this is an amazing antenna for portable or temporary installation. I have the VHQ Hexbeam for my base station but may get this one for portable. Thank you for a great video
You know, I really appreciate your doing this on UA-cam. I have had this antenna for quite some time and haven't put it up yet. I'm glad you were willing to show simple mistakes and all. Keep up the good work!
That was awesome Hayden! I had already lowered my Hexbeam "ChuckyHex" lol and I think Jason and I were pointed at you but When Charlie and Frank got on the Hex I think it had rotated a bit , the antenna was just floating and not secured in a direction. We will have to take a look at the bands and pick a weekenf or day that we can both get our and try multiple bands. This was the first time I had set mine up and it still needs some tweeking, but I was happy how well we both did!
That looks like a lot of thought has gone into the design to make it very user-friendly for setup, and ease of transport with the cable carriers and how it clips together.
Woooow what an Antenna. Congrats on your Purchase, Hayden. To me this is one of the best Documentary Videos you ever made and published. Keep up our great Work & happy Sunday. 73 de YFUG 💯🔔🔔🔔👍🙋♂
I've been looking forward to this video for a while - the BuddiHex looks like a great piece of equipment. Have you considered doing an interview with the designer of this antenna ? I ask because when you look at the design and attention to detail show there has clearly been a lot of thought put into the design. I could not say how many coffee's went into it, but the end result looks fantastic, the sensible use of colour coding parts, the 'toggle' connections, etc. must have taken a while to resolve. Great video !
Thanks man! Should've let you know, you could've come up to have a look. I'll ask Chris (When he's not so busy) if he wants to sit down and have a chat!
supergreat, thanks for the video . was a bit surprised to see the air bubble of the spirit level going upwards in australia, didn‘t expect that! 😂😉 seriously: if it wasn‘t for the price I‘d get me one. good dx and all the best.
I use Velcro to loosely tie the coax to antenna Also always make sure the segments are fully inserted into the hub and the clips pulled down toward the center hub, clip side down , before attaching/bending the spreaders to the top of the hub On uneven ground extend the tripod legs fully, then retract the bottom segments 2", you'll find it's easier to raise one leg to level it than to lower the other 2
Hi Hayden, thanks for this video! I imported my BuddiHex to France and had to pay around 270€ of taxes. I got the Sportube locally so basically 20% of import taxes. I brought the antenna with me to Mexico but unfortunately had an incident when bringing it up and am now waiting for the replacement parts from Chris. I should be able to get back in the air by January 31st, hopefully! I will definitely not extend the last segment of the mast and also put the guying rings a bit higher to avoid having the antenna dance too much. Let’s see if we can have a VK-XE QSO soon! 73&DX de XE1K - F5VLQ
Yeah. That top section can really go bending over if it’s up more than a foot or two. Hayden does what I do with the pre-guying before putting on the antenna. Much safer, especially since I’m usually by myself.
I pre-raise, pre-guy the mast, weight the base w 3 water jugs, and never raise the top segments more than 30cm. Also, be sure to used the widest tripod stance. Mine toppled once before I got smart, Chris mailed out replacement connectors before I left the park!
This is a really well considered system. It feels like a good value....attempting a DIY version would cost me so much more and likely ending up with an inferior finished product.
Brilliant antenna.. for rich Hams 😬. I like the design and the performance but its quite noticeable anywhere you put it. How does it perform mounted at ground level?
I want to see what happens if you stack two on top of each other but one concave up and the other concave down. Also if adding floating bits of metal in the beam path can steer it. Floating as in suspended by non metallic ropes and moved into a position lioke a director on a Yagi.
Quite a nice looking antenna system. I am a bit jealous though. You got KC5HWB in your log before me and we live in the same state. 😀 I guess I should have hit him up on 2m at his SYP event last spring.
You might need a different mounting pole to put it on - I wouldn't trust the tripod permanently, unless you did modifications. The antenna should hold up.
Congratulations! I was wondering when will I see a channel named ham radio dx (which every single video should be about dx) do a single DX. Congratulations again, please continue posting DX! 73
Relates to import duties/tax. Depending on what sort of day the customs agent is having it can get very expensive. Here in ZL they will charge 15% GST (Good Services Tax) on the total cost of the imported item, including freight, plus documentation and release fees.
As ZL1PO explained. Apparently there is a customs exemption for some antennas/aerials but I couldn't be bothered chasing it up as I was dealing with people who weren't real smart. They claimed they couldn't even contact me, even though my phone number and email was clearly written on the parcel!
Hi Hayden, I was listening for you with 5 elements pointed your way on 10m. I knew you were there, but not strong enough for a contact. Tried long path, which was slightly better, but still not enough to make a contact. Stay safe. WJ3U
When I saw the short for this I glossed over it thinking that the US stations were going to be on FT8 but how wrong was I... The performance of this certainly makes the Hustler 5-btv rather average!
NICE a Hexbeam is always good and easy I do have the TRAFFIE HEX THE 1 WHICH WAS ON BOUVET IN 2000-2001. Have just put it back up after my move and as Bouvet is going to happen wood like to work them with the antenna which had been there and mad it back, I have had it up all over New Zealand the last 21 years and still strong and works GREAT as always, 73, Pieter ZL1PDT/ZL1LIG /ex ZS1PDT/ ZS6PDT

