    Big and strong forearms not only look amazing and impressive, but theyre also extremely useful. For some reason that to actually work them has not only been neglected, but it has outright been a laughingstock.
    And its wrong. Forearm work is extremely important for a impressive and functional physique.
    What people dont realize is that it makes you look much more muscular. Forearms can always be seen, for example when wearing short sleeves.
    And they also generally make your arms look bigger.
    Plus they're important for performance, because you're never stronger than your weakest link

    I would be curious to understand the different training strategies for making a muscle stronger but not bigger - as a climber I feel sometimes that strength training produces larger biceps for example but not necessarily stronger ones.

    • @MrCmon113
      @MrCmon113 2 роки тому +16

      That's impossible. If the muscle is bigger it is also stronger. You could have a stronger muscle at the same mass if you replaced the slow twitch muscle fibers with fast twitch muscle fibers. But as for training, strength training is about mastering the movement and training your nervous system / mind to use more strength. That's how you get stronger without gaining mass. But if you want to be a lot stronger, you always need more muscle mass.

    • @seanbryan3466
      @seanbryan3466 2 роки тому +17

      You will always be limited by muscle mass. however, there are two really important factors that are often overlooked: (1) strength deficit and (2) cardiovascular system. Look into how to decrease strength deficit through nervous system training (this is what gymnasts and rock climbers (and ninjas) are known for). Also, better cardio makes recovery time between obstacles and between sets (perhaps between reps) much better. If you get more oxygen to your muscles and get rid of the CO2, you will increase "strength" (more reps, shorter time needed between sets).

    • @MM-yl2kk
      @MM-yl2kk 2 роки тому +8

      @@seanbryan3466 dude thanks for taking the time that’s the subtlety I was looking for and confirms what I have already started doing namely incorporating some runs into my training schedule. As far as strength deficit through nervous system training I will be looking into that.

    • @TheInsaiyan
      @TheInsaiyan 2 роки тому +3

      If you wanna maximize strength and insurance without significant muscle growth you have limited option.
      First you can increase muscle endurance (local work capacity of the muscles instead of cardio vascular endurance alone) with reps between 20 and 120 reps, 3 to 5 sets. The most important part for muscle endurance is to NOT utilize the eccentric part of the movement. As the eccentric component is the biggest factor in muscle damage and signalling growth and causing soreness.
      That will increase your ability to keep the arms under tension for longer, wich seems more important in climbing then strength.
      Next would be strength with very very heavy weight but low reps, anything from 1 to 5 reps, long rests inbetween sets. Like 5x5 4x5 or 4x4 or 3x3 etc. This will inevitably cause muscle growth no matter what. But its less efficient for muscle growth than a mix of metabolic and strength intensive rep ranges like 6 to 15 reps. For pure strength with the least amount of muscle growth i recommend keeping the weekly volume (sets per week) to be below 12 sets a week.

    Alright guys, miofibrilar hypertrophy is best achieved with high muscle tension (aka heavy ass weights), and hypertrophy overall is better (but not only) achieved through range of motion, BUT, remember that some joints are more fragile than others. When you train forearms, be it finger or wrist, if you want to go for heavy weights, I would recommend isometric work: grip hold, bar hold, farmer walk, db hold, holding your body to the pull up bar as long as you can, etc.

    Carrying cement bags and bricks/pavers is great forearm exercise, but also you have quite a lot of fast twitch muscles in the forearm and learning popping style dance is great for forearm muscles especially fast twitch muscles. Generally the way your wrist is turned will target different muscles in the forearm, hammer curls and most tricep exercises automatically work the forearms. Dips, pull ups and even military push ups (elbows touching side) will also work forearms well. But i'd say just buy yourself 4 pavers, hold 2 in each hand and squeeze tight so they don't slide out this forces your grip to stay open and wide and works the forearms and just hold them for as long as you can or you can carry pavers. The alternative is sand bags and cement bags and you're using all finger grip strength to hold them. Finger and hand grip exercises work the forearms too. Also go underwater and open and close your hands as fast as you can nonstop for about 1-2 minutes and your arms should be feeling it...another tip instead of doing pull ups, do rope climbs since the rope is much thicker and vertical not horizontal it forces you to use grip strength more. If you want it to be more challenging, then just buy a thicker rope since it will make you open the grip more and be using more finger/forearm strength just like doing pull ups on a thicker bar works the forearms more than on a skinnier bar
