Congratulations on the new setup. I have been an Olympus, and now OM-Systems, shooter since August 2017. I sold all my Canon gear, full frame, to do it and I do not regret that decision. You will love this system.
There are of course Canon EOS models that do focus bracketing, and mirrorless models that also do in-body stacking. But to my knowledge they all fall short. My Canon EOS 90D does focus bracketing, but it suppresses the external flash (not sure why). So I use slow burst mode with the flash and simply move to focus bracket. I get along with it just fine, but I won't be doing a large # of frames for a stack. I had also rented the Canon mirrorless R7, and that will do focus bracketing but apparently ONLY at 30 frames / sec. Again, no external flash can keep up with it. During hand-held focus bracketing under ambient light,, small camera movements result in a weird rolling shutter like effect so the images cannot stack properly. Stacking works well from a fixed mount like on a tripod, though. If you are looking for an experiment to try, I suggest you try to see if you can do hand held focus bracketing with the R7 to see if it works for you (I don't believe the problem is ME since I do good stacks with other cameras). Perhaps you can add your prominent voice to call out Canon for this deficiency. I don't know if Canon has a model that works for hand held focus bracketing + external flash, but I have not found one.
Thanks for these comments - I'm using the Canon R7 with the RF 100mm macro lens and a Godox flash/diffuser. I was really hoping the flash issue with bracketing will be fixed with the R7 mark ii if they release one, but we'll see.
I switched from Canon to Olympus a while ago - I’ll be 80 later this year and can’t carry the huge, heavy gear around any more!. I love the system! So many brilliant features and, as you say, perfect for macro. I haven’t found anything it doesn’t excel at. Your mini spiddys look wonderful.
This camera as well as the III and the OM1 are just truly amazing cameras for macro. The 60mm is a great lens and omg you have to try the 90mm macro. A dream! Welcome to the OM SYSTEM/Olympus family!
Nice, I shoot with an OM Systems OM-1 and mostly do field macro stuff, the small size and weight are a blessing. The 40-150 f2.8 is also brilliant at getting shots of bugs that are likely to fly off, as it's the equivalent of an 80-300mm tele in terms of field of view and has a relatively small working distance of 1.3m. A great system for Macro.
@@StewartWoodArt it’s amazing, if you’re focused on focus stacking, it’s the way to go. Though the 60mm is a fantastic lens also, will be curious how you find the working distance.
Way to go Stewart, I bought all my Olympus gear from MPB couldn't be more pleased with their service and assessment of quality. All my gear I purchased like new and I think some of it was but at used prices, no regrets at all
This video couldn’t have been released at a better time I’m looking at buying this exact setup in the coming weeks and you’ve just confirmed everything I was already thinking. Love the outdoor macro walk videos keep ‘em coming!
Nice video Stewart and welcome to the dark side! “Toy Camera”??? What every user of Olympus & OMDS pro gear will tell you is that the build quality & weather sealing is second to none. Add to that the extensive feature set, best in the business IBIS and superb glass you will soon come to realise that you have largely wasted a lot of time using any other system for macro, better late than never, though!!!…..
I drank the Olympus Kool-Aid several years ago-after being a 40 year Canon user. Far more great features in a delightfully small and lightweight package. I’m all in with no regrets! So happy for you 😁
I just picked up an identical kit and waiting for another (smaller) diffuser from Brendan. TheOM focus bracketing, weight difference and that 60mm micro means that my R5 be gathering dust...at least until the cold weather set in. I really enjoy your content. Thank you!
You are absolutely approaching this with the right mindset. Yes the FF has a slight edge in low light, but nothing that can’t be overcome. I’ve been in m4/3 to FF and back again. The E-M1.2 is a powerhouse and is priced so low right now it’s the perfect way to add m4/3 as a complement to another system. The trade value was so low I ended up keeping mine when upgrading to the OM-1. Find a used RRS L bracket. That little extra grip of the bottom plate will change the entire handling of the camera for the better. The vertical grips are cheap as chips now too. Welcome to the enlightenment.
