      yeah, i think half of it is miking tho. cellos normally dont sound bad or grating. the modern one sounded horrid

    I love how baroque instruments usually look brand new while modern instruments do all they can to look worn and interesting 😂😂😂

      That's because the "modern" ones are often older ones that have been altered for a modern setup. And the baroque ones are often in fact newly built, just as they would have been back in the day.

      what does "baroque tuning" mean? I'm a pianist and saxophonist so i never have to worry about tunings...

      ​@@imauz1127Baroque tuning is A=415 and modern is A=440. Which is weird, studied classical cello in 2 parts of the world half a cross the globe, everybody uses Baroque tuning...

    I didn’t think the cello bridge was that big on a modern cello, I always thought it was like the violin proportionally

    It's a lot warmer! Always loved the baroque instruments. Sometimes projection and force is not everything; although quieter, baroque instruments had very rich harmonics.

    If anyone is interested, look up Phoebe Carrai’s interpretation of Bach’s Cello prelude no. 1. It’s a beautifully done on a Baroque cello. The tones are so warm you might have to “crack the window just a hair” as my dear mother used to say.

    I think the baroque way is also holding the bow more at the center, it gives you more control over the tone

    In the past, people played the cello on their feet, and there is no swollen part at the end of the cello because they used to play the cello on a stool, and the reason for the short fingerboard was probably to avoid bending too much towards the end.

    I really like how near the beginning of the piece theres the note b in that low octave. It sounds so cool on the baroque cello, it has this low powerful kinda sound

    The baroque sounds more hollow to me but both are great but that deep note the baroque is so satisfying

      That's because of the warmth given by gut strings! (for reference, the modern one has steel strings which sound tinnier)

    The baroque cello also has catgut the original string before traditional metal ones were introduced!! They are especially great for when you are playing pieces from the classical era! It wouldve been amazing to see you compare haydn !

    My mother was a violinist in orchestras in numerous states and 3 countries. I've been an huge classical music fan and always preferred Baroque instruments. it's a more pure sound with more texture.

    Baroque cello has gut strings as opposed to steel strings, therefore the sound is much softer.

    Whoa! The deep sound on the baroque one! But the modern has less of that "scratch" or whatever it is, I dislike. That's why I like the cello better than the violine. The violine squakes and scratches more, imo.

    Call me skeptical, but I'd love to hear the strings of the modern cello on the baroque, since if I am seeing correctly you've got gut strings on the baroque, which are naturally warmer and have more depth than steel strings

    Nice. Your distinguishing process however seems little... well... first, nearly no baroque bridges survived. You will find a modern bridge on all baroque cellos. Second, fingerboards dtto. Endpins? Same thing, accessory.

    It's really odd how I find similarities to saxophones in the differences between these two. Modern saxes tend to run cleaner and sound refined with less issues in the sound. Vintage instruments have this richer sound with more harmonics but are a wee bit squirrely with intonation and sound production.

    🟦... All else be'n equal in circumstances & equipment settings,..then it seems to me that the Modern Cello has a Warmer, Fuller sound.
    ... The Baroque Cello Is Louder with a "thinner" more Strident upper mid-range, as well as a rather harsh coarseness to the low end.
    .... I Much prefer the Modern Cello.

    grounding the cello steals vibrations, same reason the neck rest makes violin sound worse!
