I think it's so important to compromise, for everyone. No one ever changed their habits because they were shamed and bullied and excluded for their habits and traditions. Leading by example is going to leave people more open in the long term than trying to exclude them. Personally family is more important to me than what they eat. There's 364 other days in the year I can use to talk about food choices.

I agree with you. It’s not worth fussing over who does or doesn’t eat what. Let everyone eat what they want and just enjoy the day.

Totally agree. Make cooking easier for yourself at Christmas and then you can relax with your family and friends. We're doing exactly the same. You cook from scratch all year, so have a break xx

Thank you for VLOGMAS!! I’ve been watching and I think your intro is the best one out there. And I want to tell you how PERFECTLY lovely you are. You being you is what I love. I suggest to disregard people that leave judgmental comments as really it is a reflection of how they are themselves. I think this world is a much lovelier place thanks to what you share so freely with us. Merry, merry Christmas 🎄

I’ve making a great wellington, I say that because I’ve already pre-made two fillings and will defrost over night and construct on Xmas morning and they taste yummy . Main filling is blitzed mushrooms , toasted walnuts with lemon zest, loads of Xmas herbs and celery carrot onion garlic, soy sauce, paprika etc. The other filling to go in the centre is a cashew nut and cranberry. After years of having plain nut roasts I think a lot of the same texture can be a bit heavy; a variety of separate layers inside a wellington makes it a more interesting eat. Having it in puff pastry with a red wine and onion home made gravy. To avoid the Xmas stress everything is pre home made and frozen.

About Christmas dinners and veganism: I‘m lucky because my dad is now vegan and my mom vegetarian. My partner‘s family eats meat but they don‘t cut the meat in the table - they have it in the kitchen. I think it‘s so considerate that they think about me so much! And always make me vegan treats ahaha I‘m spoiled. In Finland we eat different vegetable “stews“ at Christmas and I love them!

I cook for all of us every Monday night and just embrace having my family round me. My eldest kids and their partners are very respectful of my values and will often bring little vegan treats for me. Also, diets are your own choice. If wanna be vegan, be vegan. If you wanna eat meat, eat meat. Just be respectful of each others choices. This is coming from a vegetarian of nearly 30 years (I just don’t like meat/fish), and did eat meat as a kid.

Christmas is about family first and foremost so I agree with you not the time to argue a point. Alex shopping 😂 I love your tintin top 😍.I just did my Christmas food shopping all prepared from our local supplier it’s just me and my husband this year so we decided to get pre-made food a little more expensive but makes it feel special like we are eating out. I have to work the Boxing Day so don’t feel like slaving over a hot stove.

I understand how important is to respect people's choice on food. I used to spend Christmas with my parents and relatives. I was the only vegan one and my relatives would cook just a few simple alternatives for me and treated me like 'the different one' in the family, which was ok, it was Christmas, you just enjoy the day. Then one year my relatives forgot to cook for me and I had to eat something that my cousins had in the freezer and quickly baked in the oven, while everyone else was having a huge party. Lately I have been invited for Christmas with the sentence: 'you bring your own food because we don't know what to cook for you and we want our meat.' Fine. I am spending Christmas with my mother, cooking vegan food, enjoying time with her and our pets. I respect people's choice, but when you said 'I don't want to ruin people's Christmas', I thought: what about my Christmas? What about the animals that have been killed because I respect people's food choices? Well, I am not going to ruin nobody's Christmas, human and no-human. I stay at home, feeling nice and cozy. Happy Holidays!! (Ps. I wish in Italy we had all those vegan options at the supermarket...I miss that when I think about the years I lived in the UK).

    • @fotographiefraeulein
      @fotographiefraeulein Рік тому +7

Feel ya, and also ruining someones Christmas because they can't eat meat one day out of 356 days a year might be the bigger issue I guess. Makes me very sad, but I also have that in my family. I totally get what you are saying and Maddie too wants everyone to be happy over Christmas as she said, but for me this would be a boundery at my house I think. Why do we as non-meaters are expected to except this in our house once a year, but from them it can't be expected to not consume meat once a year. I understand Christmas is special etc., but out of respect? Like you said, this is for real making Christmas less happy for me. It also annoys me a little when eating meat vs. not is compared like its the same thing, as they weigh the same. When meat eaters can eat everything still what is being served in addition to all those alternatives Maddie showed. How can this not be enough for one day? Whereas vegans are sometimes left with the leftover food from the freezer like in your case or with the dullest food, because veg doesn't seem to exist anymore it seems. Sorry, a little rant :D and I'm speaking generally here, just for the record

I used to get all that passive aggressive nonsense form my ex mother in law. Not knowing what I ate etc. making out as though I single-handedly ruined Xmas because I didn’t eat animals. She once made me a lovely nut roast so she did know.

