That, more than anything, has got me totally hyped. EDIT: Aaaaaaaand all they did was slap the S3 soundfont onto the PC Collection MIDIs and call it a day. Leave it to SEGA to blow a golden opportunity by taking the lazy route.
Honestly can't wait to hear finalized versions of these tracks if they're gonna sound any different. Especially this one since this one is my favorite of the proto/pc tracks.
@Nicktai the Steam release is just a port but the rerelease in Origins is a remastered version which makes it a new version of the game. That's why the tracks are being changed.
Fun Fact: If SEGA had instead used the prototype themes for the stages that were covered up by MJ's versions, we would have got more Sonic 3 ports due to the copyrights of the songs no longer existing.
I don't think that's true. There's nothing stopping them from porting the music and using this version. It's not MJ that's causing issues with sonic 3, it's one of the other musicians from what I understood
As disappointing that it is that Origins won’t feature the music done by Brad Buxer and co, I’m also excited to see what Jun Senoue can do with this track. It almost has it all… groove, great bass line, catchy melody… it has all the tools Senoue-San needs to make this track more memorable than ever. All he needs to do is stick the landing. Edit: Jun Senoue in my opinion did NOT stick the landing… especially not in Carnival Night… just… oof…
@@ZikOfficialUA-cam And indeed I am. I have full on notes on why I personally didn’t like most of the Origin’s versions of the beta tracks. Like Carnival Night’s tracks ignoring the instrument changes on the melody in the beta version of the songs, making the melody sound boring… or with the choice of lowering the melody down a whole octave the overtones sound so muddy that that the melody no longer sounds like they are leading the song, rather the melody sounds like the songs are being dragged into the next part, so to speak. On top of countermelodies already present in the beta tracks, Senoue added another counter melody at one point in, Act 1 (if I remember correctly) that makes chords sound unresolved due to his note choices not fitting the chords… it’s a whole mess. The only zone Senoue didn’t mess up was the beta version’s Ice Cap Zone. To say I was disappointed… ESPECIALLY in Carnival Night’s new OST is an understatement.

As someone who grew up with on the PC port, finding out that this version was the original all along felt like some kind of vindication. Hearing it w/ Genesis sounds and not through horrid MIDI though, is amazing.
The sound on PC varied wildly depending on how each soundcard handled FM synth. Early soundcards came very close to approximating the Genesis sound (and that way my main experience with the game), but later ones interpreted the soundtrack in increasingly weird ways.
It’s not the “original”, I’m fairly certain it was placeholder music they created while they were figuring out the whole “MJ music” situation when they eventually just decided to use the music his team created anyway for the final version. You can tell because the prototype songs sound so stylistically out of place with the rest of the soundtrack

If you want to know what they were thinking, you have to go back to 1993 when they first created the Origins version, that exact version. It was never made in 2022 or 2021.
It was ok, personally I like origins section b better than this one. But I think all prototypes of ice cap will always be bad, only the Jackson teams version of ice cap is good. But this one is pretty cool
Definely my favorite from the protype. it blows the final version from the water. The melody in this one is so fucking good and it fits very well for Carnival Night. And those beats, oh boy. This music is so much win.

It's a bummer because i myself love both the original and the Prototype music and i thought they would have adapted the new music from the prototype's ost. Instead, it seems that they straight up ported the midi arrangements from the original 1997 PC release and used those with a genesis sound font.
@@CTR_SimonMK7 Ice Cap in Origins uses the the exact prototype versions. Except Act 1 uses Act 2 instrument lead. Launch Base in Origins is basically prototype and PC versions have a baby. Carnival Night in Origins is purely based on the PC version only. And Credits theme and Competition menu theme in Origins are straight up from the prototype versions.