I upgraded to The R6 a while ago, available 2nd hand from mpb, does focus stacking superbly. Last year i sold my laowa 100mm & bought the canon rf 100mm together with the R6 gives superb results. Obviously costs more than the olympus set up but I'm worth it 😊
Great video Stewart. As a Canon shooter myself I did the same thing 1 month ago except I got the OM-1 and 90mm Macro. I love the combo. The menu system is a learning curve but with youtube there is a wealth of tutorials out there. Micael Widell has also been trying out the OM system for Macro.
Hi Stewart , i've had Full Frame & crop over the yrs , bought a MK ii 3 or 4yrs ago & love every thing about it , one of my favorites is pro/cap & also live bulb & live comp , happy shooting matey
Have just bought the same model, the menu system takes some learning. Only downside is have found but once you have the camera set up to your needs you won't need it
I have both Nikon and Canon digital systems as well as some very high-end rangefinder and medium format film cameras. Three years ago I bought into the Olympus MFT system, nothing crazy and all used and only what I needed. If you look at the numbers, MFT doesn't make sense, but the results say something else. It is a very capable but under rated system. It has its limitations, but not for 95% of all photographers. I think a lot of photographers try and compensate for lack of talent by buying expensive stuff and use them as a badge of credibility.
Olympus is no joke!! fantastic camera & lenses and by the looks of these shots, i stand firm imho😊 only thing i did not get along with when i shot (owned 1st edition EM-5) was the darn menu system & wording 😝😝 otherwise, great light weight travel / hike plus everything else you want to capture gear. I still occasionally toy with the idea of purchasing another body and few lenses, macro lens being a definite choice to have in the kit! happy clicking & creating!!
Hi Stewart. Wow, changing brands, what a surprise! Back in the 1970s, Olympus was the king of macro with their innovative dual flash unit. Nice to see them back in the game. (BTW, my nickname is one word, using camelback style: BugBob).
Welcome to the 4/3rds world, how come you have took so long to get here. Great cameras and excellent lenses at resonable prices. Not a toy but a very accomplished system.
You’re going to luv this system Stuwart.. got the OM1 and 60mm with Raynox 250. Looking forward to watching your journey…. interesting learning curve by the way.. steepish😂
I started with Canon and was disappointed, changed to Panasonic Lumix and would never change. Brilliant system. I will probably, at some point, add an Olympus OM1 at some point in the future to complete my system.
Hi Stewart there is a new release from om system last January with the new 90mm (180mm equivalent full frame) macro lens with 2:1 magnification and ability to add a 2x converter with 4x magnification feels like 8x at full frame it's just amazing, but still expensive about 1500€/$./£
My first ‘serious’ camera was an Olympus OM- DE mkll , chosen for the lightness of handling as I’m 86 … I upped to a mk lll 2 years ago , but the menu is driving me mad, so I’m back to the mk ll . I love macro photography and have the 60mm lens . Had a fall and broke my hip so no photography for two years. Just getting back into the swing again - inspiration helped greatly by your videos!
Aparrently some camera's are bigger than others :) Glad it arrived in once piece, couldn't get better than my old Olympus microscope, hope it serves you well.
Looks like a very interesting move and your results are stunning. I have the Canon R5 but unfortunately the firmware focus stacking won't allow for flash to be used, as that feature uses a 20fps burst. I feel like I have too much Canon gear to change setup now.
Excellent video and channel (new subscriber today!) two questions if I may? Can you look through the viewfinder (or view the screen) while you are shooting the focus stacks/brackets? On my Nikon Z9 it’s got a great focus stack feature but the major downfall is you have to go to the menu, and use the focus stacking feature from there. While it’s doing it’s thing you have the menu screens, you can’t look through the viewfinder etc. Second question: How do you not “lose” your spiders while they are out in the open? I see him on the flower on your desk, but what stops him from jumping off the desk and disappearing? Thanks for your time!
You can use the evf the same way you can with a single shot, the focus stacking does not limit you. The spiders are well fed and don’t really wonder off.
Stewart welcome to the dark side! I switched from Nikon to the EM1mk2 two years ago and am very happy with the features, weight and quality of my Olympus gear!
I bought the canon r6 mkii a few weeks back specifically because it had built in focus stacking among other features i wanted. It works brilliantly. I'm taking 12-15,000 images per project and just keeping the composited result while binning the rest. Saves me a ton of work. Very happy.
