  • Discover the key differences between radar and ultrasonic level measurement technologies in this informative and engaging UA-cam video. When it comes to accurately measuring levels in various industrial applications, understanding the strengths and limitations of these two popular technologies is crucial.
In this video, we delve into the principles behind radar and ultrasonic level measurement, providing you with a comprehensive comparison. You'll learn about radar's ability to penetrate harsh environments, such as dust, vapor, and extreme temperatures, offering reliable measurements even in challenging conditions. On the other hand, ultrasonic level measurement proves its worth in applications where non-contact measurements and easy installation are essential.

Another significant difference between Radar and Ultrasonic technologies is in responsiveness to the target material. In both cases the returned signal to the sensor is a reflection from the object being measured. The strength of a reflection from an interface is based on effective change in impedance going from air to the object. In the case of ultrasonic you tend to get a good reflection from most flat objects whose acoustic impedance will normally be orders of magnitude different from air. Generally speaking you will get an equally strong reflection from a flat surface made of steel, plastic, drywall, or calm water surface. In the case of Radar technology the important factor for a material is it's DK value - related to how well the material conducts electricity. So a radar sensor will get very high amplitude reflections from a metal surface, while getting almost no reflection from a plastic surface. Strong echoes can be achieved off of a water surface, but you'll get a much weaker echo from a low DK petrochemical material. If the object of interest is high DK (like water), but there are higher DK obstructions present (eg. metallic objects nearby) then you will get disproportionately stronger response from the false metal targets compared with the water surface compared with an Ultrasonic technology.
