How Does Weather Affect Walleye Fishing

  • Today we are out fishing for summer walleyes during a huge storm front. The temps dropped 40 degrees in 24 hours and fishing is definitely tough. In this video I talk about how weather affects walleye fishing. Fish are obviously effected by millions of different variables. Most of the time we have no idea how or why fish location or attitude changes. In this video we go out and catch some walleyes under a big cold front and I talk about how I tackle big weather changes.

GREAT VIDEO AS USUAL!!! How about a video where everything goes wrong with your boat, while on the water with 30 mph wind gust . This weekend my battery died, no trolling motor or spot lock. live well pump puked!! I drove to shallows letting the wind blow me back out . I motored back and forth limited out in 2 hrs jigging a minnow and a 4" swim bait. Loved your Video on changing up baits

Thanks for making this video. Going up to Cass lake in Minnesota for a couple days. Weather is unpredictable. You can’t change the weather but you can change the way you fish. Tight lines man!

Wow. Another practical approach to something that concerned me... the weather. Find the fish ....catch the fish. Makes sense. I have watched all your videos and have had the best walleye fishing of my life on my local lake. Even managed to land a 43 inch pike on a slip bobber. Thank you so much for your informative videos.

Excellent presentation, as usual. I've generally caught the most fish when its pretty calm, even flat calm. But I don't think that's because of the *fish;* but rather, how easy it is *to* fish. Easy boat control and such. Especially trolling, vertical jigging. or staying on a pod of active fish. The tactic that has a clear advantage on windy days is drifting, like your slip bobber/leech rigs.

Bass love to ambush there pray. They hide in the ledges etc. If I want to catch Bass I fish rock piles. Find any rocks under 4ft of water to 18ft. Simply toss a worm on a hook, with or without a bobber! A light rain really seems to make them want to eat, some of my best days were in low chop with a light rain. Sucks to be in the rain but man, it keeps u busy!

New sub here....where yah from? Definitely want to get into walleye fishing, Grew up in MD doing predominantly saltwater and brackish river fishing, and everywhere I've been stationed I've done the same. Not much freshwater with exception to occasional bass and/or crappie fishing..Stationed in MI now and really wanna get more into it....I've caught them and damn near every other freshwater fish but never targeted them. Glad I found your channel

Thank you Tom. Apologies if you've heard this a lot, but I think one of the "whoa" things I see you do is continually stick your finger(s) in a walleye's mouth. I don't think my office hands could take too much of that haha. Thanks for the great content.

I am a wildlife/fisheries biologist. My major professor, who also loved to fish told me that when the barometer takes a nose dive, it effects the fifth cranial nerve, the lateral line, of a fish and it gives them a “headache”, and they bury their heads in the bottom until it stabilizes. I have found that to be true over my 45 years in the business. Just FYI to those who might care about the science. Fish on👍

Is there a way to effectively use slip bobbers when you can’t locate the fish with side imaging but they’re scattered like this time of year? I only have a Helix 7 Chirp GPS DI. Would I be better sticking to trolling spinners?

Tom, thanks for all the video's I fish walleye up north with some older fellows. We never used slip bobber floats but this would be a great technique. I notice you use some of them with the weights, these are hard to get online so I don't want to make error. Can you give me a specific size that you use and do you prefer the weighted vs non-weighted. I have to find these online. THANKS !! Your videos cost me a lot of money stock piling Kalin's google eyes and plastics... These are sold by inches in the weighted ?????

Walleyes are almost always between 1 and 3 feet on bottom in these shallower depths. So Its not super specific.