The focus stacking on the R6.2 is awesome! Unfortunately it cannot be done with flash. The Olympus can stack with flash, unfortunately though only 8-15 images depending on the model. And Olympus doesn't allow the multi image delete like Canon. Alas, there is no perfect camera. But the OM-1 is close.
@Nathen Danforth yes unfortunately I have to use a ring led, but my subjects are static, so it just means a longer exposure. It uses its rolling electronic shutter, which apparently is the reason it can't trigger a flash, and Canon has said that the mechanical shutter could be enabled in a future firmware release, but I doubt that will happen. The composite image generated is a jpeg and I use that to identify the batch of images I want to keep. I shoot in RAW knowing that the sub shots are not what I want. So i grab the jpegs and quick reformat or erase everything else. I don't think the camera can auto erase the images used to create the composite. This is the best workflow I've found. However if I'm missing something in terms of auto deleting the RAWS, please let me know. All help and advice is grarefully received. I'm new to this.
@@Notagain640 say the stack failed. The jpeg comes out all wonky and you know you won't want any of the raws in the sequence. Just hit delete (on one of the raws preceding the jpeg) while in playback and a prompt will pop up that asks if you want to delete all the images in the sequence. If you're shooting a lot of stacks it saves you a ton of time sorting through the failures later.
@Nathen Danforth yes, I discovered this by accident and used it extensively to start with. Now I'm using a Manfrotto genie to auto index so I no longer have chance to use this feature because I set it going and leave for 10-15 mins to take all the shots before the next setup. My 128GB card fills up quickly but it just means I have to take images off every 40 mins or so.
Fun video. You might consider adding extension tubes to your kit. Meike makes a pair that are quite reasonable in price. They work well with the 60mm macro.
@@StewartWoodArt That is fine if you always want that extreme xof capability. But a pair or extension tubes are helpful for those times when you might want just a little more out of the 60mm but not 2X. The Meike ones I mentioned are plastic have the one to camera body electrical contacts and are only around $30. I didn't mention that Laowa makes a 50mm 2X Macro 4/3. It is $400 here in the US. It is manual focus but does have contacts so you do get the f stop info. Finally, try the 2X teleconverter setting on your EM II. Even with the drop in resolution it is useful.
I have the exact same set up with a Pope Diffuser. If I want more dynamic range and better resolution, I bring out my Nikon D850 that does focus bracketing and the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro Lens. Hard to beat 45 Mega Pixels. Cheers!!!
Great video Stewart. I have been using the EM1 Mk2 with the 60mm macro lens for several years now. I am saving up to buy the 90mm macro lens but at $2000 Canadian dollars that is a ways down the road. Love your videos so please keep them coming.
Hi Steward! I use a Canon eos 70d with a Sigma 105 macro lens. Of course no focus bracketing, let alone stacking with this one. Have you any idea if the Sigma lens would work on such a OM body? Thanks a lot for all your inspirational videos! You are my reference point youtuber when it comes to macro-photography 👍
Nice setup you got there! If you ever get the opportunity, it would be nice to see how the cropped Canon R range compares. I have been eyeing a R50 myself with a nice 15fps and built in focus bracketing even though I still love the look of single shots over massive stacks
Hi Steward! Great video and congratulation for having new camera. I want ask you any luck using Godox MF12 twin flash with focus stacking in camera? My MF12 lag so much that I can’t use it with focus stacking in camera. My camera is OM-1. Thank you
I was wondering when a macro shooter like yourself would try Olympus. The E-M1 mark ii is shocking value for the money and is a stunning all-rounder for a variety of genres, from low-light to wildlife to street to macro and beyond.
Nice timing. Am looking to make te switch just for macro. Have the eos r7 now and this has the features of stacking and bracketing. Would you still choose the olympus om 1 mark ii above this canon?
@@StewartWoodArt well i tried lots of setting. 1/50 1/80 1/100 shutter speed and flash power from 1/32 1/64 1/128 but got no flash when bracketing. Looks like the canon can't trigger the flash or am i missing something
Moot point, not mute point. Hello from North America. 😂 On a more serious note, I swapped to OM systems for my macro only, and couldn't be happier. It does feel like a toy.
