Actually, I've mentioned my thoughts on fungi and soil pretty recently over the summer...but it was an off-UA-cam exclusive episode. As a result far fewer people have watched it or know it exists lol ...but that's why i omitted that here.... here's the link since you asked (good comment & eye!) : www.theweedtube.com/video/magic-mushroom-storage-mushrooms-in-soil-your-other-questions-26790
@@LexBlazer All though I do thank you for the video link, I am left less then riveted. The pictures you highlighted were in fact not a mycorrhizae relationship forming fungi, but harmful species. The term "mycorrhizae fungi" is the general term for species of fungus that symbiotically form bonds with plants roots through literately growing into the root tissues and exchanging nutrients for sugars. The fruiting bodies you had shown are all harmful species that will directly compete for nutrient uptake with the roots, several being capable of small-scale chemical warfare to keep your plants roots at bay. Been keeping the same culture of several species for over 5 years now and using it in all my grows from citrus to veg to cannabis. The difference is palpable, being able to physically look at your root systems and notice the large change is remarkable.
Sorry Lex, but you're completely missing the point of "live" soil. It is NOT "alive" unless *specific* mycorrhizal fungi and beneficial bacteria are present and healthy. They are the basic building blocks of living soil systems. Without them, any "soil" is nothing more than a different style of hydroponics medium.
Fey Frost do you grow in pots or in the ground? I had been reading recently about how mycorrhizae amendments are useless in pots when grower feed their plants with liquid/powdered feeds because as a result the plant and fungi have to reason to form a symbiotic relationship
I used to be all about the soil then I switched over to hempy buckets w a 50/50 perlite/vermiculite mix inoculated with recharge (humic, fulvic, mykos, kelp, bennies, carbs) and im never going back. You just have to be on top of the ph no room for error there. Its lightweight, cheap, pests do not like it, its easy to sterilize, cannot over water it, easier to flush and reusable indefinitely.
I've been doing only soil amendments for the last half year. "live soil" if you want to call it that. I gather local soil made of peat and decomposed plants and pH-balance it with lime, add eifelgold for micronutrients, perlite, then add powdered or pelletized nutrients for NPK (and Mg if it wasn't already in the lime). It took some time to dial in but I now have the correct EC. But it's a lot of hassle. I will move towards the Lex Blazer way: prepare a good medium as before but feed the NPK using nutrient solution. I expect more consistent results.
What is your mixture if you dont mind telling? Im new to cannabis growing and curious of a basic non overcomplicated way to make a soil that will get the job done without mixing a million expensive ingredients. I understand NPKs and which additives add each macro but would love a basic rundown or guidance on small grow(10 plants) mixtures for soils that wont cost a bunch without buying premade ones. Not growing commercially but just my first try/experiment for personals.

One of my favorite videos brother! No matter how many other trolls want to complain about "mycorrhizae", to me it's kinda a given and no brainer as to when you add it to your super soil mix(all organic). Like you said pick a good base soil first, and add usually worm castings or chicken poo works great I hear too or both and perlite/verm for better soil aeration, sometimes peat moss(but I heard something bad about adding peat to soil but cant remember what it was right now), coco, which I've never tried but going too soon and amend it with stuff like bat/bird guano, blood n bone meal, some Dolomite or Epsom salt and I always like to add a good amendment for the "micro" nutes as well, and should be good! Now I guess my question would be is it better to go ahead and add your microbes like an amendment (Recharge, n roots terp tea are good ones) and powder form like GW as well but never used that! Or add it like you do fish shit and just water it in your soil, which I know would take longer for microbes to break it down to food available for the plant so I guess what would be the best option here to introduce your microbial life into the super soil??? Thanks man! You've been quite helpful over the years my fellow Gromie!!! 👍💯👌😁🙏✊✌
Instead of using epsom salt.... let your soil cook for 3-4 weeks and then do a slurry Ph test on the dirt. If the Ph is too low, add dolomite lime which will release magnesium over time and raise/help buffer the Ph.
Thanks Lex - certainly appreciate the info. Some good recipes to start with and as we evolve as growers we all come up with our own take / favourite ingredients. Namaste
what do you think about rabbit manure? we are making our own supersoil and using our rabbit's manure as part of the composting N and in part with wormcastings for the teas for our 4 outdoor this year in 25gl pots, any thoughts or suggestions?
This vid makes it sound like I should've failed miserably, considering I'm a first time outdoor soil grower (growing autos), & I made my own mix, based on my own intuition, which was Canna Coco, perlite, composted chicken manure and mature personal compost (about 3 years old), all in equal parts. I amended this _heavily_ with Gaia Green dry amendments (All-purpose and Power Bloom- full dose of each), and transplanted immediately, and watered with a dose of Cal-mag. Because I did not allow for any cooking time, I figured why not kick things off with good ol' Alaska liquid fish fertilizer, and Morebloom, & so I fertilized the following day. (So yeah, I'm just doing everything wrong so far: transplanting autos into rich compost, that's unnecessarily amended & over-fertilized). Following this, I simply continued to fertilize with Alaska a week ahead of their recommendation, but dialed back the fish each time, and increased the Morebloom. I did not use any dry amendments other than when I made the mix. I applied Cal-Mag only 6 or 7 times throughout the grow. After the initial transplant, we had unusually low May temperatures, and a week of rain. If overwatering was even possible with my mix, it would've happened here, but it didn't. Meanwhile my other potted plants around the yard were drowning in their stupid, soggy peat-based mixes. Then the heat wave struck. I know overwatering can be an issue in high temperatures, but I knew it wouldn't be an issue with my mix, so I kept them *wet,* knowing that my plants wont drown, & evaporation from the soil will help keep the root zone cool. Anyone who tries replacing peat with coco in their mix should quickly realize how superior it is, and anyone who goes back to peat after trying coco must have a screw loose or something. Why risk overwatering? Why risk the hydrophobic condition & compaction created if peat dries out? Why risk the acidification of the soil, and have to fart around with lime? But how are my plants you may ask? PERFECTLY HEALTHY, aside from the pH shock induced when I fertilized (fertilizer mix was pH 2.8, and I didn't bother correcting out of pure laziness), but that self corrected within a day or two each time. Soil has been a steady pH 6.5 throughout the grow. So I've over-fertilized, and been watering almost daily with plain ol tap water (pH 7), & had no overwatering issues, no deficiencies, no toxicity or burning, and I've got frosty colas the size of my arm, one with a tennis ball sized nug on top. And I still have 2 weeks to go. Amazing I grew anything at all, let alone _thriving plants,_ with all these "mistakes" I've made.

Yeah you _can,_ but now you're complicating things, and may build up salts in the soil, requiring you to pay attention to your runoff. Growing in live soil lets you set it, and forget it, if you stick with organic fertilizers.
Sorry Lex, but you're completely missing the point of "live" soil. It is NOT "alive" unless *specific* mycorrhizal fungi and beneficial bacteria are present and healthy.
