      Gamers Nexus Its the amount of rendering units they have makes them struggle in 4K. They should have moved to 96 ROP's and those cards would perform a lot better 😊

      Ali A it is going to run exactly like an a Ryzen 7 1800x.... So close it won't matter for most people. The only difference is more pci Express which the majority won't need and a slightly higher base clock.

      Chris Fokjohn, really OK, everything I READ said it was 150 watts per 8 pin and 75 from the socket or 75 from the 6 pin, after some research 300 would be pushing it for what the wires can handle

      Its not a complete offset (unless you're just running a bunch of space heaters). Your AC/Heater has a coeficient of performance greater than 1. So for example, in the summer, you get say 4w of cooling for every 1w of electricity spent. In the winter, you actually get 5w of heating (that 1 extra watt is from the 1w of energy you just added).
      Also you should probably leave the temp control the same setting, since it should regulate itself (it just won't be running as long).

    Great video Steve, good to see that you've really tried to get the best out of Vega. I along with a legion of others were so hoping that it was going to be much better than this, although the 56 is looking like a fairly decent buy right now once you take off the crypto premium. I'll probably end up buying one regardless just to support RTG, my R9 290 has aged very well on a 1440p monitor. I wont be getting a reference card though, my sons R9 290x reference is so load and hot.

  • @james2042
    @james2042 7 років тому

    Vega 64 has the higher memory voltage if I'm correct, which lets you hit higher memory frequency. I know the core won't get much faster (If at all) but the memory oc alone may be worth and best part about hbm2 oc is that it draws next to no power

    Steve,
    Since HBM2 memory bandwidth makes a difference, do you think AMD should have put more focus on better MEMORY COMPRESSION to the GPU?
    It sounds like we're back to a POWER problem (or reliability) and AMD didn't want to push the HBM2 memory frequency higher at default settings. Better memory compression would likely solve that issue though (I'm assuming NVidia has a better solution so AMD could in theory do better).

      dmacedo it's all the console fanboys from the PS3/XBOX 360 era that were teenagers back then and are now working. They came to PC gaming, but brought all the console lifestyle with them. Just think about it, arguing about which CPU gets better FPS at 1080P (for reference, most modern game consoles, PS4/XBOX One, perfom at 1080P). I remember when PC Gaming was about pushing the limits, multiple 1600P monitors, really nice keyboards and mice, and some really fancy speakers, all in a dedicated gaming room for the PC.

      Who is going to SLI 1070's for a single game? Almost every major gaming or tech review company says CFX/SLI only makes sense on top-end graphics cards. This isn't like back when two 6600's in SLI made compelling economic sense. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to see devs supporting SLI, but nVidia themselves have all but left it in the dust.

      Well my thought was i paid $360 for a 1070, so if i paid under $500 for another 1070, could i see close to the same frame rates as a 1080 TI for just alittle under the price of a 1080TI? since returning my 1070 to micro center for $360 when they are selling the 1070 for $500 each. plus with D2 the game ran very smooth so i would kinda like to see benchmarks for 1440p and 4k with 1080 TI SLI.

      Don't know how you know that without trying. The amount of Voltage you can throw in a 1080 without physically modding or whatever it is so low, I don't see that as a reference. nVidia went for a very safe OC-environment with their cards, you basically can't destroy them with overclocking anymore. Finding a way past those safety-limits and going full-nuts would for sure squeeze out more out of the card. I don't see a good reason why it should not.

    Why do you have the rad fans blowing at the card? Take the heated air from the rad and blow it away completely, then use your extra two high cfm fans to blow completely fresh ambient onto the mosfets and vrams.
    I suppose the cross-wind created in your configuration could also potentially decrease overall performance of the heatsinks themselves by stopping the air from actually flowing, and creating areas where there could potentially be no airflow due to vortexing from fans blowing from two axis so close together.. but probably not.. Haven't tested this but I have the exact same issue in my Core x9 because of the orientation of the mobo Im getting some crosswind, and I have been testing diverters to divert the air exactly where needed (mobo vrm heatsinks and gpu specifically)

    Seeing that the extra compute units of Vega 64 aren't really doing much tells me that this card is extremely memory bandwidth limited. I would love to see AMD make a version of this with HBM2 and a 4096bit memory bus.

  • @robodog7610

    Only 400W? I dare AMD to make GPU which draws 1kW of power!
    Tho, they actually could make one in the future. Corsiar, EVGA, Seasoinc etc would be happy if they do. I still find Vega56 a good card when price is lowered to the 1070 range. Most of the people who build their system with 1070/Vega56 range have at least 650 W PSU.

    It's funny how people keep saying they don't care about power conumption.
    But if this Vega card was watercooled ONLY, they would have been crying to no end.
    400Watt isn't possible on air at this size. Get a clue guys. Power consumption matters a lot. My Threadripper 1950X peaks 282Watt and that is a lot already. But 400 on a GPU alone? JESUS.

    This is exactly what I was saying a few weeks ago. A 3rd party (Asus, MSi, Gigabyte, etc) may be able to OC a 56 from their factory with liquid cooling just like in this video and make a card that's actually worth the money. Still can't get past the noise tho.

