I find forums and social groups invaluable for intermediate to advanced reefers to explore new ideas. However, as a new reefer they are a lot to unpack :)
I'm all for discourse. I feel lucky to get into the reef hobby so late (had freshwater for almost a decade) that I've been able to watch videos from the same outlet where they have reviewed their stance at a later date because of new information presented - something I noticed going through BRStv's plethora of videos. Biased or not, I think that deserves credit.
I just wanted to pop in and say thank you both for your massive contributions to the reefing community. I’m new to saltwater (7 months in) your content has been irreplaceable to me. I hope to meet you both some day and eventually I hope to have a coral farm worthy of you to come and check it out. Thanks again!
Such a great podcast, thank you for sharing this. I work within the aquarium industry now, I’m a sales manager for a popular reef equipment manufacturer nowadays. I wouldn’t be in this career, pursued an education for this type of career, or most importantly been in this hobby if it weren’t for Ryan and BRStv, as well as the informative videos Than at Tidal Gardens produced. Grateful for you both, thanks for this podcast. It was a pleasure to tune in.
You guys are so right about the prominent people in the forums vs youtubers like you two. Almost all youtubers are way more approachable and better teachers than the old toxic forums. Recently got back into the hobby and people like you make it so much better. I even went back and checked if the forums got better too and........ Nope its as bad at it ever was. People ask questions and they are ignored or answered with the typical "That was already answered go dig up the 10 year old post.". Or another post I saw was someone trying something new and almost every post was people asking why was he daring to try something new. Then he was promptly ignored. Never change Than and Ryan. You two have done more good for the hobby than any unapproachable forum.
This is a great point and Ryan is right You’re “accountable” if your name and face is attached This is different from random names on a forum that regurgitate whatever they read somewhere else
I think reefers, and wannabe reefers, enjoy watching you guys because you are obviously honest and passionate folks seeking knowledge with an innocent wonder.
This is like the swan song video for Ryan. And unfortunately BRS UA-cam definitely will suffer for it for sure. Got so much info over the years from theses guys i really hope the future is not shorts. Great video guys hope to see more from both of you.
Awesome video btw. I just wanted to say that yes different species of torch will sting each other. I have several different/suspected species of torch that have not played nice with the others. I have personally witnessed them sting each other as well as seen certain torches stay retracted in areas where a different species of torch occupied.
Than, I am sure some viewers only want answers to their problems but I have to agree with Ryan on this one, I think most viewers want to KNOW it ALL and we ARE interested in what's going on with Tidal Gardens and BRS. Love, love, love you both!❤ Oh, and I have to add, Ryan, I think a lot of people love the deep dives, I hate shorts!
Me and Than have the Exact same taste in coral. It's very hard to be that person. It feels great growing things out in the hobby to spread the word of the reef hobby.
I met both Than and Ryan at reef trade shows Both of these guys are a massive net benefit to the hobby that vastly outweighs any shilling that may have happened for a product in the past And it’s not even close
As a novice who watches way too much content, I’d really like to see more comparisons of species. For example, I can find a ton of content on lyretail anthias. How do the other related species differ? Are dispar and ignitus the same in terms of behavior and needs? Are carberryi more aggressive or less? What about red lined or bimac? You can find this for fairy wrasses, but most other groups don’t have this sort of information readily available.
Hey I’m just wanting some guidance on a anemones propagation system. If you had a multiple tank system and different colour nems in each tank because of the apparent chemical warfare they could attack each other. So if you used a uv steriliser on the return would that stop it, thanks.
I'd be pretty sad if the future is just the 60s bites. I don't think you'd learn anything it would just be gulp and gone. Or it would have to be the combo. 60s clips taken from the long format. That however would be a sort of trailer. Maybe I'm alone in this but I miss the bigger deeper dives like 52 weeks.
Either it's just me, or it's that I was in a unique position to be introduced to the internet before it blew up and can objectively see where it's come before the current ADHD 'generation', but it saddens me that every outlet of information anywhere is putting significant effort into shorts. Call me ignorant by all means, but I don't think there's anything important that can be explained within that bracket. Don't hate the player, hate the game, but the longer the video the more I'm going to respect the information.
And Ryan bias to what products to sell based off what he would use is what caused me to buy from them for years. The buy-out of BRS has caused me to buy from whoever has the cheapest price & cheapest shipping. That buyout has not helped the hobby at all.
It’s disappointing, and I definitely see a difference in Bulk Reef Supply since the buyout. But, I don’t fault Ryan at all. He did what was right for himself and his family and he’s still out there busting his hump to benefit the hobby.
Ok I have to give a bit of pushback here. Ryan’s logic on not talking about GHL controller is super flawed. He has an entire series called BRS investigates. They deep dive into new equipment. By his logic he has tried each and every single light he sells on his site. I’m not buying it. He has legit bias against GHL controllers.
Thanks so much for the invite. It was very fun to share a window into what it feels like when a hobby takes off into so many unexpected avenues :)
I was looking for a protein skimmer for the back of my tank and I think that video came up. I bought the protein skimmer and I like it.😊
I've learned more about reefing from youtube than the forums. Ryan deserves a lot a thanks for all the content he has produced.
Forums are so un helpful

@@BRStv agreed R2R is a great forum and I've learnt so much in 2 years .

I will be at the Orlando RAP. Likely NY and CA as well. Just need to get Than there :)

The different approaches to knowledge acquisition can be summed up as "asking someone vs asking everyone"
This is a great point and Ryan is right

tidal garden content helps me treat the animals in the right way . light, flow and feeding
I enjoyed this because it was not just a generic reef podcast but was also about their lives as creators
This is like the swan song video for Ryan. And unfortunately BRS UA-cam definitely will suffer for it for sure. Got so much info over the years from theses guys i really hope the future is not shorts. Great video guys hope to see more from both of you.
My two favorite reefers in one spot. Great interview😊
Great Chat! really enjoyed it

good idea with this podcast 👏🏽

You both and Jake (RIP). My OGs
If I had a hero in the marine hobby, Ryan would be the one.

That was good!!!
i like the top 10 for brs
are you and Ryan going to Reefapalooza New York?

True I’m better off doing that,my family had a collection business in the past so the growing part is a new one for me.
Hey Than can micro Goni and normal Goni touch?
I don't think so
“Z list”???? Naaah. You guys are fkng rock stars. Thank you sooo much.
Thanks for the kind words. Knowing people value it is the fuel :)
Really nice video! i was wondering if i could help you edit your videos and make them more engaging as well as create short content out of them.
🦄

What does a guy have to do to get a chance to sit in one of those crazy chairs?
helps to be a cat person
I think your cats and my dogs should have a play date @@tidalgardens