Memzy64u The midis themselves weren’t bad it was Microsoft’s watered down Sc-55 Wavetable that made them sound bad and fake “FM Synth” mode which just removed some sound channels to make it compatible. If they worked to make a legitimate custom FM Synth mode it could’ve sound like the Mega Drive version as most soundblaster cards used a YM3814 if I’m correct. If you connect a really good midi device the mod is could sound pretty good. Overall it was Microsoft wavetable synth and sega laziness of not making a proper FM mode that made the midis “Bad”
The FM tracks have more channels, actually. The GM midis are horrible. They weren't fake, they were included for the people with FM-synth cards, like SoundBlaster 16.
Master Emerald I should’ve done more research and phrased some stuff better. That’s a bad on my part, but they could’ve done more work with the FM Synth mode as it still uses General MIDI instrument assignments. I still stand by my opinion that the midis aren’t bad. A very common misconception is that midi is information and sound, but midi is just info. There are some pretty good midis that sound like trash because of Microsoft’s wannabe SC-55 wavetable. For an example music from games like Duke Nukem 3D or Blood sound pretty bad using Microsoft’s wavetable compared to something like a Roland SC-55, SC-88 Yamaha XG(insert model number), or other great free online sound fonts. @@thatoneguy5383 There was no 'FM mode' you just had to select the kind of soundcard you had, either FM or General Midi. The FM midis were only there because if you use the general midi instrument assignments on an FM card they sound like crap.
People who like the final carnival night themes onyl like them out of nostalgia, it litteraly sounds like someone went onto a free music maker on their phone and spend 7 minutes making a song.

I came to your channels prototype after hearing about the music replacement in Sonic 3 for Sonic Origins and wow I love this version despite me missing the original version. This is actually really good.
I love how they actually composed an entirely different track. Out of all the ones MJ worked on, I'm surprised somebody listened to both of them and thought "MJ did it better" despite the final Act 2 changing absolutely nothing from Act 1, as well as the prototype version sounding way more fitting in general. The final track itself is fine, but listen to this prototype. It's incredible that it's a completely different tune. Don't think any Act 2 in Sonic 3, final and prototype, changed the tune entirely besides this particular stage. The clapping really reels you into it, well the shock of it being a brand new tune gets you into the rest of the act.
@Medachod The intro is entirely made up. 0:07 to 0:22 is a remix of the first melody from act 1. 0:22 to 0:37 has a similar chord progression to the second melody of act 1, especially the bass. the parts at 0:43 and 0:50 are directly lifted from act 1.
There is no reason to think that MJ's team's Carnival Night track didn't sound utterly amazing in it's original form but just didn't translate well to the Megadrive. They were probably hoping for much higher fidelity out of the sounds that can only be played back through the DAC. Shame we're not likely to ever get the actual original tapes.

The issue I had with the Final version of Launch Base, Carnival Night and Ice Cap is that both acts sounded too similar to each other. This song sounds like something I'd here in Sonic Advance.
This was my favorite prototype track and was really looking forward to its inclusion in Origins. ...and Jun Senoue just butchered the hell out of it. 😐
Same, I even liked the MIDI version, the S3K Complete version, and felt justice that it was the Beta all along... Jun Senoue should not have touched it at all...
I honestly think they used hydrocity act 2 as the skeleton for this song. They both follow the exact same pattern/structure and are the exact same length.
I don't have nostalgia based off of this game (only recently played it), and come with the unbiased decision that for Carnival Night the prototype music is better
nah not in the minority...i actually run this version on Sonic 3 AIR / Complete. It's much better. Ice Cap and Launch Base were the ones I wish they didnt have to change

I'm really happy this came out its now one of my favorite melodies in Sonic 3 it perplexes me quite a bit how they replaced this with clown music (not to invalidate any one's opinions) to be frank before the prototype and before the pc version I Hated the final carnival night music and still do to this day and it in turn negatively impacted my opinion on the zone as a whole anyway glad I can always toggle it on In Sonic 3 AIR
imma be honest. i prefer these songs over the MJ version of carnival night. these make the stage somewhat tolerable. the MJs are the nail in the coffin that make me want to rip my hair out...
Fun Fact: Brad Buxer and all the original composers from the alleged MJ tracks are still credited in Sonic Origins when you finish Sonic 3 & Knuckles. :)
I think the only songs from the final version I cannot let go are Ice Cap act 1 and 2... The more I listen to Carnival Night proto and Launch Base proto, the more I love them. I just finished a full playthrough of Sonic 3 AIR and I still cannot take these songs outta my head!
Prototype Ice Cap is a really great theme as well. It's a remix of Crystal Egg zone from Sonic 2 for MS/GG, which is a really great track to begin with.

