From a smoker yes Bic is the way to go first time every time it usually lasts about a month or so before it runs out of fluid and another tid bit for those of you who don't know the flint in the Bic will fit into a zippo if your zippo runs out of flint your Bic is out of fuel
Rarely if ever do I run out of ZIPPO lighter fluid because I use an EXOTAC Titanlight, and carry the Zippo canisters as backup. Titan light is waterproof, airtight. Bics are fine as a backup
One of the best fire starters is Styrofoam drink cups. They light when wet . I cut them into strips shove a stick into the foam as a handle and it never fails to ignite even damp tinder. I prefer the clear lighters you can see how much fuel is left, and they have better flints. I currently have a bic in my desk that the flint turned to a grey dust while in my backpack and the cheep lighter in the same jar still works.
yes the Ferro rod will disintegrate as well into a dust unless it is coated with some kind of sealant. I use nail polish for mine.
Personally when I use a ferrocerium rod, i place the Striker firmly on the ground, put my ferrocerium rod on top and pull towards myself to strike the rod. That way I'm not knocking my tinder around by accident pushing my Striker on the rod.
"David West" YT Channel....he uses a grinder to point the ferrocerium rod--45 degrees or so off center-line that it holds the tinder in place. Main point is having a knife spine that is absolutely ground flat to produce a sharp spark. Look up the term "Card Scraper"...it will tell you that you need a flat knife spine with a round-over hook to best create the sparks and create the wood shavings for the sparks. Cheers!

He still kept a lighter in his pocket after he quit, and he taught us grandkids to do the same!

I agree that a Bic lighter is the best fire starter. But I would argue that a better backup fire starter is a second Bic lighter.

I like to carry a full size Bic and a mini Bic. That way, they won't get lonely.
Get a Clipper lighter, far superior to the Bic. Clippers are available in a clear body so you can visually see the fuel level, never seen a Bic in a clear body. Clippers are refillable so you can top up the fuel when needed, never seen a refillable Bic. Clippers have replaceable flints, never seen a Bic you can replace the flint on. Clippers can be disassembled to aid drying when wet, once you disassemble a Bic it stays disassembled. You get the idea! Clippers are far superior!
Bonus feature, a full size Clipper fits snugly in an empty 12g cartridge. You can stuff half a cotton ball in the bottom of the cartridge and push the lighter in on top of it, keeps it 100% dry. You can attach all your other gubbins to the outside of the 12g cartridge.
@cujomojo2007 nonsense. It takes about 30 seconds to get a Bic lighter going again after being fully submerged. They're disposable, no need to replace fuel or flints. It's a plastic lighter. It is not something I want to reuse. I want to use it up and discard it. If I want a lighter I can refuel and reflect there are much better options than a cheap plastic Clipper.
I always buy white lighters and even if you can't find one on the shelf.If you get one with the funny pictures on it, you can take the outside plastic off and burn that too.And then you have a white lighter.But that way you can see your fluid levels.And I always take off the child safety.Good job I think i'm gonna make one of those little kits for myself

The nicest place I've been to is Macchu Piccu in Peru. I saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time in Lima, Peru. Most Americans see the Pacific the first time in California. Peru is an amazing place with very friendly people. Macchu Piccu is high up in the mountains. It takes a long time to get there from Lima. You fly a plane to Cusco, capital of the Inca Empire, then take a bus, then a train and finally another bus to get there. If you go don't sit on the grass like I saw a lot of people doing or you will get eaten up by some vicious sand fleas. The view was incredible. It's so amazing to see these huge stones up in the mountains moved and cut by so-called primitive people. Mind you these people cut these huge stones where you couldn't put a piece of paper between them and they did this without iron or horses. The ancient site was perfect. It had no damage or distress in the stone work. The only thing that was gone is the thatch roofing. These guys were excellent builders, master craftsmen without a doubt. It was built in the 15th century and wasn't rediscovered until 1911.

Excellent video sir! What you did with the ruler is a big part of why i prefer metal containers. Everyone seems to focus on water purification. You can turn the metal into cutting tools, arrowheads, fishing hooks, frog gigs, etc. Not trying to harp on it, just my outlook.
I made a emergency lighter somewhat like this but i used a small file and cotton rounds in the smallest size altoids tin.
As an explorer scout, we always carried a few 12 ga. Shells, in our oh shit kit. Fire starter
So you used the "gun powder" or the 12 ga. shell casing to assist with fire starting???

Put a couple of wraps of duct tape directly onto the lighter. It's out of the way, helps protect the lighter body, and gives you that extra tinder option, and possibly a repair item, or even an emergency wound closure.

Please demo a clipper lighter against a bic..the clipper doesn't have some of the issues you mention..not sure how much fuel you got? I use a clipper that if I hold it up towards a light..I know..then..simply top it off with butane..no worries about fuel..the safety crap? Not on a clipper..removable striker assembly? Yep,hex wheel instead on round..lot easier to use when fingers are froze(ask me how I know that)..replaceable flint? Yes..love the channel! I've been using Vaseline and cotton for over 30 yrs..going to mod my clipper some more thanks to this video! Thanks!

