- "UNPLUG!" is the first lesson in Richard Williams’ book: "The Animator's Survival Kit". Richard added some drawings to the lesson, illustrating what happened one day he went to see Milt Kahl.
I've always found those drawings very inspiring and the story was just screaming to be animated. The audio is taken from a Richard Williams’ masterclass video where, luckily for me, he re-enacted the story!.
PS: I did not listen to music while doing this.

I've just read Don Bluth's memoir, and he confirms Milt Kahl was this intimidating in real life.
"Long on talent, short on patience" is how he describes Kahl.
Seeing Milt's work, I can only agree that he was probably as Don described.
Like, seeing Sher Khan from Jungle Book turn his head while speaking, being all jolly, its all just awesome.

Apparently, Walt himself would occasionally be on the receiving end of Milt’s short temper, but he always took it on the chin because he admired the man too much.

Ironically most employers nowadays won't accept someone for a job if they knew this fact.
Literally every human in the world is not smart enough to think more than 1 thing at a time and do it good.
The people who "multitask" concentrate in one thing, stop, then concentrate in another, stop and so on...
I tried drawing without music, and it got me feeling frustrated thinking about people, were to the point I'm rushing to draw and everything was starting to look bad. I put music on to mute the voices and started to focus again. This "advice" doesn't apply to everyone!
Reading the book and watching this is sooo goood! Love this animation a bunch!

Its great, but its very lengthy and time consuming. Its why most individuals, let alone, major studios, have favored tweening and smear shots rather than in between cell animation. It saves everyone involved time, money, and (in terms of the animators themselves) sanity.
I say someone should develop a studio that specializes in hand drawn animation, like how Laika specializes in stop-motion animation, where this kind of animation is encouraged, time is given for the animation to be its best, where people don’t feel like they have to animate on lower frame rates, and the release date for a movie is determined by when the film is actually done, and where the gap between finished and release is used for marketing.

I’m usually used to seeing Milt as a comfortable, poised, relaxed and calm old man who’s always happy to talk to you about animation or even draw a few sketches for you, but this is an absolute far cry from the Milt I’ve known from the behind the scenes documentaries and personal interviews.
You don’t wanna mess with Milt Kahl… he’s a force to be reckoned with.
Well he was pretty focused on his work.
Even in those interviews I thought he looked kind of intimidating.
You haven't seen him answer an inconvenient question in that interviews, his face transforms and the eyes become menacing.
The non-technical parts of the book where Williams talks about becoming an animator are my favorite.

Anybody masochistic enough to animate in ones deserves my respect.
It's not masochism, it's a style choice. Good animation in 1s is pretty fluid but in 2s still can be fluid.
i love how Richard is animated in the style of "The Thief and The Cobbler". it's a really nice reference :)

I remember reading this story in the animator’s survival kit! So cool seeing it animated :D. He had a lot of respect for Milt and even though he was very heavy handed and to the point with what he said, he dumped a lot of valuable wisdom where he went. Rest In Peace Milt Khal and Rest In Peace Richard Williams, the man who’s illustrations and story inspired this animation.
He yelled that phrase about music and it changed Williams’ perspective and how Williams worked. He stopped listening to music and had all his brain power focused on animating.

This particular bit isn’t useful advice; just his personal preference. I, like most people, don’t get distracted by music. Classical music maybe, becaue it doesn’t have a consistent beat, but I listen to lofi or something like that that aids concentration.
I need to be getting to it more since I want to do 2d animated shorts .
My personal favorite part is when he strides over at 0:07
The walk is unique and the little flip out that he does with his foot is just perfect

Tbh, I envy animators who do animation without any sort of interruption. It's best becuase you can focus more on what you are doing and get less distracted.

What’s interpolation?
@@pokaay3163 Interpolation is a function of video editing software that FORCES animations/videos to have a higher frame rate. What it does is also smear the inbetween frames and make it look horrendous. There's a good couple examples out there like Noodle's "Smoother animation ≠ Better animation [4K 60FPS]" where he goes into deep dive over how it offends the animators and artists both.

Interpolation it's a tool, but on its own it can't do much. It's the job of the artist to know how to use it.
(But also yes, it does shit on the artist if you just put a previous animation that didn't have it in mind and then upload it)
@@cractor6307 Well your latter comment is mostly what I refer to these days. Some use it as a shortcut, or just not bother at all with how it affects things. The video I sourced even explained why it needs to involve the intent of the artists otherwise it is downright offensive.

