I play trumpet want to make a disclaimer that I have played the Trumpet for 20 years and these guys are freaks (especially Eric and Wayne, that sound!) but that Tenor sax solo blew me away!
A sax player myself, always wondered how hard it is to reach this highest notes in this piece on the trumpet. I remember there was a rumour, at least in my part of the world, that Maynard Ferguson had passed away in the 80ies cos of pressure in the brain from playing the high notes. Was lucky to see him later, in Bangkok, touring with US university students.
I've got tears in my eyes right now......I remember Maynard at DCI making a comment on my range.....still to this day my proudest moment. Thanks guys for bringing back some incredible memories.
Wayne kills them all! His solid, steady, open sound, his safety to hit the tone right in the center, his coolness, phrasing and last but not least his enormous musicality are outstanding!
Everytime I hear this video with wayne and eric miyashiro I want to pick up my trumpet. They are probably the most amazing trumpet players I have ever hear.
the more I watch this video, the more I enjoy it. Eric, holding his hand in the air mimicing Maynard, and Patrick pushing the trumpet away after sustaining a high note like Maynard did... Wayne was amazing. God Bless Maynard Ferguson!
Funny, as good as these cats are, Maynard was in a totally different league! The sound, the power in his playing not to mention longevity was truly amazing! There are tons of guys who can play rocky at hit the "notes", but Maynard didn't make it sound high. He owned the upper register and played masterfully with noone his equal! Man I miss the "Boss".
I played trumpet for twenty years. My friends threw a big party to celebrate when I finally gave up the instrument and became a writer. Writing is much quieter they told me. I listen to this every morning at least once to get my emotional juices going in high gear. The philosopher Frederick Nietzsche said that life without music would be a mistake. I totally agree.
Vi esse vídeo quando eu tinha uns 12 anos (quando eu ainda tocava trompete) agora resolvi voltar aqui novamente depois de 10 anos para “curtir” essa obra prima🔥
1:01 Oh my gosh. Playing with such good tone in that range is what always has been unimaginable to me. That was an amazing solo, sir. 2:35 is just as good, too. I'm baffled! Had another listen: That tenor sax solo is another well done one. So pleasing to listen to!
I was there for this and it was AMAZING!!! Even if there was something dubbed in the video, it was still amazing in person! These guys are really good!
This is a great tibute to the "Boss" I must have seen Maynard over 50 times from 1974 right up until he passed away. Maynard and Blood Sweat and Tears were my two favorite bands in high school. My brother and I got to meet him after a show in Providence, R.I. one night. He was a great, down to earth human being . His trumpet playing goes without saying. You always looked forward to a M.F. Concert. The great musicians, the great arrangements, and the medley. R.I.P. Maynard. You are not forgotten.
I love watching this video. The three "leads" are playing in a similar fashion to Maynard, and in Maynard's later years, he played in a manner similar to what Patrick was doing. I am amazed by all three guys, what a pleasure it must have been to be there.
Rhenzie Gandia of CAVITE Cavaliers Philippines love your music..He is a musician too.. He died almost one week ago. We all remembered his music into our heart.. May you rest in Kingdom of God BLUE RHENZIE GANDIA 😭😔😭😭
yo naci en 1976, este tema es parte de mi, comencé con el, veo la película, escucho el tema y me emociona hasta las celulas... amo este singular capitulo de mi vida.
LOL notice how Wayne is the only soloist out of the three (Hession, Wayne, Miyashiro) who isn't playing into a microphone, yet he still projects better than anyone on stage! Wayne's the best lead player alive IMHO.
One of the best film music composers I have ever had the pleasure of listening to: Bill Conti. He was the Rocky of film score writers, he always had The Right Stuff.
As someone there that night, I must say it was one of the best music nights of my life. And for all the people here that want to complain about any of the players showboating, please don't forget that they were trained by the BEST showboater of them all. And I say that with great respect.
I don't know why a lot of people like to dump on Patrick hession. He is a professional lead trumpet player he played lead for Ferguson 6 years. You don't suck if you play leave for Maynard for 6 years. Now when he's in the upper register this sound is a little raspy that a little something weird to it he's not as full and fat as Eric is but trust me guys the cat can play and if you had a band you'd want him in it.
Really cool. The energy of the players and the crowd is awesome, and I dig the sax solo. It is amazing that the stage doesn't collapse under that many trumpet player egos though lol
first of all, eric miyashiro is way more humble and his tone is way better than hessions, even if hession can scream some semi audible notes that dont sound good at all.
@Ben Bailey I am not sure why you are referring to Hession as an egotistical douche. When he bowed and shakes hands, he was merely getting into the moment and enjoying the recognition the crowd gave him. You can not blame him, magic was happening on the stage and different people react different ways to recognition. Miyashiro not bowing doesn't inherently make him more humble, it just means he reacts to admiration and praise differently than Hession.
Today, I was about to fall down... but this song... after many years since I heard it for the very first time... still comes and saves me. Thanks guys. U are like family to me.
Wow, what a wonderful collection of musical artists making absolutely beautiful music. Love it and thanks to my good buddy 'Fast' Eddie for sending me the address to watch this magnificient video.
whoa!!!!!!! this is the shit!!! I wish I still had that register. I'm working on getting it back though. I swear it seems harder to do now that I'm old
Good grief he makes that look effortless (4:25)... what stellar talent (by all of them, not just EM). I had the fortune of being there in person for this one.
I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN SOOO AMAZED AT HOW WAYNE CAN JUST PLAY A DOUBLE A LIKE THAT! LIKE ITS NOTHING! REGARDLESS OF HOW HARD THAT NOTE IS TO PLAY FOR MOST LEAD PLAYERS!
Cant really compare the 3 because each solo style was slightly different. E showing off technicality, Wayne musicality, Patrick range. Each equally impressive.
Nobody gonna talk about that fire sax solo?
Indeed but what about the bass part of it, so catchy yet underrated
Exactly bruh
Weil es auch unwichtig ist da es alleine um die trompeter geht unter ferguson
I play trumpet want to make a disclaimer that I have played the Trumpet for 20 years and these guys are freaks (especially Eric and Wayne, that sound!) but that Tenor sax solo blew me away!
the tenor sax was just killing that solo, *mind blown*
A great solo by Mark Colby!

Few played trumpets, incredible.
i think Eric and Wayne's solos had the most soul and originality. They just sounded so awesome.
fucking a grade aint that the truth
I know this is kinda late but you do realize besides the tenor solo it's all kinda barely changed like ad lib

Maynard always had a rich full tone in the upper register.
Me gusto en la parte 4:04 cuando Erick miyashiro hace en ese arranque. Increíble

Did anyone notice that altissimo jump from the tenor that just blended in so well at 2:04 that you couldn't even tell
Its so powerful
looks like they're going bowling
Exactly what I thought! Haha
