I'm not a streamer but I watch one a lot and it seems to me that honesty and care and a lack of concern about the money/# of viewers are very attractive qualities. IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING THAT ENGAGES PEOPLE, then be honest and caring and end the stream when you are tired, so that you can care when you come back next time. I feel intuitively that the primary factor that makes a stream a success is whether the streamer has something of interest to engage in - not necessarily even content, it could be answering questions from viewers, or even showing viewers' contributions - and all the devices to make people sub or watch longer are counter-productive, the viewers feel used and the streamer gets tired and cynical. A fresh approach of being totally genuine and open, on top of having something of interest to stream about, and being able to engage the viewers consistently during the stream, would benefit both sides, I think, and probably grow the channel organically rather solidly, at a guess.
But I have no idea what you would stream about, you've helped me a ton with getting a microphone, but I wouldn't watch streams about tech gear because it's not my world. I have the mic now. :)

I managed to make it on Twitch by being positive and creative in UA-cam shorts.

I honestly think Discord is going to make a play for the real streaming space in the next couple of years. Streaming is a feature, it doesn't need to be the whole platform, and they're already winning so hard at all of the other features that matter (community-oriented ones and financial support).

Crazy enough one thing you mentioned gets me. As someone who streams to 0 people it is very very easy to say, I will just do it tomorrow. I'm still trying to break that as well so it's good to hear that even seasoned streamers go through that. Thanks for all you do! Excited for what's next!!

Same, I stream to YT and Twitch at the same time just to get that sweet sweet interaction I switch to streaming from editing for.
Editing is/was hella fun. And for what I had at the time, I tried to make the videos as whacky as possible with edits that went well with the clip. But after a while of seeing low numbers below 10, not a lot of comments on how people felt aside from the occasional friends commenting because they were on it. I started to feel like getting the "content" out right away along with being able to talk to people was a fine trade-off compared to the fun "I" at least had chuckling at my own edits.

I think the point made about ROI on drama vs ROI on good content is something I've been wrestling with for a while now. As a creator myself, it's honestly exhausting seeing the deluge of absurdity on social feeds from people just doing whatever they can to cause a problem and get posted everywhere.
This channel has been a constant source of light and inspiration for me since it's inception, and I can only expect more of the same moving into 2024. Happy New Year Senpai team and Harris!

    • @markjodonohue

I think its important to constantly reflect on your "why" as a creator. I'm a teacher and create content with the intention of helping other teachers get better at their job, because my why is that I want future generations to be simply better than ours. I can only impact so many students in my teaching career, but by creating content I'm able to reach (indirectly) a much larger number of students. When I remember this why, it's easy for me to block out all the noise and drama, and focus on solely on good, quality, helpful content.
My point is, if you're providing value (even if its entertainment), that should be enough. Anything else is just being disingenuous to yourself.

  • @canadian_thor

Been feeling the same lately, it definitely feels like there has been an increase in drama this year. People looking for the negative sides of anything and generating these echo chambers to greatly amplify the negativity of a situation rather than taking a step back and analyzing the different perspectives. Where people are more arguing (sometimes attacking) rather than debating topics I suppose.
Not having the drive to stream because its just too much time and energy towards a space/general mindset I don't necessary agree with. I just want to be a good peep, bring positivity and connect with other cool peeps without the drama or feeling to add a disclaimer of some kind to any public posting.
Would definitely be interested in watching and being part of a conversation about this
Thanks for the 2023 content, and looking forward to see what 2024 brings! Happy New Years

Thank you for this video. I forgot why I enjoyed watching streams and why I started streaming in the first place. Just last week I added sounds to my stream and when I went through the sounds I found so many troll songs like "hey Kappa" and "raining tacos" and it reminded me of all the good memories I made with some streamers and all the laughs we had. I added those sounds and hopefully I can bring back just having fun in streams again.

I fell the same way! I've only been doing this for about 3 years but the last 6-9 months I've just kept saying "I'll go live tomorrow". Between 4 kids, a full time job and a marriage to take care of streaming has taken a back burner. It's also been because when I was going live I didn't have a consistent schedule so my views were going down. And then I was getting randoms coming in and trying to bait me to say something controversial or inappropriate. I loved streaming and I've met so many new friends who I wouldn't have met if I didn't stream. I'm hoping I can get back to streaming after the new year but for now just going into my friends streams or gaming with them off stream will keep me happy.
Thank you for being real and letting us know that we're not the only ones having these feelings.

This is fascinating, as I thought my disinterest in streaming and making videos lately was just one of my burn out phases. But upon deeper inspection, I think you’re right. I have lost interest because it seems like the only way to make it as a successful content creator these days is to start a fight with other creators or do something very drastic… and the past 6 weeks I have started to play games (not my channel niche) that I am interested in and not making videos or streaming. It’s a sad thing to realize…and it’s now evident to me that this only hurts the creativity and drive of other content creators.