This is very interesting and quite timely, because I've been told by foks on a Canon forum, that you can't use flash with in-camera focus bracketing/stacking, auto-focus, yet you are doing it. I've the Canon R10. Is this ONLY becaase you're using a different brand?
The eosR was made before Canon decided to impliment focus bracketing as a feature , as it was their first mirrorless.Simple as that. So its a bit like saying Ford failed me because my 1980s Cortina doesnt have stability management.......Everythings got to start some time!
Hola amigo me encanta tus videos. Acabo de comprar una olympus om-d e-m1 mark ii , el 60 mm macro y el flash v350o todo de segunda mano . Solo espero que llegue pronto a Valdivia sur de Chile. Saludos y gracias por tus videos que me hacen aprender.
Stewart huge fan as always. I currently shoot with canon R5 cameras and want to have an OM system for macro. Why did you go with the E-M1 mark ii instead of the OM-1?
@@StewartWoodArt I ended up buying a used E-M1 mark ii also! About the same price you did! I’ve purchased the 60mm Zuiko macro and can’t wait for it to arrive. Have you tried the 90mm OM macro yet?
Did your mate Don Komarechka put you up to trying M4/3? He used Panasonics I think. Strange timing because I’ve been thinking along the exact same lines recently. It seems to me to be win win for macro.
I didn't want to buy a new camerra just for one feature that could have been addeed via firmware, that's why i opted for the M34 system so I can explore this system more.
Hi, Steward. This is a choice you never regret. I have the Lumix G9 also Micro 43 and I love it. The extra depth of field is just amazing. I also do a lot of macro work myself. The 60 mm Zuiko lens is small but a beast in results. I hope you have a lot of fun with your Micro 43 Olympus. PS. I have an Olympus OM10 mark 3 as a backup camera. Stunning video, man. Greetings from the Netherlands, Antoine.
Stewart ... I am very disappointed in this video's title. "Canon Failed Me" Canon did not fail you but they do not offer in camera focus stacking, which is apparently a desire of yours. Good for you. Please understand that folks like you, and your videos and may be swayed to make decisions based on your reports. All camera systems have issues for example Olympus = major noise issues when using in low light / Laowa lenses = questionable build quality issues. If you will discuss the positives and the negatives of a camera system you will be doing your viewers and Patreons a favor ...... transparency and full disclosure goes a long ways
Canon is one of the best when it comes to Macro specifically. The new RF Canon 100mm Marco lens is out of this world! You can even change the boka size/edging. Also their are so many different macro lenses for the price ranges from the entry level all the way to the new RF macro and my by far favorite macro lens the MPE 65mm 1x-5x with the twin light flash. Yeah you are staying in your price range if that is your restriction but saying that "Canon failed you" on macro photography is crazy and makes you sound like you just don't know any better and I know that is not true. But you did get a good click bait title if that is the type of creator your okay with being. It works and this is a business so that is good and to each their own. Macro is my favorite type of photography but their is no way I personally would grab that camera for my macro work.
@@StewartWoodArt The title of the video , You can't blame a brand . As i also use Canon . One has to learn to adapt without .A stacked sensor isn't the be all and end all . I have a 850D / / 90D .. use them both with a laowa 100mm x2 . And i never use a diffuser ethier .
And I bet you didn’t watch the whole video or if you did you wasn’t paying attention. I said I want to show/teach focus bracketing and stacking, both manual and auto… I can’t show auto bracketing IF YHE CANERA CANT DO IT. Lmao

I honestly don't think extenstion tubes are needed on this system. With the Raynox DCR 250 I can get a 3X magnification.
Cheers!!!
Megapixels are good but not what I look for in a system.
...and 45kgs!!
Impressive results! I will save money to buy a system like that.
You won’t regret it.
Great video Stewart. I have been using the EM1 Mk2 with the 60mm macro lens for several years now. I am saving up to buy the 90mm macro lens but at $2000 Canadian dollars that is a ways down the road. Love your videos so please keep them coming.
Thank you.
Great camera and very impressive pictures
Thanks mate.
Nice video Stewart. I’m waiting for your next video on this topic 😊
Coming soon!
I’m a canon user. After looking at so many videos, especially yours, I just thought to give it a try. So, I brought the same kit from MPB.
