as separate countries as well as the UK and/or Britain.
I saw on one clip with an american woman, when asked to name a country in Great Britain, she replied; "Big Ben"!
They added Papua New Guinea- an oceanian country- to Asia. And he added Central American countries- to South America- even though they are in North America
Tyler, I think that you took this well, in good humour, but truthfully it is sad as I'm sure that you're aware. Obviously it comes down to the importance placed on Geography in your schools.
Americans use the excuse of “well we didn’t learn this in school” all the time. But in truth, that’s the case for a lot of countries. Most of what I know of world geography comes from after school, or independent learning. If they wanted to learn, they could.
@@beckyybo0ob It's the same with me too, the majority of my Geography has been learnt by myself since leaving education.
Tyler you're a good sports 😊😂👍
It always shocks me how long it takes most Americans to even get the point of the videos they react to,
It’s always 10 mins in they go “oh okay so I get this video now!”
Lucky for Australians, the country is also a continent. We did it that way to make it easier for Americans to find us on a map :)
I am around your age Tyler but British. I can name all of Europe plus its capitals, and most of the countries in Asia, Africa & North and South America. I can also name and place all 50 States. Also Greenland is part of Denmark. I feel really bad about the US education system but at least you want to learn more now.😊
Whether its real or not or fun, in some point, you have to understand that this isn't fun anymore.
If you set this up in any town in the UK, there’s a strong chance you’d get similar results.
I'm surprised they know that much.
I've seen an interviewer ask "how many in a dozen" and multiple people not able to answer. (its 12)
Countries? Akrotiri and Dhekelia, Anguilla, Bermuda, British Antarctic Territory, British Indian Ocean Territory, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Pitcairn, Turks and Caicos Islands, South Georgia & The South Sandwich Islands, St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, Jersey, Guernsey, The Isle of Man.
What is more scary is that Americans have way more hours in the week to learn these things as there is no time needed for the obligatory English lessons.
Here in Norway I think students spend about 4-6 hours per week in English class. Grades 1-4 have a total of 138 hours of English class, 5-7 have 228 hours, 8-10 have 222 hours, and finally the 11th year in school has 140 hours. That is a lot of hours American schools can spend on other subjects.
As Jeremy Clarkson described, a rare book in America. "An Atlas."
As a UK resident I could tell you that there are 50 US states and that New York, Washington, Massachusetts are on the east coast, while California is on the west, Texas and New Mexico on the south. But while I know the names of many of the other states, I couldn’t easy point at them on the map.
I can't believe they didn't go straight for Canada and Mexico. I think some don't know what a country is so will name any overseas place.
Do Americans not watch the news?
they watch American news, so basically not. less than 10 percent of us news are about other things than themselves
Nobody is THAT stupid these days ;-)
When the Americans were sending troops to Bosnia, my friend who is in California, rang me in the middle of the night, forgetting the time difference,😢 to ask if we were much affected by the war. I’m in England!
Honestly, as someone in the UK who isn't particularly good at geography, or names in general, I could probably only double the number of countries on that list. Double again if you don't expect me to know where they are.
Greenland isn't a country either. It's a territory of Denmark.
In the UK, people above the age of 18 are "Adults". Ad ult.
In the USA, people above the age of 18 are "Adults". A dolt.
Oh gosh.....and when l was at school we had to know all the countries and their capital cities.....
How about we change the name of the USA to King Arthur’s big playground?
Tyler, is Geography taught in school in America? World Geography? This is not a trick question or taking a dig at Americans, I would just like to know.
To be fair when I did Geography at school in the UK it was all about what tundra and savanah was and how earthquakes happen. We didnt do ANY map study, which leads me to feel its about general exposure to info about the world thats lacking, not schooling.
Oh please. You do know that most of these videos deliberately find people who don’t know stuff, and leave out the footage from those who do? Best trick on the web! Yes there’s a lot of ignorant Americans but there’s also a hell of a lot of highly educated and intelligent people there too. I’ve studied there, lived there and regularly guest lecture at some of their best universities- it’s a huge population so it’s easy to find enough dumb ones if you look- and social media is where they congregate 😂😂 same as Aussie bogans they’re all over social media giving us a bad name- oh and PS yes Rainbolt is American lol. Talk about geography- he’s brilliant!