If I was involved with the music with Sonic Origins it would like this Angel Islands 1 and 2: Original Hydro city 1 and 2: Original Marble Garden 1 and 2: Original Carnival Night 1 : Proto Carnival Night 2: this one Ice Cap 1 and 2: MJ Launch base zone 1: MJ Launch base zone 2( I know some people will disagree): proto Mushroom Hill, Flying Battery: Original Sandolopis 1 and 2: Proto Lava Zone, Hidden Palace, Sky Sanctuary, Death Zone: Original Doomsday Zone: Original Super Sonic theme: Proto Knuckles theme: Proto That is all.

Somehow it went very very wrong… the game itself looks great so I’m going to still get Origins and enjoy the gameplay but ouch… the changed music will be quite painful to hear sadly.
been listening to this for the past two weeks. and I find it WAY better then the MJ tracks. That said, part of me wished that SEGA should've never asked MJ or Bruxer to compose the tracks for Carnival Night, Icecap, & Launch Base Zone back then. Otherwise Sonic 3&Knuckles would've had more ports & remained on Steam. And not having this liscense issue BS to happen.
To be honest It would have been nice if the final game had nothing but MJ's team's music in it. That way the prototype ROM would have all of Sega's music and we would have gotten all of both! Right now we're never likely to ever hear the other 30+ MJ's team's songs
Blows the final game's act 2 out of the water. Respect to Michael Jackson's track, but Carnival Night Act 2 in the final is basically the same as Act 1. Had they used this as an Act 2, it would have made Act 2 stick out more, although the flooded section and the power outage do help to make Act 2 distinct. I think a completely new song like this would have worked way better than the barely modified version of Act 1 we ended up getting. At least this was used in the PC port, even if it was shitty MIDIs lmao.
I still think it’s pretty wild how we got a demented and creepy track in the Final version (initial release). This gives the darker act 2 more “happy” energy.
ABSOLUTE UNIT OF A TUNE! God, I can't make up my mind which one I like more, Carnival Night proto or Launch Base Proto. Carnival Night has way better vibes, but Launch Base tells a better story in its melody, and it's way stronger in it's complexion. Launch Base changes key almost every measure!

This is now my 3rd favorite track in sonic 3 right behind lava reef act 1 and final version icecap act 1, I just cannot stop listening to this track, it even beats out sonic 3 complete’s version of CN prototype. This was definitely made for the Genesis’s sound chip
Personally, I think these versions of Carnival Night Zone's themes are better, even on the PC. The final game's versions were generic carnival music with a bit of generic circus jingles added into it.

The fact these remasters exist shows and proves that they're actually good songs when played on the hardware they were intended too be on in the first place. So glad these exist to listen to in all its Megadrive glory

Carnival Night prototype theme is definately more fun. The final Carnival Night theme sound like generic circus music. I respect and am a fan of Michael Jackson, but seriously, why did he and his sound team took that direction with his version of Carnival Night? I appreciate the Jam reference though. It also doesn't help that every MJ and Sound Team Act 2 tracks are just Act 1 but some instrumentation cut off. But yeah, the prototype Carnival Night theme is much better.

the pc version sounds shit. Slam it into a megadrive, it instantly turns amazing.
Memzy64u The midis themselves weren’t bad it was Microsoft’s watered down Sc-55 Wavetable that made them sound bad and fake “FM Synth” mode which just removed some sound channels to make it compatible. If they worked to make a legitimate custom FM Synth mode it could’ve sound like the Mega Drive version as most soundblaster cards used a YM3814 if I’m correct. If you connect a really good midi device the mod is could sound pretty good. Overall it was Microsoft wavetable synth and sega laziness of not making a proper FM mode that made the midis “Bad”
The FM tracks have more channels, actually. The GM midis are horrible. They weren't fake, they were included for the people with FM-synth cards, like SoundBlaster 16.

Master Emerald I should’ve done more research and phrased some stuff better. That’s a bad on my part, but they could’ve done more work with the FM Synth mode as it still uses General MIDI instrument assignments. I still stand by my opinion that the midis aren’t bad. A very common misconception is that midi is information and sound, but midi is just info. There are some pretty good midis that sound like trash because of Microsoft’s wannabe SC-55 wavetable. For an example music from games like Duke Nukem 3D or Blood sound pretty bad using Microsoft’s wavetable compared to something like a Roland SC-55, SC-88 Yamaha XG(insert model number), or other great free online sound fonts. The Sonic 3 Midis actually sound pretty decent on a YPG-235. I recommend you give it a listen. youtu . be/60d4uGPNblo

The FM midis were only there because if you use the general midi instrument assignments on an FM card they sound like crap.
People who like the final carnival night themes onyl like them out of nostalgia, it litteraly sounds like someone went onto a free music maker on their phone and spend 7 minutes making a song.