Nice, let me know how you get on.
Thank you, You can fit EF lenses onto M4/3 using an adapter, no idea how well it will work.
I'm thinking about switching from Canon just trying to decide between Canon R7 or OM-1, both are excellent cameras so not an easy choice.
I've not used the R7 or OM-1 yet.
I am not certain, but I don't think that the R7 can use flash with focus bracketing. Something to check if you need this.
Even The Spider said wow in the background 😂
Lmao
@@StewartWoodArt please do a video on how you taught it to speak English. Ground breaking. 😂
Nice setup you got there! If you ever get the opportunity, it would be nice to see how the cropped Canon R range compares. I have been eyeing a R50 myself with a nice 15fps and built in focus bracketing even though I still love the look of single shots over massive stacks
I'd love to take a look but unfortunately with me having a small channel I can't aford to buy the cameras for testing.
Hi Steward! Great video and congratulation for having new camera. I want ask you any luck using Godox MF12 twin flash with focus stacking in camera? My MF12 lag so much that I can’t use it with focus stacking in camera. My camera is OM-1. Thank you
Afraid not as my Canon EOS R does not have focus stacking and from what I've read the Canon cameras can't trigger the flash when doing focus stacking.
Nice video and great information! It might be in bright outdoor sunlight without the flash or even with it the subject may be less likely to move.
I was wondering when a macro shooter like yourself would try Olympus. The E-M1 mark ii is shocking value for the money and is a stunning all-rounder for a variety of genres, from low-light to wildlife to street to macro and beyond.
I'm very impressed so far.
Nice timing. Am looking to make te switch just for macro. Have the eos r7 now and this has the features of stacking and bracketing. Would you still choose the olympus om 1 mark ii above this canon?
Yes I would, most Canon cameras can’t trigger the flash while doing focus bracketing. I would check your R7 first to see if it can trigger the flash.
@@StewartWoodArt well i tried lots of setting. 1/50 1/80 1/100 shutter speed and flash power from 1/32 1/64 1/128 but got no flash when bracketing. Looks like the canon can't trigger the flash or am i missing something
I think it is because the Canon uses mechanical shutter to trigger a flash and Focus bracketing is done with the electronic shutter.
@@alandimery3379 thanks. I can change this in the eos r7 so will try that.
Are you happy with your r7? I want to upgrade my old 500d. I like macro in the field.
Can you please repeat - in writing - what that diffuser is, please? 6:56 I would love to look into it!!! Thanks a lot! 🤗
That's a crafty bells diffuser, they are no longer in business.
I love the images :) (i have only praise for MPB)
Thanks mate
Moot point, not mute point. Hello from North America. 😂 On a more serious note, I swapped to OM systems for my macro only, and couldn't be happier. It does feel like a toy.
Nice.
This is very interesting and quite timely, because I've been told by foks on a Canon forum, that you can't use flash with in-camera focus bracketing/stacking, auto-focus, yet you are doing it. I've the Canon R10.
Is this ONLY becaase you're using a different brand?
I use the Olympus for my insect macro photography for that reason, in-camera focus bracketing with a flash.
@@StewartWoodArt Thank you
I have the EM1 mkIII with the 60mm and its a beast trust me, my canon R6 is gathering dust for a while now.
Sorry for your R6 lmao
Is the weight comparison including the extra grip on Canon? If yes it's a bit apples to oranges comparison...
Yes it is because is my old rig vs the new rig.
How did you setup the flash, I presume you had to set the interval for the flash to charge
I just set it to 1/32 power and it keeps up.
I have gone through the exact same experience 😂
Good to know and keep the videos coming :)
To photograph small creatures in macro, you only need a small camera 😂 - Impressive results!
I know right lol
AND… wait till you try the witchcraft Pro Capture.. mind blowing, takes pictures for you before you press the shutter 😂😂
Stewart huge fan as always. I currently shoot with canon R5 cameras and want to have an OM system for macro. Why did you go with the E-M1 mark ii instead of the OM-1?
Price, a second hand E-M1 mk 2 was only £380.
@@StewartWoodArt I ended up buying a used E-M1 mark ii also! About the same price you did! I’ve purchased the 60mm Zuiko macro and can’t wait for it to arrive. Have you tried the 90mm OM macro yet?