52yr old smoker here. A pack to a pack and a half a day. Ive never had a single issue with the saftey shroud. I dont remove them on any lighters not just bics. I think this trend is way over rated.

Great little kit, but I would choose a thicker cordage or even a 1/4"webbing to put around my neck. I would remove the child-safety too, easier to light and easier to dry.
You are absolutely right about drying a wet BIC - just shake it, blow hard on the sparking wheel, and you're good to go again. If a BIC gets cold the wintertime, it won't light - just put it in your crotch while gathering firewood and it will start working again.
One concern still left: the ruler - in order to stay around your neck for a long time, the edges have to be well smoothed. But as a ferrorod-striker it needs (at least some) crisp 90° edges, so I would prefer to duct-tape a separate striker to the ruler.
Could be improved furthermore if paired with a Victorinox Camper, which has a very good saw in addition to the usual Victorinox-tools - think about it.
Yass! I also carry my Victorinox (the rucksack- very old like 30+ years old) around my neck on a cord.
Great idea and will build one of these for my bushcraft kit. I always wrap a 1" x 3' strand of gorilla tape on all my bics.

I think I’ll do this scaled down using a bic mini.
On the trail I'm collecting tinder in a bag, dry stuff. In a jungle I used a bamboo stick it had kit inside it, like an S-O-S kit. String, hooks made of anything bone, wood, metal, arrows made from canned food lids, natural twine if i had time to make it, chance is though i wasn't sticking around to be spotted or found. I've got 3 clicks on the guys following me and 30 miles to get through, quietly.
The bamboo is hollow so makes a rice steamer you cook fish in too, part of it makes a water carrier, part of it is sharpened to a point as a spear, ranger tape keeps stuff inside the little holes inside. I tie my stuff together and into a large plastic bag, my cane on top as i wade slowly and quietly down river and get to the bank behind trees or shrubs.
Get a fire a going only small and smokeless you don't want to attract attention, do some personal admin and check for leaches and other bugs on the skin. heat water and cook fish or frogs - not the yellow or red ones, the drab colour guys. If there are trees get up in the trees before night and the predators come out. The smaller snakes are more jumpy than the big guys but the big guys will hug you to death, most of the spiders won't bother you if you don't bother them.
I'm out of here as soon as I make the RZ - and baths, booze, birds and food, real food and the MO to make sure I'm still okay. This is my last tour jungle I'm out of here. 42 years later I wake up hot and with a cold sweat feeling on my back. I rarely use a hammock these days but I still camp in the rain, storms are my favourite - summer hot sticky storms with lightening. Esprit de corps mes ami adieu Guyana.
If you buy the bic lighters with graphics on them you can peel off the label and the white plastic underneath is see through and you can see how much fuel is left

Thanks for another excellent video, sir! 😊 Some ideas for modifying or augmenting the kit:
1. Strap some storm proof matches and a striker to the back, maybe in a small plastic case or a mini Altoids tin or similar
2. Slide a small stick of fatwood in the back
3. Wrap the lighter only with some gorilla tape near the top, possibly securing a few rounds of waxed jute twine
4. Wrap the bottom of the lighter only with some gorilla tape, including a small loop of that bank line protruding from the bottom, so you can thread the lanyard through it
5. Include some lip balm strapped to the back
6. Strap a small baggie of fuel soaked tinder tabs to the back
7. Strap a flamethrower to the back
Okay just kidding with #7 😂 Also a good idea to have a 90 degree spine on a knife or saw, maybe part of a multitool, for use with striking a spark or scraping materials for tinder.

You should always have your sticks and twigs and tender ready before you attempt to start a fire. Just one cotton ball with petroleum jelly should start a fire without all the rest of the bands and other stuff. Don't use up all your resources in one fire. An old medicine bottle is what I use to house all my emergency fire starting kit in. Just drill a hole through the lid of the bottle, put your bank line through and tie a knot so it can't go back through. Then there you have it, a medicine bottle with a lanyard. You don't have to worry about anything pushing your lighter gas button down, you may find a different bottle that works even better.

I’ve been using my current bic lighter every single day multiple times a day for at least 3 months.
Im all about DIY and innovation, not spending money when you dont need to. But the Exotac BIC lighter cover cant be beat.

My favorite firestarter is a plain ole Bic that I carry in an Exotac waterproof sleeve. I dont carry any tinder. The world is full of tinder and in a pinch I can cannibalize a piece of flamable clothing or even the paracord on the Exotac. Im not against dedicated tinder. It is very convenient. But i want to keep my pockets light. So as easy as it is to find natural tinder and with all the options I have for improvising tinder out of other things I carry, I simply dont feel a need to include it in my edc.
How much does a cotton ball with Petroleum jelly weight in your neck of the woods? LOL>

when I get a new lighter, I always use a small zip tie to make sure the gas release doesn't get pressed and leak the gas out. I carry a lighter in my pocket and will make one of these for when I go into the woods. If I can find the stuff for it. I almost always have a small pouch wit this stuff in it when I go out but I will make one of these so I can carry it around my neck and not lose it if I fall in the water or something. I would sharpen a short section of the ruler to double as a small knife and then I know I have everything I need.
Ans sometimes I use a small rubber band instead of the zip tie. To make it easier to remove and put back. But the concept is the same. A Bic is easy to dry out even if it fell into mud. So that is not a real worry, With a Bic the biggest worry is that the fuel leaks out and is gone. They last a very, very, very long time.
I made a Diy fier starter that I put in a 300 blk, casing that has a cotton ball in it and, taped it off and I torchered tested it and it definitely works
You know Jason I just realized that if you took that piece of ruler and you really polished it or maybe even painted it with some silver or aluminum paint whatever is shiniest that you could attach it to a few feet of line and you could spin it like a buler and you can use it as a signal device when the sun is out