Thanks mate. Yes, happy to own our mistakes. Learnt a lot since the other day when we shot this! Next time it will go up much easier.
They did a really good job designing that antenna. Oh, Sir Chuck was booming 😮
I know, right? Chuck on his hex and me on mine!
I have a hexbeam as my primary antenna and it's amazing how well it works.
That was awesome Hayden! I had already lowered my Hexbeam "ChuckyHex" lol and I think Jason and I were pointed at you but When Charlie and Frank got on the Hex I think it had rotated a bit , the antenna was just floating and not secured in a direction. Awesome Chuck! Yeah for sure and a good test for your ChuckyHex too! Nice one
ah, I'd love to watch it now 👍👍👍👍

a great addition to the channel and your station Hayden that should make your contacts a lot better and take you to the next level ,

Nice hex there Buddy.
Thanks 👍

Thanks Evan and yes! The bubble goes the same way in the Southern Hemisphere :D
Thanks for the contact Hayden, I was using 100 watts on that contact with you, with my DIY 3-element yagi for 10 meters beaming in yr direction
That is awesome! Thank you for the contact, good stuff!

Yet another cracking video Hayden, instruction's are for whimps
Haha thanks Richard
great demo Hayden
Thanks!

Thanks Emilio. As luck would have it I worked Mexico on 6m today!
Thanks for the tips too! Those pesky import taxes hey!

I emailed the company over a month ago about buying one and never got a reply. Would be a great addition for my Hawaii POTA adventures.

Great to be your first contact on the hex. John VK5Y.
Thanks John, indeed you were, awesome stuff. Big signal!
A portable Hills Hoist, well that's what I tell the misses when we go away.
That's the best way... although... maybe only undies will be able to be hung off it, nothing heavy :D
Putting color coded ends on the directional bits of that antenna would make pointing easier I'd think?
Anyway, great vid! 73!
Thanks Lionel
Can you provide a swr plot for all bands? Even buddipole doesn´t mention it
Do you receive the Perth Roleystone repeater
Excellent!
Yeah JoBrett - I'll get you on air SSB soon

Would be easy if you had a crane!
Since the Coriolis effect is opposite in Australia it should be the same as the toilet swirls...😂

Haha! He just so happened to come back to my call, although I did spot myself on a group!
That is so cool!
So far, I love mine! I put mine up, pointed it Northwest (Utah, USA), and called CQ DX on 10 meters, and got Japan with a 559 signal report! DE K7RLN
Nice!!
If these works as well as they look.. wow
What is the gain for each band for this BuddiHex Antenna in dBi or dBd ? I could not find this data from their web site !
As it’s a 2 element beam on all the bands it would be about 4-5dB of gain over a dipole.
Perfect for a smaller backyard where you don't want to keep it up all the time or for a rental house.
Yes, I do know at least one other who has this up permanently
Hayden, what do you think about the antenna be used for a permanent installation? Cheers Garry VK2GAZ
You might need a different mounting pole to put it on - I wouldn't trust the tripod permanently, unless you did modifications. The antenna should hold up.
Thank you Hayden .....@@HamRadioDX
So what did the ATO or Customs slug you in import duty?
Too much
I think it was $300 AUD

I think Hawaii to California on 10 GHz counts as DX. If so, this is indisputably about DX. ua-cam.com/video/gVcl8IwT0jQ/v-deo.html
I had to do a double take when you said bl uddihex antenna.
Haha!
Where did you get the sports bag from?
The Sportstube came from Buddipole too. But you can purchase it elsewhere. It's called a Series 2 Sportube Ski Case
@@HamRadioDX Thanks Hayden.
Great video. Does the antenna include a tripod, or is that extra? 73s G4ZRS
the antenna and mastwerkz mast are separate line items... we have both.. 73 de AA6X, W5NAE, and N5CSK
Geez bro! An Aussie being called a kiwi ! Well I guess you are from the "South Island" ! hi hi
Oh nuu bru
Why would an antenna be a problem getting thru customs???

@Ham Radio DX Too funny, as I've had the same here in Canada. The spammers can find me easily enough, tho!
Now, if it had 40 and 80....
Sounds like a descent antenna ah bob

Thanks Don! Next time for sure
Slick but I don’t have the money. We’ll I do but my wife, …well… you know
Notice how when the skip drops out your antenna doesn't make any miracles? Its more to do with conditions than your buddyhex
When I saw the short for this I glossed over it thinking that the US stations were going to be on FT8 but how wrong was I... The performance of this certainly makes the Hustler 5-btv rather average!
Turn on the NR…
it looks like a laundry hanger
Nice antenna, but "Why's it in the middle of a sheep paddock?!”
That’s our radio clubroom grounds
I would have put the antenna together first. It's harder and the most time consuming. And read the instructions first.😅
20 meters of speaker wire and a Matchbox will do the same trick
Good to know
Great video! de W2CSI
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
