Hi from Dundee. Thank you for this. I've had a D808 for three years and its my go to portable for holidays and travelling. Its light, sensitive and selective. It also has incredible coverage MW, LW, SW, FM (with RDS) and AIR. You can charge it with a standard phone charger. Yes. It does scratch but its pretty rugged. Mine survived a fall onto a concrete patio not long after I got it and it still works perfectly. It has its problems: watch out for the screw at the bottom of the telescopic aerial. It easily slackens and the aerial starts to wobble. If I go anywhere with it, I check that screw out. As for LW, I agree with you 100%. I wish the manufacturers of modern radios would wind a LW coil around the ferrite rod, that way I don't have to strain my hearing for RTE on 252khz, when the signal gets to the east coast of Scotland. I tend to use my aged 2001D, RF B65 or Pl660 for listening to RTE 252 and other LW stations. The ergonomics of the 808 are weird but you get used to them unlike that bright display light! Stick with it. I think that you will find it a great portable for dxing. I've subscribed and I'm looking forward to more videos. 73s and GDX
Appears to be a good deal cheaper than the tecsun for what I assume is comparable performance! For the more casual user this could be a major deciding factor when considering a purchase!
Some people and manufacturers don't quite grasp the concept of night/utility lights.. which are supposed to be used in.. you've guessed it: a dark, very low light environment.. and are.. supposed to be low power, just enough to help you discern info in the dark. Either being a flashlight/torch/lamp or a backlit display, it would suppose to be dim enough to not fuck up your night sight and just bright/powerful enough to illuminate the desired object/s of interest.. not disco or emergency service lights..
I often listen to Spirit 549 MW while driving, here in Manchester UK. Can also hear RTE R1 on 87.8 FM, in certain spots. Too faint to be usable though.
Thanks for the headsup regarding the scratchability of the case. I am duly forewarned! I've the black version... Sihuadon D-808. Stumbled across your channel via the Soviet/Latvian radio video. I've 3 or 4 of these in the basement. All made the trip out here (NZ) from Scotland about 45 years ago. Cheers & Thanks!
Yes it does seem very bright, if they are leds then a couple of series resistors would calm them down. The old grundig satalite is a nice radio, but i imagine they are hard to find now. I have an old hacker radio that i should fix up sometime, but i dont have much interest in radio at the moment. The speaker is warped as well, so ill have to do a bit of warm water dabbing. My mate ordered one of those software controlled radios with a touch screen, but the dam thing didnt show up.
I have this radio it's not a bad radio but it has not taken over my Tecsun PL-660 as my go to radio, air band is actually ok on it but if I wanna listen to airband I'll use my scanner for that!
Yeah, im visually impaired and these little damn radios don't make it for me, no matter how well reviewed they are. I need the big bulky shortwave radios and i have a number of them.
How does the analog volume stands over time? I had two Sony portable radios (both with analog tuning and volume controls) and both had developed a problem with analog controls in approximatelly 1 year. The slightest touch in volume control drastically changes volume levels. Same applies to tuning. I'm thinking about getting Retekess v115 due to its digital controls.
@Louis Williams I think so. But I would need to "debug" that situation by disassembling the radio, right? That's what I'd like to avoid, assuming the radio would be a gift for person that would surely not be disassembling the radio in order to clean internal parts. Every radio with analog controls I've personally seen had developed some malfunction on them. Yet, mouse wheels last for years here until any other mouse part develops some problem. I know internal controls of a mouse wheel and a radio volume are different, but so is reliability, at least in my case. Or maybe Xhdata D-808 has more reliable parts. That's why I'd like other users inputs. Thanks fou your reply!

You're gone down the radio buying rabbit hole - speaking from personal experience, there is no escape!
Just bought the XHDATA. Very useful video thanks

Lovely stuff, thanks for commenting!
I like the external MW antenna feature on the pl-330
So do I, a very useful feature.

Put a red filter on the display that will not dazzle you.
That's a great idea, I'll get one out of an old LED clock radio.

Good with hf antennas amplif1transistor
Hi please may I ask is there an easy way to disable the screen light as it hurts my eyes at night when tuning.
no problem with broken antenna foot, due to poor material quality?