We have 6 of us for Christmas dinner and 2 are vegetarian (I’m one of these) and rest eat meat. They have meat and my hub and I eat the veg. I’m doing us a cauliflower cheese and we have lots of veg. I enjoy the trimmings so things like bread sauce, cranberry sauce stuffing etc.
I’ve been a vegetarian for 52 of my 55 years of life and it’s just feels so normal to eat what I eat and others eat what they like. I’ve never pushed my beliefs on others and it’s ok to me if we have a mix of preferences around the table - that’s life hey! And when I was little there really wasn’t many non meat eaters around - they cater so much better now for non meat eaters in society.
We don’t eat canapés Xmas day, we have our Xmas eve, like a tradition every year.
It’s interesting to hear what others eat at Xmas. Loved the bits you got, all looks yum! 🎄

The amount of vegan alternatives in the UK is mind blowing. It’s fabulous. For me personally I used to accomodate the non vegans in my family (they would bring their own ham etc) but now I want everyone to respect that this is a vegan house and the amount of good food we have is in no way depriving them so now it’s vegan only. Last year even my adult nephews ate huge amounts and had seconds. We have 3 different vegan roasts, baby potatoes in butter and mint, quiche, mushroom and lentil Wellington, various salads like pasta etc, gravy and for dessert I always make trifle which everyone loves (you wouldn’t have a clue it’s vegan) and also vegan brownies and vanilla icecream. And some years Xmas pudding. There is just absolutely no reason I need to have dead animals on our table. Each to his own I know but just explaining our journey with Xmas.

However my husband and I are vegan and pescatarian. So far I have always cooked some meat not wanting to upset anyone. Quite a feast :) two comments for it. First - you can never have too much hummus :) Second - not sure of the point of doing your own stocking... seems like an opportunity to have one each and exchange so it's a surprise for each of you. Nothing wrong with the way you're doing it but there's no surprise for either of you, which is kind of the goal. Without the surprise seems like you may as well toss it all in the kitchen as per normal.

We are aggressively non-vegetaraian as a Hindu Bengali community, and my friends make such a noise if someone is vegetarian it’s shameful. Right now on the 30th we are meeting somewhere ultra-non-veg and so I’m going to definitely share her food if it’s a large portion (here they often serve portions for a group of two or three or four). Very very rude and alienating.

Today I learned that Americans and British people spell pajamas two different ways. :)

Omg, I always thought it was pyjamas in both countries. I was wondering why Americans pronounce it with an "a" :)))

You are very lucky to be in the UK! You wouldn't find that vegan selection here in Canada.

I’m cooking for 14 on Christmas Day. I’m the only vegan but I am cooking meat for my family. They totally support my diet choices and I respect there’s. Everyone is different and I think some vegans get a bad rap due to the fact they try to ram veganism down there throats. I would Love to everyone to be vegan but the truth is, everyone has there own life and ultimately its down to them to decide, not for me to persuade them. My children however eat a lot of vegan food just because they see me eating it ( and some they don’t even know lol ) ❤

Omg, I am SOOOO jealous of your food options in the UK! If I had that, I wouldn't bother doing everything from scratch. I find hosting and cooking for holiday meals in general so stressful and overwhelming. On a different note, am I of the belief that you can't force people to do what you want, it only creates resentment. If they want their meat, let them have their meat as long as they bring their own food. I would find it problematic and totally disrespectful if they were to ask me to cook non-vegan food for them, I saw someone in a Reddit post complaining about their family asking them to cook meat for them, as they always had vegan options for her when they hosted. That's so different, you're asking someone to do something that goes against their beliefs and ethics.

It can be so overwhelming can’t it! The pressure is high! Love that we have so many great options. I agree, I follow this mentality with my audience too and it seems to draw more people in to cooking vegan food even if they aren’t vegan. It’s more realistic!

@@MadeleineOlivia I completely agree. Drawing people in with the power of example and sharing delicious food is oftentimes much more powerful than trying to convince them. Even adding more vegan food to an otherwise omnivorous diet is such a win! P.S. If you tell me you have vegan Pandoro, I'm moving to the UK now, haha. I want to make that for New Year's, but oh boy does it sound complicated for my baking skills :))
