Welcome to my tiny Parisian apartment. My apartment is called a chambre de bonne - or maid's chambers - but it's not the usual place for a chambre de bonne to be placed (usually they're attached to the main apartment of the family in question). My apartment is in a small building nearby, so it's pretty well separated.
My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa and hoping to make the city of light my home base - at least for the foreseeable future. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much.

    FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? On and off for over three years.

You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life

What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGear...
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off UA-cam? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $1/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jays...
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. This is the US one: amzn.to/2ykS9Ux

Watch how fast your plant will grow. The mirror will reflect the light. Wait until christmas when the lights are better price.

The chateau has come a long way in a few years and it looks simply marvelous! It has a nice feel to it. Good luck with the overhead light. About two years ago, Sharon and I met up with you and some of your friends at a bar in Montmartre. We'd mentioned that we were moving to Spain, and here we are as of 7 months ago and living with children-in-laws in a small house in the small town of El Casar, about 30 minutes northeast of Madrid. Jay put a piece of paper or cloth in between the ceiling light and your cloud bed. Then you will get reflected or diffused light instead of blinding white “ in your face” light. Simple tape or duct tape can suspend this diffuser temporarily until you figure out the best material and shape to achieve the desired resultant lighting. Try making a box and taping the center of each of the four sides to the side of the ceiling light fixture. Leave space for heat to escape the fixture. Then cut out flaps in the sides of the box to direct light around you. Think of it as functional art. The color of the insides of the box will tone the reflected light- use it!

This apartment is a definite step up from what it used to look like. I remember you were sleeping on a mattress on the floor. You have done a great job decorating. It does look really cozy. That glass wall at the top of the shower was a brilliant idea and it looks very chic. Thankfully you have a really nice bathroom and you are so fortunate to have a portable washer. That would be horrible if you had to try and get out to the laundromat with what is going on. I especially love the very large window. Mirrors strategically placed could give the feeling of more space and also bring in more light. Keep your spirits up and stay safe.

Thanks for your tour! I agree with a previous poster---mirrors. I've heard that in some places like Amsterdam etc in the 17 and 1800s a smallish mirror on an adjustable armature was placed next to the window. More light could be directed into the room and the person seated in the room could also see more of the street life....Also, small mirrors in frames opposite the window at the far end might draw more light in and 'expand' the space.
You've done a super job with the amount of space you have.

Might be late, but if you haven't solved the issue already, an idea for that overly bright light above the bed, is to maybe stick a piece of darker coloured fabric on it (with either glue or velcro) to create a dimmer coloured glow. Using velcro, you could even constantly change the fabric circles to different colours.

Regarding the bright white light, you can hang fabric across the ceiling and it creates a shade. Use a fabric you love, you have lots of patterns in your space so maybe something that jives with those.

You can try to put your fan near on the table and blow the cool air from bottom to the loft direction, for the power cord extension, you can get use of 2 cable tie and one wall hook to dangle it on the wall next to your bed. IMO.

@@nisacornforth2740 I know it seems cute and funny at first, but it's really really nothing like prison and what people go through in there, especially countries like the US with unsanitary and dangerous conditions. In our own tiny apartments even in quarantine, although simple it's very comfortable and luxurious to our own specifications, and we have privacy and safety. I even have a bread maker, mini oven, instruments, a nice window, plants, cozy lighting, comfy bed, computer and stuff, cook and sleep when I want, play games, talk to friends and family, my own clean shower and toilet, and I can go out on my bike to get stuff when needed, I have masks, sanitizer.. it's *nothing* like prison.

Well put together chateau! Could you put a small clamp on light on the railing for the bed up top? I can't abide overhead lights either! Also I have the same tiny shower prob as you. I just double the shower curtain on the rings so no messing around cutting the curtain. Stay safe and healthy and enjoy your abode sir.

I really wanted to build a storage shelf off the end for water bottles etc, but it'll have to wait. Clipping on a light sounds like a great idea (as does double-curtaining). Stay safe out there too!

Love it! Such a great use of the space!! How well the sofa fits is deeply satisfying! I used to live in 12sqm in Sydney so I fully appreciate how much work went into your chateau!! If I may make a suggestion, I notice there is nothing above your front door, if you add a mirror it would bounce the light from your current window & you could frame it out so it looks like a second window.

For the ceiling light, cover it with rice paper, amazon has a product that doesn't use glue, I put it on windows for privacy. If you can get a dimmer switch installed, that might work, it depends on the bulb the fixture uses. Good luck

Nice! I have a shower too small for a regular shower curtain, but I like it that way. The shower is not too small and I get 2 shower curtains for the price of one. The 2nd half is folded and put up in the linen closet waiting to replace the first half when I am ready to throw it out. I used the wraps to mount a power strip to husband's hospital bed. Works great. I will admit that I never considered using underwear to hold it in place. Very creative! I suspect that watching you put the Lego Arch d' Triumphe(sic) together might be akin to watching paint dry, I wouldn't mind seeing the occasional update or if you are a Lego Wiz and can do it in half a day then a time lapse video would be fun. Actually, a time lapse of each sitting and working on it to include in your vlogs would be great!