Yep, I burnt out on the drama and decline awhile ago. So I understand that sentiment. I got hit with covid and health concerns around that and just never got back to the schedule of streaming. I have been thinking about "event streaming" recently, as I still make art nearly daily. So, I may do some streams around the release of an image or product, but I honestly think that approach is a nice way to connect with the community you build elsewhere. Good luck on getting back to the passion, I hope you find it!

I can relate to what you said SO much.. I feel a lot of twitch streamers are mostly standing out with drama, hate, nudity etc and it changes the people drawn to the platform. And I noticed how much streamers try to network as a business strategy for dear life. I started to distance myself from those folks, focusing on myself and my community, doing my own thing. I kind of miss the feeling of playing games with friends and like-minded people without all the other stuff happening..
I try to live what I'd like to see more of on the platform - just playing games and talking to my people.
Anyway, Happy New Year Harris, and thanks for another video!

I DON'T go live anymore for the same reason you are. ALSO i am working on a last ditch effort to stream again once a week. I also working on streaming epic events ive never seen people do. I feel like the reason Twitch is so susceptible to "exploitative streams" is because there is no "quality" in discucoverability. Its solely about numbers of viewers and that ONLY rewards shock and outrage.
This is 100% Twotch's fault, they have had years to fix this but refuse.
If the video about drawing boobas was on twitch it would be on everyones front page but UA-cam dont recomend that same content due to an advanced algorithm

    • @DaenGaming
      @DaenGaming 7 місяців тому +1

Well said. Any platform that exclusively rewards raw viewership is just asking to be exploited, it's absolutely something Twitch has had many chances to improve but has chosen not to.

    • @deano1699
      @deano1699 6 місяців тому

The main issue IS discoverability, part of which is ALSO robust filtering for the content you want. "Exploitative" content isn't a thing - and it's good that twitch doesn't want to get rid of it. They just need to make it easy to wall off for those who don't want to (or shouldn't by age) see it. It's nice Twitch has the most adult (mature) take on things, especially compared to UA-cam, which is obsessed with pleasing advertisers and staying "normal-boring"... While also screwing themselves over by favoring high-dollar creators over what's actually right and fair.

  • @pastorgainzgames

I agree with this. Overall I streaming has taken a back seat to my content path currently. This year marks 5 years of streaming and I have been making content now for 2. Making UA-cam videos, TikTok content, Editing videos, It seems to be the direction that I am now going. I have cut streams down to once a week so I can just make videos because I cannot justify streaming like I use to anymore. Thanks for the video man!

  • @dBProductions6

I've been streaming on twitch for 5 years and man you hit so many good points here. I am still an affiliate and i usually stream guitar or drums but sometimes games. After covid everyone is a streamer so most of my old audience is that now. I loved twitch for the first year or so and its slowly gone downhill to now i cant even break 5-10 viewers without a raid. Alot of other streamers I thought were friends have either quit and deleted accounts, or they just never come by even though i go to there streams quite often. The discoverability in music is just gross and i think we should have categories for different instruments.

Regardless of everything going on, Harris you are a smart and level-headed creator who has helped so many of us. I think your value goes way beyond streaming, and has done for several years - it's not 'bad' for you to not want to stream much. You're ingrained in this community, a pillar of kindness and sense. I'm excited to see what other things you have in the works, these 'products' sound like they are going to be brilliant - as everything you seem to produce is. I wish Twitch would listen to you more, I think Dan Clancy is great and is definitely trying his best - but as we all know, the corporate world is a difficult one to navigate. Your videos I'm sure have been helping. Any time you come to YT and talk about things that are going on; your viewers KNOW what they are getting; solid advice, reasonable and achievable 'takes'. Keep it up

Hi, I just whant to say Thank you senpai for all the videos and advice this past year thanks to all the advice I grew as a content creator on twitch from just starting out with nothing to my first 300 followers on twitch. I also need to say as a gamer my self I feel like nudity is overshadowing gamers on twitch a bit because for new gamer streamers its a bit dificult to get diacoverd if you dont use other platforms like twitter youtube and instagram or just even tiktok so they just need to find a good ballance yes nudity arstists is a thing but if theres a 50/50 for both gamers and artists that would be great. Thanks again for all the advice and giving us a voice with that advice . YOu RULE ❤❤❤

Dude. You're Lav mic is huge! You shouldn't have to hold it like that. 😆
Seriously though, I just want to compliment you on your channel and setup. I've been a subscriber since around 2020, and watching your vids about streaming and equipment, despite the fact that don't actually do any live streaming. I relate to when you said "These are my people" about Twitch. It's odd, I'm a 40 year old, ex-game developer, and would love to be able to spend time live streaming and watching streams. But finding the time outside of work, family & kids to do that is just so hard. And so, I come here, listen about how to stream, and even have a pretty decent setup for streaming, and dream of what could have been.
    Happy new year!

Very new to Twitch streaming myself, and watching others. I’m on there mostly for the just chatting as I am hosting a bible study/sermon prep stream, and also trying to get better at Pub G on PC (I’ve always been a mobile player). But, the reason I decided to, besides reaching folks for Christ, is because I’m already doing my study and it will help me be more disciplined in it. So I believe Twitch will be good for me as it isn’t adding something, (other than same game time here or there), but is just an addition to my life already. But we’ll see.

