They also forgot to mention Ratchet and Clank 1 and 2 music is actually sampling and mixing of an already existing album! The music of Ratchet and Clank is not original music lol I love the series but you have to acknowledge this fact!
@@DANCERcowHuh? The soundtracks use a lot of samples but all the compositions are original. That's kinda like saying Van Gogh didn't make original paintings because he got the paint from somebody else.
The reason for a lot of the multiplayer tracks being reused from Going Commando is because the development for the multiplayer actually began even before the game was finalised, there was a rush to get it out purely for the historical reason of being one of the first online multiplayer console games, a week before halo 2. Which meant a lot of cut corners.
You forgot Annihilation Nation's boss theme which is a repurposed Pokitaru Dogfight theme from R&C1, but quite honestly works really, just as well in it's new home. I think the Kerwan remix is unbelievably cool, it gives not only a sense of much greater danger, but also the feeling of familiarity while making me get the sense that the city I'm visiting is older now, you can feel the age of the level as there are more layers to the main part of the track now, with the bass taking a much more noticeable role, it really makes me feel like the two main characters are seasoned veterans, which, they are at that point.
The other reason the Snagglebeast boss theme fits so well has to do with the plot: In RaC 1, it plays when we've had that last little "never meet your heroes" moment with Quark as he betrays us. In RaC 3, this plays at the crash site of where we suspect Quark died, only to find out that he still lives (betraying everyone's trust). One of the best reuses in the whole game imo.
I really love the PS2 Ratchet & Clank games & the music by David Bergeaud really is just memorable. When I think of Ratchet & Clank in general, I always think of the classic Metropolis theme from the first game. Considering how good the music was from those games, makes me wish he composed the score for Ratchet & Clank Future Trilogy on the PS3. It's not just the same without David's score.
The only Future trilogy game he didn't compose for was A Crack in Time. I think starting with Tools of Destruction there was a shift towards more orchestral sound, which in my opinion made it less distinct than the PS2 games. The Metropolis theme in ToD is absolutely amazing though
Holy damn lord, this is one of the best videos that i've ever seen, the script is amazing, the voice and camera are insane, and the editing blew my mind, dude, this is waaaaay under rated, and the topic and opinions are very good, i agree with them!, i hope that you get a shitton of views from the ratchet's fandom and from other people, keep on going these content is nuts!
Damn I’ve wondered for years, where in RaC UYA I’ve heard similar music to the Aranos Releasing your ship. Now I know. Thanks for that. Great video. Keep it up. And btw I want that shirt.
God.. The music from the original R&C trilogy is just S O G O O D. It hurts when I listen to it for some reason though. Think it's nostalgia, and realizing that those times are long gone and even if I replay them, it'll never be the same..
Sick video! Never thought someone would take a look at such a specific topic, it's nice to see the fanbase is so dedicated. One thing I'm surprised you didn't mention is the fact that the RAC1 OST is entirely in Mono - the only Stereo tracks are a couple demo tracks and the UYA remixes! I think that might be why, as you said, some of the original tracks feel a bit more "flat"
Great vídeo. Slick editing. Keep make content like this. I think you may be going far. The UA-cam algorithm is already helping you since this video got suggested to me out of nowhere.
Yeah. The most important about summing a track to mono is: Whichever content is NOT in the center, gets turned down. Like, by default, not by choice. Thus, if a melody sits in the right of the stereo field, it's gonna be more quiet in the stereo version!
From what I understood, RnC 3 was made under heavy crunch with a very troubled production. That's why you see so many less alternate paths, no grindrail sections etc in the game. It'd make sense they'd want to cut corners where they could including in the music. Could of course also have been for budgetary reasons. Less money spent on new tracks is more money for the rest of the very strained production.
they did it because R&C3 developement was rushed that's why it's also the shortest game in the series, and some planets are just Multiplayer maps, looking at the insomiac museum inside the game u can find a lot of cut content that they removed just because they didn't had time to finish the game
Interesting vid exploring the differences between the reused and original tracks, but I think most of the reasons for reused tracks was due to the time constraints with creating the 3rd game. Also, I really liked that you recorded outside. It was a pretty location and it really differentiated you from other video essayists.
Just discovered your Ratchet and Clank videos. I've always reflected on the aesthetics and intent behind the original quadrilogy and am really happy to see that there are people out there that understand and appreciate the series in a similar way. You've done David Bergeaud's composition a great service and am really looking forward to more content.
i think its funny that when i was like 5 years old i spotted the quarks hideout and crash site connection. i thought i was such a genius at the time detecting those two as a kid
You've been selected by UA-cam's algorithm. And I've never thought finding a RAC soundtrack recycling video. Always knew for years about this and I've never thought someone else noticed it.
Great video! Also, at 8:23 you mentioned the guitar riffs - I'm not entirely sure of their purpose either (albeit they're a fantastic addition), but I personally associate them with the Tyhrranoids, since they appear in the songs for Veldin, Rilgar and Kerwan, and all 3 levels have you defending against a Tyhrranoid invasion. Having said that though, I'm not sure why they don't appear in similar levels, like on Aridia.
