I've had this book for years and keep returning to it, as I am a work in progress. I also give it as gifts. Don't Take It Personally is my challenge area. BTW, his sons are amazing too and continue their father's work.😀

I am going to watch Luther's documentary. I've seen him four times, and I miss that lovely man. On a concert level, I am basically a heavy-metal fan, but he had my heart.

The documentary makes you appreciate Luther's vocal gifts, talent, and hard work.

I introduced Don Miguel Ruiz to my family decades ago and I am so glad I did. 🌿
His writing is food for the heart and mind. 🌿

I first read "The Four Agreements" in 2011 and years later, I got the book on Audible. It has become a repeat read over the years.

Karen Hunter, I have to admit that you remind me of a time when I had to choose an elective mini course in high school back in the day. I decided to choose "Sociology" from out of the blue in the moment. I couldn't believe how much that mini course taught me in three weeks that I had been out of touch with during that moment in time. 🏫 👩‍🏫 📚 📖

I've been practicing these principles for years and I've benefitted greatly from them. In addition, I read and digested "The Mastery of Love" by the same author. These two books have given me a much more grounded in reality approach to life, myself and relationships. I am more genuine, not having to explain myself, clearer about what is "me" stuff and "not me" stuff lol. And a big one is saying what I mean, meaning what I say (there's a difference) and confidently managing the awkwardness of interacting with others. Criticism? Offense? Sure I still feel feelings, I just have far more clarity how to manage that, and respond in my own best interests.

Happy to see you utilize this powerful tool. I use this daily with my coaching clients. It has made such a difference in their leadership abilities. It is also my guiding principles to live by. Once it is embodied, it becomes a way to live and hold others to a higher standard.
It is hard to not take things personally, at the same time, it results in so much less reactive actions because it is not always about you and when it is be responsible for your part in the situation.

I'm afraid I do not and have never understood "do not take it personally" - people will target you with personal attacks and do their best to smear your reputation, and sometimes those crabs-in-a-barrel are members of your own family. It may BE more about their personal dysfunction than anything wrong with us - especially if they're literally spouting lies - but it literally AFFECTS US PERSONALLY, and anyone close to us who has been groomed to listen to that other person's account of events without even asking us to find out if there might be some other interpretation of what happened, or sometimes a whole other FACTUAL ACCOUNT of what actually happened - they will HELP the malicious person to damage our reputation, which we might need for, I don't know, professional survival. I'm not sure how much time the original author spent talking to (and believing) victims of narcissistic abuse and scapegoating by family; the "institutions of mental health" (and I don't mean the hospitals) can barely keep up with or have resources to combat this phenomenon