@@wobagukagreed! I was schooled both in Italy and England and in Italy, we studied maps but in England, it was all about farming & earthquakes. So I too think that it’s more about exposure in everyday life 🤷🏻♀️
@@dolceitalia5846 In Scotland, you learn about the world and its countries. Please note, education and teaching methods are generally not the same in England and Scotland.
@Yesser-Thistle73 I didn’t assume they were which is why I specified England instead of the U.K…I think England’s education system is appaling!
Tbh, I used to laugh at the memes about Americans being bad at geography. But I'm no longer laughing at all because it's not just in America.
I'm in France and I work in an association that gives lessons to middle school/high school students that face difficulties (grade wise or financially wise). In August there was a girl, almost 18, who genuinely was worse than some of those memes Americans. She called the South Korean flag the pepsi logo, she proceeded to ask where was Germany and even went "I didn't know Switzerland was a country!". I wanted to cry. She only knew Spain because, I quote, "Spanish men are hot". Which is not a statement I particularly disagree with, I'm just saying that remembering one single country for that is wild.
I stopped teaching her Arduino and did an impromptu geography lesson instead. She'll live without Arduino, especially when she wants to be a doctor, it not knowing where the UK or Germany are is just traumatizing to me.
The country of Asia broke me. I was keeping a straight face until then.
Eye Rack is where they buy their Eye Glasses I imagine.
"...Name three countries outside of America..." a much easier question that might get better results is "Name three countries the US is currently bombing the crap out of?"
Not one mentioned Cuba which is ironic .which also proves education system in America is shocking
Lol and I thought I was bad at geography
Most Americans I have met are intelligent enough to know the world due to being on holiday as I am.
Rome is Italy, New Zealand isn't Australia, because some I met were in the Military and the US has bases all over the world those are more savvy.
Off to Singapore tomorrow see if I bump into some more Americans.
I just reacted on a post that said Trump is signing an executive order to crack down on Pro-Palestine protests and revoke student-visa if you are in such a protest. Literally the first comment on that post was "Try do that in other countries". Been told in the thread multiple times that Murica is the only country that has freedom of speech.
No India, Russia, Channel Islands, France, Italy, Greece, Hungary, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Finland, Slovakia, Serbia, Croatia Macedonia, that's just off the top of my head
I think a big factor is that, the bigger the country you live in, the less you care, and know, about the rest of the world.
We don’t learn about Prime Ministers in Australia 🇦🇺 I never did understand why you guys do that day.
just for the recorded i am British and without a map or anything i was able to name 34 country which is better than
dozens of Americans
But neither are Brits taught about every country in the world at school. But many, if not most would be able to identify and accurately name many more countries than it seems Americans can!
Two things come to mind:
1. I kind of understand Americans not knowing this stuff. In the UK, we have 4 nations to learn about and then we can move on to other areas of the world. The US is SO big, maybe it takes your entire school life to learn about JUST the US? Maybe there aren't enough school years to learn about anywhere else.
2. The world map they were showing on the street was a different way round to the one I'm used to. I've only ever seen maps with the US on the left and Australia on the right. It was a bit confusing lol. I found myself thinking "I don't remember Australia being that shape" 🤣
The U.S is a similar size and age to Australia, both with large areas of unpopulated emptiness. Australians don't seem to be riddled with such ignorance.
Calling “uk” a country in the video is funny as it’s not a country, it’s a collection of multiple countries (wales England Northern Ireland and Scotland) and the person asking claimed it was correct😅
The world according to Americans is a bunch of terms based on the perceived appearance of the people who live in that part of the world "Europeans" being White for example, those same people think that the Spanish language from Spain a country in Europe is native to south America. They think Latin which is the language of Rome is a south American term. This is why "African" "Latin" for example are placed in front of the word American there. I grew up thinking Americans lived in America and then I got the interent and you guys have all these other words for people from your country.