  • @sujitsuram5075
    @sujitsuram5075 7 років тому +30

    I actually don't care about power draw, but I do care about the heat produced. Which unfortunately is directly proportional to the power consumed. with that being said, 400W on GPU alone is absolutely insane, given that its a 14nm FF process and energy efficient HBM to top that off. AMD or RTG, should seriously consider to scrap GCN and start from scratch, like they did with the excellent ryzen.

    • @DeadlyRedRing
      @DeadlyRedRing 7 років тому +1

      Artcore103 But cooling it also costs more. You won't be doing the overclock they did without water cooling and then that adds to the price far more than electricity will.

    • @sujitsuram5075
      @sujitsuram5075 7 років тому +3

      @Artcore103, trust me on this, I live in Vancouver and this summer we've got it bad with wild fires and really hot temps around 29-33'C with a ton of humidity. With the extra heat pumped my r9 390(a mere 250 watt card) out to my room which makes the ambient a bit intolerable at times. Now imagine a (~60 % increase than aforementioned)400W card. Although conditions on your side of things might be better.

    I upgraded from 7950 to 1070 after 5 years and 2 years of waiting for competitive flagship. I think Vega is a brilliant concept. It doesn't quite have any practical implementation yet but im sure it will be an excellent investment down the line and better for PC tech going into the future.

    I wonder where I stand in the chart, compare to Vega with my Asus Strix 980ti factory OC to 1317Mhz and GPU Boost to 1508Mhz, because I see a Ref 980ti in the benchmark chart, always below Ref GTX 1070 and Vega 56. The Ref GTX 980ti is clocked at 1000Mhz / Boost clock 1070Mhz, so I'm curious as to where my Asus Strix 980ti stack in this benchmark against Vega. I wish someone would do a benchmark review with Add_In_Board_partner graphics card, like my Asus Strix 980ti or Zotec GTX 980 Ti AMP! or GIGABYTE 980Ti XTREME GAMING OC EDITION, etc...instead of always using Ref GTX 980ti against Vega.
    I'm not too sure, but is it worth it for me to upgrade to Vega?

    • @JamiesonA1987
      @JamiesonA1987 7 років тому

      JayJapanB not really considering I don't own one. It is sad that Vega failed to really compete. Competition is great for us consumers. But at least amd's mid teir (rx 580) is competitive. But back to the main argument. Power consumption is not something every gpu buyer needs to worry about. My gpu (R9 390) suits my electrical bill just fine.

    • @JayJapanB
      @JayJapanB 7 років тому

      Sure, but it matters for me ($0.39usd kwh). Competition is only good when it's good. I just don't like when people defend something which is objectively worse with phrases like "but I don't care about power consumption". The 56 costs more than a 1080 at retail and is worse in every way(unless you use compute).
      That said, if people want to throw themselves under the bus in the name of competition and feeling different then be my guest.

    • @JamiesonA1987
      @JamiesonA1987 7 років тому

      JayJapanB well in amd's defence the pricing market in almost all tiers are messed up from mining. Rx 580s are or were in the $400-$450. So your price argument is irrelevant considering all cards are over priced. But still it is wrong to say that 100% of the people who dont care about power consumption are living with there parents or to call them stupid, cause in some cases its not that big of a deal. My temps are fine and my bills are low.

    • @JayJapanB
      @JayJapanB 7 років тому

      " price argument is irrelevant"
      No.
      MSRP is irrelevant if you can only find the product at $180USD more expensive than MSRP. It doesn't matter whose fault it is.
      You can't cherry pick that information.
      The 1080 is a significantly better(and cheaper) product than the 56, period.
      The 64 wasn't a good product compared to the 56 to begin with. Thus, we come to the conclusion of buy a 1080, or if money isn't much of an issue and you want something faster then buy a 1080ti.

    The power consumption issue , imo, is more about the miners - the cost/ gain equation. I was expecting AMD to crush the calculations as it usually did in the past, but the numbers are actually better for the NVDA series apparently - especially the 1070. As a gamer/production user who usually only upgrades every 4+ years, I don't like to push my hardware *too hard.... The idea of running loud and hot, 8 hours a day, when I'm sitting there next to it, isn't attractive.

  • @outsideredge
    @outsideredge 7 років тому

    I care more about the physical size of the card rather than the power consumption. Seriously, these things are massive. I get it Smaller lithography allows them to pack more transistors, making it more powerful, etc., etc., I just wish they'd take that same formula in the other direction and make something powerful yet impressively compact, like the Nano cards.

  • @krzych3114
    @krzych3114 7 років тому +1

    If this card was like 25% faster than 1080 Ti and you could get another 25% out of it by doing what you did then yes, power draw wouldn't matter at all because you basically would be getting next generation performance, it could even draw 650 watts from the wall and it would be adequate. All the power draw, heat and everything would be more than worth it. But doing that just to get around GTX 1080 performance is just... certainly fun thing to do, but there is just no reason in the world for something like this to exist for daily use.