I agree with the sentiments expressed in this video, and I believe platforms should stop trying to be the best platform for streamers (mocking Twitch on social media like Kick has). Platforms should actively demonstrate their commitment to serving the needs and desires of both streamers and viewers. I appreciate Dan Clancy's efforts at Twitch, actively participating in streams, and engaging with the community. However, I believe bureaucratic obstacles currently hinder the full realisation of his vision, impeding the method's true potential. Despite these challenges, I remain hopeful that the barriers will eventually be overcome, ensuring the growth of this approach. Live streaming is amazing to watch, and being a part of it is just not stable at the moment. I hope this gets a solution at some point before it effects the platforms too much, and we shall see in the future🤞

Hey Harris, I know this primarily Twitch/Gaming content shared and viewed here - but is there any content for those of us that also fall into the music creator category? Struggling artist over here, 3rd attempt to make something from the art professional - and just at a loss for where to even go these days. Soundcloud and Bandcamp arent what they used to be for undiscovered talent - and TikTok is morbidly overcrowded.
What can someone like myself do?

I always preferred making long form content for UA-cam, and I found a way to stream while I do that. The problem is I kind of feel deflated about streaming or content in general right now. I just got back in BMX and started getting back in the gym and have just felt better. The desire to play games isn't there, and I've been happier being active. I'll get back around to it someday, I think. It's just not a priority.

For live streams.. i think the difference between on demand videos to live streams is of your going to watch a live stream it's a for me a dedication because i want to interact, comment, and socialize... And it's hard to do that in a overly busy channel or a streamer that can only catch 1 out of 20 messages because the chat is so much. For on demand videos i can watch, pause, and un pause when ever i want..
Long story short, I'm only diving into twitch when i know i won't be interrupted by my kids or wife..

I get what you're saying, Twitch has changed.... I've even noticed it in our small Belgian Twitch streaming community... The drama is taking over and the thing I'm most disappointed in is that people are loving the drama. I miss the days when we were more connected and supportive... ok there was a little competition but it was friendly and fun... now some of the streamers are getting pretty nasty with comments and the viewers are following in their example... It's a shame that it's getting such a toxic vibe
On an other note, I can't wait to see what you are building with aitum. Sounds like a lot of fun working on it, cause you really light up when you talk about it.

Hey Harris, been a fan for some time now and i truely do appreciate how much youve helped me develop and grow in this space which is why i wanna give the benefit of the doubt. When it comes to artistic nudity im sure youre aware that there are content creators out there that take it too far in terms of pushing boundries. Dont get me wrong i dont care but its more about the hypocrisy around gambling that makes it a bitter pill to swallow. Its also that as a platform twitch at one point stood for gaming and now its more of a platform for lewd pornography like a my free cams then one about gaming. At least it feel that way to me. Just feel a bit disingenuous for you to sit there and see it was used as click baity react content vs how it was actually going to turn into a problem for the platform and its advertisers who pushed for the pull

There are a lot of great voices who have content worth viewing, partaking in, and supporting. It’s difficult because the shock content will always standout. Shockjocks have been a thing for eons. While that will always be there, as long as we provide access to the non-shock, real people, true discoverability, then the positivity… the voices of value can prevail.

  • @DoktorDetroit

Societal mores and values are shifting, there are no longer stigmas attached to behavior once believed to be...distasteful. Not much can be done about it other than just refuse to take part in the nonsense. It'll get worse before it gets better....but I feel refusing to stream in a respectful manner or in a way that appeals to those who don't wish to take part in this shift, is equally harmful. I hope you continue to stream Mr Heller, you're a beacon of good, quality content. Happy New Year.

I've only recently gotten more serious into stream, on twitch, even going so far as having my best stream to date last night. But I'm hoping someone who is better than I am might give me some advice. My monitor I play on is 3440x1440 so I've been streaming at 2752x1152, but I'm wondering if it would be better for me to stream at 1920x1080 to better work for people who might still be using a standard resolution monitor.

I play at 1440p myself and stream out at 720. which may seem weird to some but sadly, lol my current gpu doesn't like running the game @ 1440p, running the obs and other stuff on my 1080p monitor and then encoding the stream itself to 1080p. works for me though

Hello Harris, I am curious, I have seen you hand holding mics in at least a couple of videos, and assuming that's a Podmic, it's about 2 pounds? Just curious why you are hand holding mics these days when you have that beautiful Beacon mic stand? I stared at your hand the whole video. But I also stare at the Beacon logo in other videos as well. Just curious.

It's all in essence broken down to the 'quantity over quality' streaming culture. It stems from the partner goals on twitch to everything else.
Imagine if a stream was a 2 hour TV show style stream. Well planned, excellent content for 2 hours. That would be re-watchable.
Nobody is out there watching VODs of an 8 hour stream with ads, breaks, chatting breaks and just general downtime.
I don't know what the fix is but that in my opinion is the larger issue.
