- Enchanted Portals is a cooperative 2D platformer made by Xixo Games Studio, a Spanish studio of two people.
We're both avid fans of Cuphead and wanted to make a similar game, but always from a place of love, respect and admiration for the original.

Why does the trailer look more fun than the final game

i really want the is beta
It's because there's enemy/projectile spam rather than a mix of avoiding enemies and platforming. The main problem I see with most of the gameplay is that enemies DO NOT DESPAWN so when they backlog (which is quite often unless you stop and kill every mob before moving forward) which means that there's a lot of repetitive stop-and-go gameplay. If they had either a maximum cap for mobs on-screen or had they coded the mobs to despawn when off-screen then I bet people would've enjoyed this game much more.
i doubt the final game is the final version. I feel like they will update it to change most of the boring and bad stuff at some point. Hopefully.
It's because none of this is actual gameplay. There was never a beta of the game that they showed off here, instead this was all animated manually to show off the premise for the game. Easiest way to tell is with the flying section at 1:04, you'd never be able to move like that with a joystick in an actual game (and even if you were controlling it with a mouse for some reason that's still unnaturally smooth).
If the Beethoven-themed boss meant you had to learn its music in order to understand its attack pattern, that could be quite an interesting concept.

There's a whole game called No Straight Roads based on that concept, it is a really cool mechanic if done right
the animation in this initial trailer is actually really charming ... what the hell happened lmao
I bet the trailer was made in the animation program and the assets hadn't actually been implemented into Unreal Engine yet. For example, there's a smooth transition at the beginning of the Cerberus fight instead of an abrupt loading screen, and during the flying/swimming sections, you can see the player characters being smoothly tweened around the screen as if they're being controlled by keyframes instead of actual players.

Because the game have a much smaller development budget than Cuphead and was entirely done by two people. It failed both of it's Kickstarter attempt and was funded by some external investor(s) which I guess didn't give it much of a budget nor time to begin with.
Cuphead in comparison was eventually funded by Microsoft who gave the developer a huge paycheck for it's development and making it a limited exclusive on Microsoft own platform. Not to mention a lot of the art and animation work of Cuphead was done by some of the best people in the animation industry, whom was hired to extensively hand draw every animation in the game frame by frame which was an incredibly tedious and time consuming work to as it is.
And when the trailer was made they were working with flash, when flash stopped being supported in 2020 they had to start over with HTML

Yeah, in the game the boss introduction and transition is so fast you barely see them but in the trailer we can see clearly and have more time to appreciate.

To be fair, this game had a lot of potential for being a Cuphead inspired game.
It's more of a clone to be honest. There is a difference between taking inspiration and something being a clone of something else.
People are being really unfair with the whole "rip-off" thing. They are completely upfront about the Cuphead inspiration on the Kickstarter page:

I guess it's too much to ask that people read. It's supposed to be their take on Cuphead. Why not? It's not like the market's flooded with Cuphead-style run 'n gun games and these trailers have been promising so far. Wish the developers the best.

Nothing wrong with this at all. The developers have been up front about their inspiration taken from Cuphead. It doesn’t mean this is a shameless cash grab. Animation is demanding, tiring and meticulous work and they’ve clearly put a lot of their own creativity, love and care into creating something similar, but different. People like the golden age of cartoons. People like platformers. People like Cuphead. Why should they be discouraged for delivering more content to a genre that is in high demand. Just because they aren’t the first to do it? That’s foolishness. Also, it’s only two people working on this! I say god speed. Hope it works out well for them.
There’s a difference between inspiration and down right copying. I get they said it was inspired bye Cuphead, but even this goes to far. Add new game mechanics (other than the swinging), and try to make it more original. This is just downright weird.

Por ejemplo, en el caso de que no vieras el tráiler, uno esperaría encotrar un alien en el UFO, o al final del nivel de la ciudad, encontrarte en la oficina del jefe de la mafia de lo pollos esos
Pero que te encuentras?, una vaca que nació por la interacción vaca-alien (ve los retratos en la parte de la persecución) y un pollo en una fuente milenaria en medio de un parque o donde estén xd

Yes, it's so stupid everyone threatening and saying that their project is rubbish, they are doing their best to fix the problems of the past.
Compared to cuphead, the frames look not that smooth, but consider that as a two men job, it's still awesome work.

Looink No it wasn’t all of the backgrounds were made by Caitlin Russle, the animation was split up between Jake Clark, Chad Moldenhauer, Tina Nawrocki, Joseph Coleman, Dee Johnson, Hanna Abi-Hanna (yes that’s his real name), Thomas Smolenski, and Danielle Johnson with more hopefully on the way. The styrofoam models used in some backgrounds were done by Ali Morbi not even counting the game programmers, the font specialist , and one ink and clean up person (*GASP*) can you see its not just 3 people.
Even though I absolutely adore Cuphead as it’s my favorite game of all time this type of Animation takes so much effort from only 2 people just wanting to make a fan game, can you please just give them a break

This game actually does quite a lot of original things. Getting hit by different attacks can have different effects. Cuphead usually just gets hit and then.. He dead.

this isn’t that bad. a rip-off imo would take everything the original game had and rebrand it. the bosses are unique themselves, but the gameplay kinda isn’t. the swinging door and water mode is pretty cool tho.