I came to your channels prototype after hearing about the music replacement in Sonic 3 for Sonic Origins and wow I love this version despite me missing the original version. This is actually really good.
I love how they actually composed an entirely different track. Out of all the ones MJ worked on, I'm surprised somebody listened to both of them and thought "MJ did it better" despite the final Act 2 changing absolutely nothing from Act 1, as well as the prototype version sounding way more fitting in general.
The final track itself is fine, but listen to this prototype. It's incredible that it's a completely different tune. Don't think any Act 2 in Sonic 3, final and prototype, changed the tune entirely besides this particular stage. The clapping really reels you into it, well the shock of it being a brand new tune gets you into the rest of the act.
@Medachod it’s not an entirely different tune, it’s a remix of act 1 in a similar manner to hydrocity. listen and compare this song to act 1.

@Medachod The intro is entirely made up. 0:07 to 0:22 is a remix of the first melody from act 1. 0:22 to 0:37 has a similar chord progression to the second melody of act 1, especially the bass. the parts at 0:43 and 0:50 are directly lifted from act 1.
There is no reason to think that MJ's team's Carnival Night track didn't sound utterly amazing in it's original form but just didn't translate well to the Megadrive. They were probably hoping for much higher fidelity out of the sounds that can only be played back through the DAC. Shame we're not likely to ever get the actual original tapes.

The issue I had with the Final version of Launch Base, Carnival Night and Ice Cap is that both acts sounded too similar to each other.

I'm really happy this came out its now one of my favorite melodies in Sonic 3 it perplexes me quite a bit how they replaced this with clown music (not to invalidate any one's opinions) to be frank before the prototype and before the pc version I Hated the final carnival night music and still do to this day and it in turn negatively impacted my opinion on the zone as a whole anyway glad I can always toggle it on In Sonic 3 AIR
imma be honest. i prefer these songs over the MJ version of carnival night. these make the stage somewhat tolerable. the MJs are the nail in the coffin that make me want to rip my hair out...
Fun Fact: Brad Buxer and all the original composers from the alleged MJ tracks are still credited in Sonic Origins when you finish Sonic 3 & Knuckles. :)
I think the only songs from the final version I cannot let go are Ice Cap act 1 and 2... The more I listen to Carnival Night proto and Launch Base proto, the more I love them.

Prototype Ice Cap is a really great theme as well. It's a remix of Crystal Egg zone from Sonic 2 for MS/GG, which is a really great track to begin with.

been listening to this for the past two weeks. and I find it WAY better then the MJ tracks. That said, part of me wished that SEGA should've never asked MJ or Bruxer to compose the tracks for Carnival Night, Icecap, & Launch Base Zone back then.
Otherwise Sonic 3&Knuckles would've had more ports & remained on Steam. And not having this liscense issue BS to happen.
To be honest It would have been nice if the final game had nothing but MJ's team's music in it. That way the prototype ROM would have all of Sega's music and we would have gotten all of both!
Right now we're never likely to ever hear the other 30+ MJ's team's songs

Blows the final game's act 2 out of the water. Respect to Michael Jackson's track, but Carnival Night Act 2 in the final is basically the same as Act 1. Had they used this as an Act 2, it would have made Act 2 stick out more, although the flooded section and the power outage do help to make Act 2 distinct. I think a completely new song like this would have worked way better than the barely modified version of Act 1 we ended up getting. At least this was used in the PC port, even if it was shitty MIDIs lmao.

Carnival Night prototype theme is definately more fun. The final Carnival Night theme sound like generic circus music. I respect and am a fan of Michael Jackson, but seriously, why did he and his sound team took that direction with his version of Carnival Night? I appreciate the Jam reference though. It also doesn't help that every MJ and Sound Team Act 2 tracks are just Act 1 but some instrumentation cut off. But yeah, the prototype Carnival Night theme is much better.