Honestly, this feels like Richard Williams' own animation! The lavish and fluid frames per second, the lanky character, etc
A curious and enthusiastic guy who just wanted to learn everything possible about animation... his journey is very inspiring, i'm grateful this book exists. He was very lucky to have these mentors, and later friends, Ken Harris, Richard Kelsey, Milt Kahl, but more than that, it shows what someone with passion and courage can achieve when they want to. "If you ask questions, you will find out what you want to know. If you're lucky enough to ask someone who knows."
Oh my God, I recognized the scene before they started talking, you really did it justice. Thank you for the amazing quality you bring us.

If I don't listen to something while animating I go crazy.
Same with me. My mind always has an unlimited video if library to play if i dont listen to music while i work. These mind videos are titled "remember that one embarrassing interaction you had years ago?"
Mr. Robert was the same until he used the advice:

Oh, and he used a mix of the pose to pose and straight ahead. Read the book "Animator's survival kit" , it's fascinating ^^
The moral: Do whatever you need to to get yourself in the mindset of working. Don't listen to someone else's workflow completely even if they're the best. You're you and however you need to situate urself in an artistic mindset to work is the right way. Listen to music. Milt is a crotchety old man here lol
I tried "unplugging" like he describes in the book. For a few hours it works, but after a few hours the silence itself becomes more distracting than anyone could claim music and podcasts could ever be.

One thing I'd like to point out about early animation compared to today.
An animator in the 50s would be doing all of the drawing, sketching, and revisions of the character to simply get the movement right. They would not be doing, say, the details of the characters, the lines and inks, or the colors.
Doing the initial stages of animation took a lot of planning, reworking, and focus. Playing music in the background would have been discouraged, and I dont imagine the old record players or radios had very good quality headphones to go with them. I also can't imagine hauling your record collection into an already crowded animation office.
When the art was ready to be inked and colored, that work was passed onto women artists of the time, who generally were the only ones trusted with that role. Often a radio was playing in the office, because it was very boring grunt work, coping and tracing and matching colors.
So you can listen to music when the focus heavy work is done, and when you need to do tedious grunt work like line art or coloring, put on something that will help keep you focused on your work.
“I’m not smart enough to think of more than one thing at the same time!” is very weird for me to hear as someone who suffers from the exact opposite problem. Regardless, this is some truly incredible work!
This has been the most fluid animation I've seen in a while

These animations kind of remindes me of Disney's movies made in the first 2000s such as Fantasia 2000 and Atlantis, very nice
Woah, this is just stunning! One of my favorite moments in the Survival Kit, now animated in an approach that follows what the book teaches and does it incredibly close to what Williams might've done himself. Never would've thought this would be a thing that exists! Just like his work, you've filled this with a ton of the nuance and fluidity he strives for. Makes the whole thing really come alive.
Fantastic work man! This is the kind of stuff I'd include as inspiration.

I love how if you watch this in slow motion, you can see the small details of how rich reacts to milt as he goes off.
I REMEMBER THIS ILLUSTRATION. It scared the crap out of me, hahaha! I always have to listen to music when I animate, but I do find that Milt is right on one end: when I really need to focus and not just do simple tweening, I have to turn the music off first.
I am a student of drawing and i just made this "stupid mistake".
It ain’t no stupid mistake; it just depends on the person about what helps them focus more on their craft, music or silence, it doesn’t matter since it doesn’t have to be just one way of doing things…everybody has their own way and that’s what makes them work, and unique too, to put it
You absolutely need to find a way to share this with Richard Williams. You even found a way to homage Williams' style. The Student Richard Williams is very reminiscent of the thief from Thief and the Cobber. It's that pointy curious face and the way you lead the character's direction with it. Gorgeously done.

(But seriously from the little I know just making your back straight isn't the do all, it's more important to get yout back into movement when taking breaks, it not moving should be the main issue. So don't forget to take breaks)

Judging by the texture I´d say TVPaint, but that´s just me guessing.

Either that or Toon Boom Harmony since they are using that in Spa Studios. I´ve not seen a textured brush that convincing in toon boom though with all those vector lines.

Reminds me of Eric Goldberg's (he worked on Genie from Aladdin) style of animation.
The kind of movement indeed does have that flow and beats to it that Eric uses a lot.

This is truly magnificent. I remember the original comic strip by Richard Williams leaving its mark on me since my university years. But still, to see it brought to life with such fluid and dynamic character movement is breathtaking!

By the way, why is most of the book just talking about the different ways to do a walk cycle?
The book doesn’t hold your hand through everything, it only teaches you what you need to know. It’s not just about the walk cycle, but the momentum that needs to be carried through every movement. Everything in animation needs to feel like it has weight behind it.
walk cycles are one of the hardest things to animate.
Y'all! even in richard williams says so, it doesn't mean that he's right all the time! sometimes people work better listening to music and it helps get people in the mood! it's your call really, but it doesn't hurt to give everything a try!