I keep 3 of the straw w/cotton tinder in them in my wallet but I don't use Vaseline. Instead I use Triple Antibiotic ointment making them multipurpose. Doesn't take a lot to get an infection. That would suck in such an environment.

Cute. Just stick with the lighter. I like the Bics but another one I like a lot is D'JEEP. They are a bit hard to find and more expensive than Bics but they are adjustable and shaped like a mini jerry can so a little bit wider and shorter than a Bic but just as reliable. Also, when I carry a bic, I put it in the rubber piece from a lighter leash backwards. I remove the the hardware, string and winder and just use the ribber end piece but you can leave it attatched if you want to. This not only keeps it from getting dirt and lint down in it, it keeps it water tight and keeps the button from being pushed while in your pocket or bag.
Why do you like the d'jeep lighters?
Use milkshake straws..easier to stuff fuel in.

I travel a lot by air and have lost too many of these type of kits to an over zealous baggage policy including my backpack being unloaded from the plane and I had to get off to open it up to remove the mini Bic from my toilet bag (use to burn the toilet paper) so I now just carry the elements to make one or two up when I get to my destination. I’ll bring them back in my carry on and sometimes get through. But for a majority of the time I take it I’m going to lose it to security. Not every country has the Bic brand but you can easily get a disposable type as long as it flames it’ll do.
Fire, fire everywhere
I carry a zippo, for its unrivaled style lol but all my kits have Bic lighters. There's a lot of contention between those two lighters, but I think having both is a good idea. The zippo can use more types of fuel, some of which you can make yourself. So long term it might end up being the better answer. However, for the cost and maintenance of a zippo you can stockpile Bic lighters, easily. I don't think it's a reasonable belief that if you bought 100 Bic lighters that you could go through all of them in a SHTF situation lol so you might as well get a bunch of them, out two in everything you carry.
I carry a ton of firemaking stuff. I'm no chain smoker, either, I just like having access to fire, since it's so useful. You can fix almost anything with fire heat.
What fuel for a zippo can you make yourself?
@user-wd4ge2zh2c alcohol based solutions work with varying degrees of effectiveness, and some oils will, too. I'm experimenting with a few different types, but so far old fashioned lamp oil and rubbing alcohol work the best. I've heard you can also make some out of different tree saps, but that's still new ground for me
@@user-wd4ge2zh2c easy enough to make an alcohol based fuel as long as you can source the ingredients and equipment.
and any drinking alcohol is fuel for a zippo and any non-drinking alcohol, Iso and denatured, etc. works fine.
EDC sweats will say BICs are unreliable but you can pick one up off the ground and 9/10 times it'll light 2nd try

I am assuming you are talking about using a water bottle like a magnifying glass to start the fire. That would be tricky but definitely worth a shot.

unless you are a child I would suggest removing the child safety ring on the lighter, they stop you from manipulating it in certain circumstances.

I've been wrapping my lighters in 6m of hemp wicks recently, it's very good for 'survival' lighter applications.
Buy white or yellow Bic lighters. You can actually see how much fuel is inside.
If anybody from the Bic company reads this message. A retractable cover on a bic lighter made by Bic Company would protect the fuel from accidentally being discharged when the lighter it’s compressed e.i. in your backpack.
This could be an aftermarket product for outdoor enthusiasts.
I’ve had Bic lighters lose fuel this way.
And yes I would purchase six of these covers as a starter.
I have modified zip ties to fit under the red tab to prevent the leakage. Problem is once I need the lighter I have to cut it and then modify the next zip tie. I agree an outdoor enthusiast version would be awesome
exotac make a cover for bic lighters and those chinese shopping sites have a version to for a lot cheaper. Or wrap a bit wire or string around under it so it can't be push down and allow gas to leak.

Vaseline is very flammable and with burn even from a spark if on a fine tinder like cotton ball pulled apart

lighter still isnt a ferro rod and ferro rod isnt a lighter both are good lighter runs out way faster and moisture is a problem ferro rod needs a good cotton/fuzzy fiber material, they both have their place either is number 1 depending on the situation

Get yourself some Clipper lighters, I'm an ex smoker and BICs are nowhere near as good.
Bic lighters work almost all the time, unless it's wet, cold or windy. If you get submerged in cold weather it's not going to dry out enough until after you're dead. If you insist on using a Bic style lighter use one with electronic ignition. Waterproof/windproof matches are a far better choice.