Yeah it's kinda strange . Since I played number 3 first, I actually think they fit in very well with where they were placed, but it sure is bizarre that it's the only game that reuses old songs. I can understand reusing the themes of blackwater city and metropolis since you literally go there, but for the rest I don't really understand.
It makes sense when you realize the other themes were good ones "wasted" in really short sections that most players complete in just 1-2 minutes. I'm sure David realized that as well.
i think it makes a bit of sense they didnt remix veldin. because under drek velding already was under attack, also its a way to send the message of "this is a COMPLETELY different game from R1" and bringing up rilgar but specially metropolis after gives you this "oh no dont worry we have not forgotten" and it feels amazing to be fair
Sneaky throwing in techniques like lag jumps and neutral long jumps, shows you were once a speedrunner, nice If only you'd done a whip jump on Zeldrin or Metropolis lol Also greetings fellow Kiwi
What a video ! I love the fact that you're dealing with non-spoken subjects about the franchise ! And the video is really well made with good stuff. And beside that, we're feeling that it comes from a fan of the serie, reallygood job !!
this channel is really underrated ! I hope you get the recognition you deserve with the quality of your videos, I'm glad youtube recommended this video to me
A lot to agree and to disagree with, but in general the analysis was really great and you managed to get your point and your opinion very well. I will definitely watch your other videos and hope your career skyrockets from here. What baffles me is why isn't this video in the order of thousands of watches. Fantastic script, well thought analysis, excellent editing (gotta love it when people talking about music lets you listen to the music itself so you can hear for yourself exaclty what is being discussed). Here's hoping this gets so much more around. Cheers!
The Rilgar theme is such a banger! Why does it have to sound so evil and dark? I don't know but it fuckin slaps! And the Metroplis theme might be one of the most iconic pieces in videogame-music history! Damn i have to replay UYA!
Holy shit. Been playing the trilogy over and over again for over one and a half decades but never realized the similar songs. How?! Excellent analysis! Even rung the bell, the highest honor I am able to bestow. Looking forward to more. PS: where can I buy the shirt? :D
I have a video suggestion for you: The last Ratchet & Clank project that David Bergeaud worked on was PlayStation Move Heroes. I would be interested in the ways that game's soundtrack references and draws from Bergeaud's previous work on the series.
Actually I'm pretty sure Ratchet 3's Veldin track is a remix of Ratchet 1 just a heavily remixed one. It's the most changed remix by far, however some riffs from the original song are definitely there. The most obvious is the heavy bass opening of R&C1 is matched in R&C3 by the melody that comes in around 0:24. It's just that the instruments and their placements in the song are completely different so it's way easier to miss, but the chord progression is definitely the same.
I love these edits of Metropolis and Blackwater City soundtracks, they bring a new life to them. And I really appreciate their decisions to bring back music from the first game, because all the tracks they chose were ones we only got to hear once. For example, shooting down Drek’s dump ships on Pokitaru in the ship came with AWESOME music, but I never even heard it as a kid because I was too busy shooting the ships. When they brought it back, I didn’t recognise it. Also it took going to the Insomniac Museum and playing the list Vid Comics for me to find the grind rail music from Batalia, which is one of my favs now. It was a good decision so that those songs didn’t get lost and forgotten. Also where did you get that shirt?????? Awesome video
Excellent Video, I don't know why they used music, or but I have two theories and one only applies to a specific song, I think they didn't have much time to compose more songs because of due to the release date of the third game (I don't know what year it came out) but in the case of nation annihilation, it's because their specific song is too wasted in the second game Apart from being one of the songs that I liked that they have reused it, anyway, simply epic
I guess that the reason Aridia's music was new and Rilgar's was reused was because Rilgar fit the multip- I mean single player stuff in the story more than Aridia's did
This video was way better than I was expecting. Thought it was gonna just be some A B comparisons with some whining about lazy design. Pleasantly surprised
Not technically "reused" like the other tracks in the video, but Holostar Studios' music is an arrangment of Planet Boldan's Silver City music from Going Commando.
You forgot UYA's Vidcomic 1 Special Edition reusing the first game's Batalia Rail Grind as well as the Annihilation Nation Arena Boss fight reusing the Pokitaru Dogfight. Awesome breakdown otherwise. I would have liked at least a mention of how the Snagglebeast/Zeldrin songs both have to do with Qwark.
watch out! Since no official release of the ost exist, tracks like Rilgar might aswell be the same, your source simply encoded them differently. Also, enable half pixel offset in the emulator!
You went to the beach to rant about the Ratchet and Clank soundtrack.
I love it! Earned a sub :)
What you referred to as *"more dynamic range"* is literally just the song being in Stereo. The OST for R&C1 was in mono for some reason, whereas 2, 3, and Deadlocked's were in stereo.
Stereo is not the only difference that give the depth to the dynamic range, the mixing is just way better