Look most bosses are unique but some like the cow boss wich is a copy of junk yard jive and the devil boss. The games art stile looks ok but isnt as good as cupheads. And the gameplay, its the same as cupheads, and im not a fan of that. But most bosses are original, art stile is good, but i hate that they complitli copied the gameplay.

I’ve actually spoken with the team behind the game.
First of all, these folks are VERY kind and approachable to fans and address ALL feedback.
I would NOT say it’s totally identical to Cuphead. I love the sorcerer theme, the eccentricities, the VERY detailed backgrounds, ALL characters’ adorable designs.
In other words, you can clearly see it wasn’t just slapped together.
The team would probably consider me among their most loyal fans. I’ve made them a piece of fan art and even a COSPLAY suggestion for that female main character.
I’ve reassured them they are JUST FINE for having inspirations. In fact, they’re so savvy on this genre that even the recognizable aspects appear fresh and novel.
Game staff, kudos once again, and keep up the beautiful material ❤️❤️❤️❤️
The quality of the work is high for sure, but the originality that they do add does not do it any favors in assuaging the criticisms given.. Inspirations are taking bits and pieces of something to make it your own. For example Sonic's character design takes inspiration from the same old rubber-hose aesthetic that Cuphead and Enchanted Portals does with its gloves on character's hands. However, it is still a completely original creation despite that. This however is more like Cuphead with a bit of dashes of "wizards and portals" here and "wacky bosses" there, than it is a simply something that was only in small part inspired by Cuphead. The things people have been saying about the game don't mean to dismiss it entirely and ignore what it does well, and ignore the things Enchanted Portals does that are indeed original, but people wouldn't be saying this about the game if it and Cuphead weren't so closely aligned in so many ways.
Let's see...1930s style game that has a run and gun, boss rush game play. News flash, just because it looks different, doesn't mean it's original. Yeah, it has a different theme, doesn't mean it's original. The boy's attack shown in the trailer looks exactly like the pea shooter.

I just love how often the map and the enemies interact with the characters. It's like when a boy gets inked, he turns black and glitters, as if he had really been dipped in ink. Or when a girl was crushed by a stump and she began to walk flat. And when the cosmo cow made them both dance and they actually danced. And that's not even all the interactions I saw in the trailer. I'm sure in the Cuphead they would have just taken damage instead and that's it. Of course, these are not all the advantages of this project that I noticed in the trailers, but I just decided to point out just such little things, because thanks to such little things you can see how much love and effort the developers put into the game. This is not some kind of parody. This is a standalone project inspired by another game.

This game doesn't deserve the hate it receives. They made it clear that they want to see more cuphead-esque games out there, and they made it even more clear that this game is inspired from Cuphead.
It's this and the game seems to have it owns twists and original obstacles and bosses as well, not just a straight up terrible Cuphead ripoff. Alongside that, Cuphead did not invent it's artstyle, it's inspired from old cartoons in itself. Overall not quite sure why so many people are complaining.
There is a difference between inspiration and a rip-off. This is the 2nd one.

@@extrezYou know. If it would be inspiration the weapons would be unique. What I got from the trailer is that these are the same weapons with different textures. It uses the same mechanics. The dash animation is 100% the same. The swimming levels are obvious "inspiration" from the flying levels. Besides the bosses this is the only change they made. I think its obvious. 🙂 PS: okay watched the trailer again. There is flying as well. Swimming is a new addition amd grabbing onto vines. Thats it. The cow boss works like the giant miniboss at the end of a run and gun level. The cow boss has a phase shown in the trailer very much like the devils 1st phase. If you cant see after this that its an obvious rip-off then I dont know what to say.

@@inventionscreator8875 There is a difference. They dont use the same textures and animations as this rip off sh!t does. And the key phrase is in your comment. LAUNCHED NEAR TO EACH OTHER. So those games cant be rip off of each other because games like that take years to make. But this game was announced waaaaay after Cuphead and uses the same assets with some differences like character design, map design. The weapons are literally the same weapons from Cuphead just with different textures. Please open your eyes and see. :)

It is good to see the plans for the game is still ongoing. It seems ridiculous to think that we live in an age where we see tends like “hero shooters” or “Battle Royale” be a dime a dozen but apparently one “animated side scroller” is apparently where lines get crossed.
Comparing this game to Cuphead would be like saying Street Fighter and King of Fighters are the exact same game. Yeah there are similarities, but it isn’t like we see the exact same enemies. But I guess they are fighting frogs and a ship, so close enough...
Honestly, it will be great to see the final product and then see how it stacks up. Hopefully it could be a start of the “animated side scroller” genre and we can have contra-like games that are better than what Konami can produce.

Anyone coming here to check why the animation in this trailer looks better than the actual game , turns out this trailer was actually fully animated, none of this is actually gameplay or coming from the game itself. They got someone to animate this “game trailer.” Its more of a proof of concept . Hence why the game looks far worse. To sum it up, they made this trailer first, THEN they made the game and tried to resemble the trailer.

this game looks fun and is not a rip-off of cuphead! it looks like an inspired game as it says in the description and the attacks look similar but some of them are unique! this game seems really fun as cuphead hasn’t had updates for uhh years… though a dlc is coming, this is also great as it’s something different and unique

Despite the backlash it got, I really wish they kept the original animation they had for this trailer. This game had so much potential and I definitely would’ve given it a chance. I hope they at least remake the game entirely or at least fix up the mechanics
