Remember it’s not a zoo, just by being there is great already and you just said it, it’s great being in the Kruger park

Loved the episode. After a hard days drive ,there is nothing more satisfying than making a braai and relaxing outside with a glass of red wine or a beer. And the meat tastes much better than on the frying pan!
The Brit in you just didnt grow up with it!

Absolutely agree that the braii is a cultural thing. Probably never caught on in the UK as we don't like sitting about in the rain!

Forget to to thank you for being so gentle with me! I've had to remove one or two not so nice comments from people who I suspect are leaders of the Ancient Order of The Protection of the Braii!

Beautiful Sable antelope sighting, looked like a very healthy young bull. And, thanks for taking us along the Sable Trail at Pretoriuskop! That was really interesting.

@@oldcodgerwithacamera I've seen Sable most between Skukuza and Satara, specifically the area between Mantimahle/Jones se Dam, Manzimhlope, and Muzandzeni picnic spot.

Looks like you did pretty good for Pretoriuskop with leopard, wild dogs, hyena and that gorgeous Sable. We love this area because of the scenery, it’s not crowded and the chance to see the more rare antelope like Sable. Love this video series, sad to see it coming to and end.

Pretoriuskop is indeed a lovely area although the sightings can be a bit hit or miss but we always head that way even if not staying at the camp. New Kruger series starts in a few days!

Thanks for sharing. I've been to the Kruger 41 times in my life. Always found Satara has the most game. Pretorioskop is pretty and has a nice pool. But Kruger is my favourite place to visit

Very nice indeed. I spent six months in the Kruger back in 2001 and spent a week or two at most of the rest camps. There’s a bench with my late partner’s name on it at the lookout point in Olifants. She absolutely loved the park and I miss going there with her.

So glad you enjoyed it. I do hope you are able to get back there at some time for another visit. We are trying to pack in as many trips as we can before the inevitable ageing process makes it too difficult to travel.

Braai is a South African culture thing. Some skill as with any cooking required. Suggest you get a local and ask him to braai. Second best part of the braai is to " kuier " around the fire. We love the smoke smell on the meat and yes even our clothes 😀 but that is why you shower before going to bed.

Great episode! Pretoruiskop area is really a hit or miss type of camp. For me it is usually a miss. If you're not enjoying a braai you are doing it wrong 🙂. Long story short, It's complicated.. Rule nr1, don't use charcoal 🙂

I do like Pretoriuskop as a camp but, as you say it's usually more miss than hit. We had to drive virtually to Skukuza for any decent sightings so could have easily just stayed there. I'm sure I have a lot to learn about the mysteries of the braii! As I said I get the romance of it but not the cooking part. One thing I did notice at Pretoriuskop is that a few people just lit the braii for the ambience and didn't acxtaully cook anything.

May/June. We had previously visited in September/October and wanted to try a different season where the bush was more green. It turned out to be much quieter, game wise, than any of our previous trips so the only thing we wish we had done differently was not to go at that time of year!

I used a GoPro Hero 5 mounted on the windscreen but the quality on that can be a bit hit and miss. I think the later ones are better or the DJI Osmo Action. For talking to camera and some side shots I used a DJI Pocket 2 and for the wildlife video a Canon M50 with a 50-200mm lens. Finally for still photography I use a Canon 7D Mk II with a Sigma 150-600mm lens. A lot of gear but acquired over many years!

We're with you on the braai thing....but then with only 10 days in the park, we were just too busy or tired, much easier to use the restaurant or like you said, frying pan ha! Just seems so much of a faff. As for the wild dogs, gee, never realised they peed so much.

    • @oldcodgerwithacamera
      @oldcodgerwithacamera  Рік тому +1

I still love the romanticism of the braii but, like you, we are often too tired in the evening to really enjoy it. As for the dogs I didn't really notice at the time but, watching the video, it looks more like it's an elephant peeing than a dog!
