Katie, Derham, former Strictly Come Dancing star said while the song is a 'classical banger' she could see why some people may see it as problematic.

Rule Britannia is such a wonderful song. We will never, never be slaves! Superb.
Britannia still rules the waves - on the Olympic boating lake, and the sun still never sets on the British Empire, only these days we call them dependencies and most are quite small, but some are much larger than powerful Singapore, the mighty atom which rules the waves in SE Asia and used to be one of our colonies..
Apparently we are not allowed to say 'murdered', 'died' or 'suicide' either. We have to say unalived and self checkout instead. Dumbed down language to spare the 'feelings' of dumbed down people.

Have you completely forgotten - or did you even know - about what Labour did in the 1970's. Or what Blair did in his tenure from 1997 to 2007? What an incredibly dumb comment.
@@apollomemories7399 Austerity and Brexit started with the Cameron. Correct? Managed decline started earlier but accelerated under the Tories. For example, Police numbers were cut by about 20,000 between 2010 and 2019, and child poverty has risen significantly since 2010, with food bank usage reaching record levels. In general, successive Conservative governments oversaw or contributed to a decline in public services, infrastructure, and social support systems, either through austerity, underfunding, or privatisation. The Labour government cannot carry out many of the election pledges, as the previous government left the economy in such a ruinous state.
If you would like to deny this and claim that everything is Labour's fault, then go ahead provide support for your claim.

My Grandfather and his brothers were born in Tonypandy Wales, they were all working in the coal mines at 9 years old, not because they wanted to but because to make ends meet they had to. They lived in a mining house 2 up and 2 down, boys in one bedroom and parents in the other, they had no hot water, only a coal fire for heating, a tin bath, and an outside toilet. When you talk about slavery you need look no further than early 20th century Wales! These were people born and bred in Wales. That in my honest opinion was slavery and it was home grown.
You want to ask your ancestors to check their white privilege (and tell them to knock off the black-face, as well, while you're at it).
Nothing at all unusual about the housing fcilities as you described as you would find exactly the same all over Britain. However, nine year olds going down a mine is awful. But, what does that say about Welsh society? I always thought it was the most backward part of UK, that and Cornwall.

Does this also refer to the fact that anyone - a slave from another jurisdiction, perhaps - who set foot on British soil automatically became a free person?

If I never heard the word 'slave' or 'slavery' again uttered by a middle-class grifter I would be relieved, but I guess it's only in certain contexts that it's 'problematic'; we are still going to be battered about the ears with it every time we switch on Radio 4 or visit a museum.

Rule Britannia and the National Anthem have some uncomfortable lyrics in them for starters, as do many of the 'patriotic' songs of Empire. That doesn't mean we should ban them though I am in favour of finding a more appropriate National Anthem. Leave Rule Britannia alone. Let them belt it out at the last night of the proms. Not fussed. I don't take them seriously.
