  • ABOUT THE SCORE: The haphazard nature of composer John Scott's career has seem his score a wide berth of films, some quality, many not so much. Despite a dearth of production funds, this 1998 Thomas Hardy adaptation of the titular novel has a handsome look and noble intent, and the filmmakers wisely employed Scott to provide a very "English" and melodic score of sufficient scope for the film. Anchored by a ubiquitous love theme of extremely long-lined eloquence, it is not the composer's most ravishing or dramatically astute achievement, but it carries extremely memorable progressions and carries the requisitely sense of doomed, forbidden romance. Secondary romanic ideas abound but the main theme is never far from recapitulation. This is a very fine, if relatively tame, work in this composer's prolific 1990's output alongside similarly "English" scores like "Mill on the Floss" or the superb "Shooting Party".
The painting is "A Pastoral Landscape with Shepherds and their Flocks" by George Lambert; it has no correlation with the source material nor music beyond the evocation of a moody, if lovely, countryside atmosphere.