Not yet, for some reason OM systems don’t want to work with me so I can’t get my hands on one unless I buy it.
@@StewartWoodArt they’re missing out! Hopefully they will change their mind soon
Question is, where do you get those Spiders from? I want one!
You can get them online for at trade shows.
Did your mate Don Komarechka put you up to trying M4/3? He used Panasonics I think. Strange timing because I’ve been thinking along the exact same lines recently. It seems to me to be win win for macro.
No he didn't, it was a decision I made for the channel.
Welcome to the darkside. I am looking forward to seeing your shots, Cygnustech Diffuser is a great piece of equipment,
Dark AND noisy.
🙋🏻♂️🇪🇦 Estoy seguro que notarás el cambio.
ya tengo
As a longtime user of Olympus cameras from the OM-2n back in 83 to last year getting the e-m1 mk iii, just wanted to welcome you to the darkside :)
Thank you 😊
Do you have Tripod in your DNA? Super steady hand holding!
Goodbye laowa 100mm for my Sony to go towards an olympus set up then 😂 great vid and loving the new spider shots on Instagram
Thank you.
welcome to the OM Family
Thanks
3 inches is giant...you get in there mate...
it's very strange that Canon hasn't yet added the ability to shoot focus stacking with the flash
Very strange but my EOS R can’t even focus bracket at all.
Does the camera merge the pictures? 😅
Lovely video
Thanks
I traded my Canon 5Dmk4 for a Sony A7c with a Laowa 100mm 2.8 2:1 macro lens!
Welcome to the dark side of MFT :D
Thank you my friend.
what about EOS RP? It has focus stacking
I didn't want to buy a new camerra just for one feature that could have been addeed via firmware, that's why i opted for the M34 system so I can explore this system more.
Canon focus bracketing can not use other flashes.. you can only use very very expensive EL-1
@@김민우-c5o2g Interesting. I thought not even the EL-1 would work since focus bracketing uses the electronic shutter.
Susbcribed.... Cause Olympus / OMsystem is Great!!!
Thank you for the support.
Come on Stewart just because Olympus sponsored you, you dont have to say Canon failed you.
You will do good with any camera.
True but Olympus hasn’t sponsored me lol.
@@StewartWoodArt hahaha I trust you.
Believe me, if they was to “sponsor” me it would be hard not to say no 🤪
@@StewartWoodArt we will surely see you soon with OM1 system.
The mark II is a 7 seven year camera...
I know, relised that after making the video.
I just couldn't do it. Its Olympus for goodness sake. Have people no self esteem ? Its not OMD, its OMG !! 😂
What? Lmao
@@StewartWoodArtSorry. Couldn't resist. 😂
Greetings from the Netherlands,
Antoine.
Am I the only one who's wondering if spiders can get epilitic fits and/or see's in strobe effect during this.
Yes you are. 😂. You sound unhinged.
I’ll test that out lol
Do they make spider sized lightsticks
@@RogerS1978 depends on the size of the spider. 🙅
The title is fine as Canon failed “ME” not “you” or “us” and I have been talking about the positives for years.
Canon 90d......3 inches ...massive😂😂😂
Spelling failed you. So i liked your video.
lol
lol 😂 ❤
Canon failed you? You can't be serious,.
Lol yep 👍
I sold my MP-E 65mm to get this camera for the channel, I needed to explore the M43 system for macro photography.
Blame the canera but never blame yourself lol
Ha ha how can I be at fault when the camera can’t do focus bracketing or stacking at all? Answer that one!
@@StewartWoodArt i do macro . I can surive without the need to stack images ...
But you didn’t answer the question? How is it my fault if the camera can’t do auto focus bracketing or stacking?
@@StewartWoodArt The title of the video , You can't blame a brand . As i also use Canon . One has to learn to adapt without .A stacked sensor isn't the be all and end all . I have a 850D / / 90D .. use them both with a laowa 100mm x2 . And i never use a diffuser ethier .
And I bet you didn’t watch the whole video or if you did you wasn’t paying attention. I said I want to show/teach focus bracketing and stacking, both manual and auto… I can’t show auto bracketing IF YHE CANERA CANT DO IT. Lmao
